Finally, after Pelosi's visit to Taiwan and the corresponding Chinese reaction, somebody reacted to Chinese propaganda. But it was too little too late.

"Latvia and Estonia withdrew from a cooperation group between China and over a dozen Central and Eastern European countries on Thursday, following in the footsteps of Baltic neighbour Lithuania which withdrew last year. The move comes amid Western criticism towards China over escalating military pressure on democratically ruled Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory, and Beijing's strengthening of ties with Russia during the invasion of Ukraine. Relations between Lithuania and China worsened after the former allowed Taiwan to open a de facto embassy late last year. Latvia's Foreign Ministry said the country's continued participation in the China group was 'no longer in line with our strategic objectives in the current international environment'." https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/latvia-estonia-withdraw-china-cooperation-group-2022-08-11/

The Chinese Communist Party has revealed its nature many times over the years and we should take it very seriously, senator James Paterson tells Q+A after Beijing's actions in the Taiwan Strait this week.

09/08/2022

"Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan last week should not have been exceptional – it merely reaffirmed the right of elected legislators to declare their support for democracy there. I hope that many more defenders of freedom and democracy will soon follow suit...There were those who thought that Ukraine’s legitimate aspirations to be in the EU and Nato could be sacrificed to keep Russia happy after it invaded the country in 2014. It did not lead to peace but encouraged autocratic Russia to launch the biggest war Europe has seen since the Second World War with tremendous amounts of bloodshed, suffering and destruction – and with no end in sight. Appeasement does not lead to peace. It encourages tyrants to think the free world is weak and irresolute, and encourages them to start new wars on an even greater scale. We should have learned this after Munich in 1938, we should have remembered those lessons after the invasion of Georgia in Aug 2008, after the annexation of Crimea in 2014, but somehow we failed to do so. This raises a chilling prospect of the world order where smaller countries and millions of people can be expendable to satisfy authoritarian fantasies of grandeur and domination.

The only way to prevent further wars is not to cede an inch of the territory. Cession of ground – real or metaphorical – leads to certainty of war...China has been conducting a trade war with Lithuania ever since we became the first EU member to open a Taiwanese representative office under the name Taiwan in summer 2021. This was a test for the EU and the West at large. If the global security architecture begins to crumble, if we permit ourselves trade-offs to buy peace, where will it stop?

We need a global order where smaller democracies such as Ukraine, Taiwan or Lithuania, are not expendable. To prevent this we must send a loud and clear signal now: the free world cannot and will not allow Taiwan to become a second Ukraine." https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2022/08/08/free-world-cant-allow-taiwan-become-second-ukraine/

"New Zealand MPs have been warned about using the hugely popular TikTok video app for fear the data could be accessed by the Chinese Government. Late last week, party whips were issued with a reminder from Speaker Trevor Mallard that MPs should not use the app on Parliamentary Service devices. It comes after warnings the platform is harvesting vast amounts of personal data from its users. The directive, issued via Parliamentary Service, cautioned the app 'could pose a security risk where data on your devices could be accessed by ByteDance (the owner of TikTok) and the Chinese Government'." https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/129442434/mps-warned-chinese-government-could-access-tiktok-data

The U.N.-backed Human Rights Committee added its voice to independent advocacy groups that have said the National Security Law was passed by the National People’s Congress in Beijing without adequately consulting the people of Hong Kong...committee vice chair Christopher Arif Bulkan told reporters: 'The committee urged Hong Kong to take action to repeal the national security law and in the interim refrain from applying it'.” https://www.thestar.com/news/world/europe/2022/07/27/un-experts-urge-hong-kong-authorities-to-repeal-security-law.html

"China claims it has developed artificial intelligence technology to read the minds of Communist Party members to test their loyalty. The Smart Political Education Bar uses AI to read facial expressions and brain waves to 'discern the level of acceptance for ideological and political education', according to a video from the Institute of Artificial Intelligence at Hefei Comprehensive National Science Center. Communist Party members can then be assessed in the levels of 'determination to be grateful to the party, listen to the party and follow the party'. The AI programme raises further questions about China’s level of surveillance, which now routinely includes facial recognition technology. It will likely contribute to growing fears the Communist Party is intensifying efforts to control the Chinese population. However, articles and a video linking to the new AI programme were swiftly removed on Sunday shortly after they were published on Chinese social media.

The now-deleted video shows a researcher in a lab coat entering a glass cubicle where he sits down in front of a large screen while his biometrics, including facial recognition, skin galvanic response and electroencephalography response are being monitored. He selects and watches a piece of video content extolling the Chinese Communist Party. The AI then calculates a score for 'learning attentiveness' and 'emotional identification' based on his biometrics. Based on the results, personalised recommendations are made for further education...This new innovation will 'quantify thought education' and create 'new avenues for party building', according to the article." https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2022/07/04/china-uses-mind-reading-ai-test-loyalty-communist-party-members/

"The UK’s last colony was Hong Kong and 25 years ago today that relationship was brought to an end at a poignant ceremony in the rain. But there was never any prospect that independence would follow. Rather, the process was described as a 'handover' to the tender mercies of the Chinese Communist Party. At the time there were hopes that the authorities in Beijing would allow Hong Kong to flourish as a relatively free political entity under the 'one country, two systems' approach. Essentially, there would be free speech and the rule of (British) law, retaining Hong Kong’s economic vibrancy and its global reach to the benefit of China. But this all changed with the elevation of Xi Jinping to the leadership in Beijing. He has dismantled the political and legal architecture designed to make the unlikely relationship work.

Xi has made a rare visit to Hong Kong to mark the 25th anniversary of what has turned out to be the territory’s inexorable assimilation into China. Dissent has been silenced, its champions locked up under draconian national security laws, and newspapers closed down...The West has condemned Beijing, to no avail, while thousands of Hong Kong’s brightest and best have left, many coming to the UK. Arriving yesterday, President Xi said Hong Kong had been 'reborn' since he was last there five years ago. The truth is that its unique status has been crushed." https://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/2022/07/01/hong-kongs-unique-status-has-crushed/

"The United States has accused five Chinese companies of violating sanctions against Russia by continuing to support Russia’s military, and took action this week to block them from buying American technology...The addition of the Chinese companies to the export ban list followed a warning from Gina Raimondo, the secretary of commerce, who said in March that Chinese companies that defied U.S. restrictions against exporting to Russia could essentially be shut down. Companies that produce technology such as microchips that are made with American equipment and software can be crippled if they are added to the U.S. 'entity list'.” https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/29/business/chinese-companies-russia-sanctions.html

"Fifty-one illegal migrants rescued from a plastics factory in Gauteng have been arrested and charged under the Immigration Act. They were arrested during a law enforcement operation led by the department of home affairs at a Chinese-owned factory that allegedly kept employees in slave-like conditions...This led to the arrest of 51 illegal migrants from Malawi, Zimbabwe and China who were allegedly forced to work, eat and sleep inside the factory. 'The 51 were subjected to inhumane and unspeakable working and living conditions in a factory owned by a Chinese national', said the department. Home affairs minister Aaron Motsoaledi condemned the abuse and exploitation of any human being, including illegal migrants. The factory manager was also arrested on Wednesday. 'She, together with the 51, appeared in the Palm Ridge magistrate's court on June 23 and they all have been charged under the Immigration Act'. The owner of the factory was out of the country. Law enforcement officials were also investigating a possible case of human trafficking. Motsoaledi warned businesspeople who subjected employees to such 'atrocious and barbaric' conditions and continued to employ illegal migrants that they would face the full might of the law."

"Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said India will not cede even an inch of its land to China...Singh also said that India will give a befitting reply to anyone threatening its unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity as it no longer remained a 'weak' country...'I do not want to go into what happened during the 1962 Sino-India war. But I want to assure the country as its defence minister that not an inch of land can go to China's occupation when we are there (in the government)', Singh said at an event organised by the Zee News...The defence minister said friction between troops of the two sides takes place largely because of China's perception of the Line of Actual Control (LAC)."

"Helsinki University terminated the contract with its on-campus Confucius Institute...Beijing would have liked to continue funding the programme, according to the university's vice rector, Hanna Snellman. 'They asked if we would consider negotiating a continuation. We said we wouldn't', she explained. The institute's deal with the University of Helsinki lapses next January. Finland is not alone in its decision to leave the Confucius network. In recent years dozens of western universities have shuttered Confucius Institutes on suspicions that they are an arm of the Chinese government's propaganda machinery. Sweden and Denmark have also closed their Confucius Institutes. 'We want to choose our own teachers and employ them ourselves. We also want Chinese language instruction to be research-based', Snellman said...the university had already hired two teachers for the job. 'We want to strengthen Chinese language skills as there's a bigger need than ever before', she explained...Helsinki's Confucius Institute tried to limit public discussion of topics sensitive to China's ruling Communist Party, such as Tibet."

“What is fundamentally broken about the UN is that powerful countries like China were able to shape the rules at the UN for the past few years, and just buy the silence of the vast majority of countries...I’m worried that the entire UN system would totally undermine its own credibility because you’re creating a system that is only applicable for smaller states when it comes to human rights.”

"The European Parliament has adopted a resolution saying China's treatment of mostly Muslim, Turkic-speaking indigenous ethnic groups, such as Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and others in the northwestern region of Xinjiang, amounts to 'crimes against humanity' and holds a 'serious risk of genocide'. The resolution, approved in a vote by the European Parliament on June 9, condemned 'in the strongest possible terms' China’s treatment of Uyghurs and other indigenous peoples in the northwestern region...The resolution says the Uyghur community in China 'has been systematically oppressed by brutal measures, including mass deportation, political indoctrination, family separation, restrictions on religious freedom, cultural destruction and the extensive use of surveillance'. It also says there is 'credible evidence about birth-prevention measures and the separation of Uyghur children from their families amount to crimes against humanity and represent a serious risk of genocide'.

The document calls on the Chinese government to put an 'immediate end' to the practice of arbitrary detention without charge, trial, or conviction for criminal offenses 'targeted' against Uyghurs and other ethnic Turkic peoples, and to close all camps and detention centers and 'immediately and unconditionally' release all of those detained under the practices.

As many as 2 million Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and members of Xinjiang's other indigenous ethnic groups have been taken to detention centers in the western Chinese region...The resolution, which is nonbinding, also criticizes UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet for her recent trip to China, where she visited Xinjiang, saying she 'failed to clearly hold the Chinese government accountable for human rights abuses against the Uyghurs during her visit'. Dozens of rights groups called on June 8 for her resignation, charging that she 'whitewashed Beijing's atrocities' during her trip to China." https://www.rferl.org/a/europe-china-uyghurs-genocide/31891097.html
