🎬 The Reader (2008) is a romantic drama directed by Stephen Daldry, based on Bernhard Schlink’s novel. Set in post-World War II Germany, it follows the complex and morally challenging relationship between a teenage boy, Michael Berg (David Kross), and an older woman, Hanna Schmitz (Kate Winslet).
At 15, Michael falls ill and is helped by Hanna, a tram conductor. After recovering, he seeks her out to thank her, and they begin a passionate affair. Hanna enjoys being read to, and Michael frequently recites literature to her before their encounters. One day, Hanna abruptly disappears, leaving Michael heartbroken.
Years later, as a law student, Michael attends a N**i war crimes trial and is shocked to see Hanna as a defendant. She is accused of allowing Jewish prisoners to die in a burning church while serving as an SS guard. The court views her as the most culpable, but Michael realizes she is hiding a secret—she is illiterate. Rather than admit this, she falsely confesses to writing a report, sealing her fate with a harsh prison sentence.
Over the years, Michael records audiotapes of books and sends them to Hanna in prison. She teaches herself to read and write but, upon her release, finds it hard to reintegrate into society. Before Michael can help her, she takes her own life.
The film explores themes of guilt, shame, and the moral complexities of post-war Germany. Winslet’s performance earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress. Through Michael’s journey, The Reader questions personal responsibility and how the past shapes the future, making it a haunting, thought-provoking film.
