Iceland at the time of Eyjafjallajökull eruption was still struggling with the effects of the economic crisis that hit the country in 2008. In 2008, the island was visited by 502,000 foreign tourists, but since 2010 the number has grown at a surprising pace. One of the important reasons for this change was certainly the weakening of the Ice- landic krone, so Iceland became more affordable for visitors. However, the volcano’s eruption, which was reported all over the world, also contributed to this. We joke today that Eyjafjallajökull was the best Icelandic PR treatment ever.

When Ágnes Viktória Jávorszky and Antonio Mitag came to Iceland five years ago, they started working in tourism. One sleepless night, their interactions with clients sparked the birth of The TourBunny, a hilarious comic about a bunny that works in tourism and has very relatable experiences with customers. We Guide talked to Viktória and Antonio about their time in Iceland, the international success of TourBunny and some of the most memorable customer interactions they have had.

Eruption!
Yesterday, our 3rd issue came out. On the cover, a wonderful comic by The TourBunny about the wait for a volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula.
The days before the issue came out, we joked that the volcano better wait for the cover to go out! Otherwise the joke would be ruined!

Well, it did, but it couldn't hold it in much longer!
See a live we**am from the eruption here:
https://www.livefromiceland.is/we**ams/reykjanes/

(It may lag - all of Iceland is trying to see this.)

The Reykjanes Peninsula is a continuation of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which rises from the sea at the very tip of the peninsula and diagonally crosses Iceland from the south-west to the north-east. You can read the area’s geological history several hundred thousand years back in time, although most...

Are frostbites an inevitable part of winter excursions or skiing? Absolutely not. How to recognize, prevent and treat frostbite, read today in our article.

When the winter hits hard and temperature goes way below freezing point, it’s important - more than ever - to remember about possibilities of frostbites.

On the 23rd of January 1973, exactly 48 years ago, Eldfell on Heimaey island erupted unexpected. The eruption lasted for six months.

Today, we want to remind you an article about monitoring volcanic eruptions and magma movement from the very first issue of WeGuide magazine. Now you will know how it is done :-)

Davið reveals all secrets of northern lights forecasting (and we mean: ALL of them). So if you want to be better prepared for the next spectacle: this is something you should read.

If you work with tourists, one of the most common questions heard from our guests in the wintertime might be: “Is tonight a good night to see the northern lights?”.

Millu Og Krillu Ferðir are old friends that joined the guiding profession together. When they realised all their guiding plans for 2020 had been turned upside down, they put their heads together and created new opportunities by combining new target groups with unused resources. Their story is an inspiring example of innovation from necessity.

"We’ve been friends for 20 years. Early on we started an all-women hiking group with our friends and we would do two trips a year, with me taking a big part in the planning. Those trips were so fun and exciting, we rented buses and trailers, crossed rivers, hiked the highest peaks in Vatnajökull glacier and so on".

The volcanic eruption beneath the Eyjafjallajökull glacier in March 2010 was seen before the precursor activity was noticed. This is an undoubted failure of measurement systems, and although for one such case we have a dozen in which the instruments worked faster, forecasting volcanic eruptions is still a game in which we lose to the unpredictability of the forces of nature.

Look outside :)

[Wikipedia: Polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) are clouds in the winter polar stratosphere at altitudes of 15,000–25,000 m (49,000–82,000 ft). They are best observed during civil twilight, when the Sun is between 1 and 6 degrees below the horizon, as well as in winter and in more northerly latitudes. One main type of PSC is made up mostly of supercooled droplets of water and nitric acid and is implicated in the formation of ozone holes. The other main type consists only of ice crystals which are not harmful. This type of PSC is also referred to as nacreous from nacre, or mother of pearl, due to its iridescence)]

It's here! We are proud and happy to give the first issue of We Guide into your hands.

We Guide is a free, unaffiliated magazine for all tourism professionals in the tourism sector. The only stakeholders are the editorial team, three guides that found themselves out of jobs due to the global pandemic. We want our magazine to be not only a source of information and interesting articles, but also a kind of a hub of communication for everyone related to tourism.

Lastly, we would like to thank those that have showed support and faith, in the preparation for this publication. Without you, we couldn’t have done it.

Davíð, Elín and Kaśka.

We're spreading the news!
We still have ways to go to reach our Karolina Fund goal, but we believe the next days will bring more support.

In the meantime, here is an article about We Guide at mbl.is (in Icelandic).

Nýtt veftímarit, We Guide, kemur úr í fyrsta sinn þann 18. desember næstkomandi. Tímaritið er ætlað öllum þeim sem starfa við ferðaþjónustu á Íslandi. Að blaðinu standa þrír leiðsögumenn sem misstu vinnuna í haust vegna Covid-10.

Join the party and support us on Karolina Fund :-)

Við erum í Kjarnanum í dag!
Taktu þátt í gleðinni og styrktu okkur á Karolina Fund :-)

Þrír leiðsögumenn ákváðu að stofna tímarit sem er sérstaklega ætlað fólki í ferðaþjónustu í stað þess að sitja aðgerðarlaus á meðan að kórónuveirufaraldurinn gengur yfir og ferðamenn geta farið að snúa aftur til landsins.

20/11/2020

In early October, the Icelandic Meteorological Office changed the alert color code for Grímsvötn from green to yellow. This status persists to this day. What does it mean?

Among other things, an increased seismic activity was observed in the last month, as well as geothermal activity, the deformation of the volcano's surface also exceeded the level at which it was before the last eruption of this volcano, i.e. in 2011.

The change of color from green to yellow means that more attention will be focused on this volcano, and additional measuring instruments will probably be installed in its vicinity. However, this does not mean that a volcanic eruption is inevitable. The volcano can return to the state it was before the increased activity without much sensation.

The colors of the codes have been changed several times in recent years for several volcanoes in Iceland. The most recent of these concerned Reykjanes in January 2020, Öræfajökull in 2017, Katla in 2016 and Bárðarbunga in 2014-2015 due to the Holuhraun eruption. In several instances, the alarm color code has been raised to orange and red; the last case was during the most recent eruption at Bárðarbunga. In all other cases, the warnings have been lifted and the color green has been restored.

You wake up at 7.30 AM and it's completely dark outside. You turn on the SAD lamp, make strong coffee and look blankly at the white light of the lamp for a moment. You eat breakfast at night. The second coffee - at 10.00 am - you sip while looking at the moon. At 11.20 AM you are already thinking about lunch and the sun has not yet risen. Something gray appears outside the window around noon, then disappears three or four hours later. At 5:00 PM you feel like it's very late, but you want to go jogging or go to the gym. "What?! In the middle of the night?!" - your body seems to be asking. Welcome to Iceland in winter.

What are your ways of surviving the darkness?

Our readers are first and foremost the people that make the magic happen - the workers out in the field.

We are seeking to raise funds to help cover the cost of launching the first two issues (December 2020 and January 2021). After that, we hope the magazine will be self-sustainable by selling advertisements.

The funds raised will go towards paying content creators (other than editing staff) and launching the website.

Help us make this happen! :)
