THE SCREAM IN BERLIN
On 11 September, the film ‘The Scream’ will be screened in Berlin at the Kino Moviemento cinema.
At this one of the most prestigious and historical cinemas in Berlin, four other works of mine have already been premiered in the past, between 2015 and 2018: ‘Isti'mariyah’, ‘Rhythm of Gezi’, ‘Linea de fuga’ and ‘Reserve Slaves’.
In particular the latter was a short documentary filmed in Sicily interviewing young Africans who had just landed.
That documentary, as well as the others I must say, was much appreciated, although very simple.
But it was filmed before the day in the summer of 2018, 6 years ago, when I began to find ways to get in touch directly via the internet with migrants in Libya.
In essence, that work had the same flaw as all the other works on migration: it only got talking to those who had already arrived.
Since that summer of 2018, my way of seeing the world has changed. It has changed by dint of spending late nights listening to slave boys in Libya beg to go home.
From those sleepless nights, this film was born.
The censorship suffered in Italy is well known, starting from the producer's veto on distribution to the numerous episodes of violence and intimidation.
Now the film will be screened in the heart of Europe, in Berlin, under the eyes of those who for years behind my back accused me without evidence or courts.
I am putting my face on it this time too. If they have something to say about the film, they will not miss this public opportunity.
