Nicky Gumbel is the pioneer of Alpha. He is the author of many best-selling books about the Christian faith, including “Questions of Life”, “The Jesus Lifestyle”, “Why Jesus?”, “A Life Worth Living”, “Searching Issues” and “30 Days”.

This conversation was adapted from Champions Vol. III.

"I wasn’t brought up as a Christian. My father was a secular Jew and agnostic. When I encountered Jesus, I wanted other people to know the difference that Jesus makes in our lives. A relationship with God through Jesus transforms everything – it gives you life in abundance. And when you discover life in all its fullness, it would be the most selfish thing not to tell other people. The most loving thing you can do is tell everyone about this good news.

I tried lots of ways to share the Gospel with others — a lot of trial and error, and perhaps more error than success. Then we found The Alpha Course, a course designed for those in the Church to grow in faith. We redesigned it for people outside the Church, and we have watched people’s lives change."

"There are well over 4,000 ethnic groups who still do not have a witness for Jesus. Most of these countries are closed to missionaries, but welcoming of Christians who work in the marketplace. There are opportunities for teachers, engineers, business people — almost any trade or skill can be used to take Jesus’ message to those who are yet to hear.

The Bible tells us, “whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). Men have created a false, unbiblical separation of what is sacred and secular, and what is worship and outreach. We are not walking in obedience to Scripture whenever we compartmentalize our lives.

I am a businessman, a husband, a father, a grandfather, a coach, a basketball player, a business owner, a teacher and a slave of Jesus. All of these things are me. I cannot segregate these things and view them as separate from me as they all influence and make up who I am. All of me has to fully surrender to Jesus to be His salt and light, to all people wherever He places me. All of me has to recognize that God teaches that our work and worship is one.

Each of us, myself included, should be fully surrendered to Jesus; no wants, no needs, no desires — nothing. Just a desire to live so as to please the Master."

Ken Wytsma is the Lead Pastor of Village Church in Beaverton, Oregon, as well as the Founder of the Justice Conference, which has reached over thirty thousand people.

We talk to him about how there has been a shift in the Church on justice issues.

"I think in the last 10 years, there has been a remarkable shift. Churches in America are stepping away from just sending missionaries for short-term missions and are now wrestling with what it means for their respective communities. Social media increased globalization.

This generation grew up hungrier for justice — demanding that of their churches. We have also seen a lot of movements, big organizations like International Justice Mission, World Vision, celebrities like Bono and the One Campaign. We had a lot of things happening at the same time. That shifted the moral vocabulary of the Church to not just think of righteousness as purity, but to think of righteousness as my relationships with others. That is — people who may not be like me or live in my country or tread in the same economic stream."

Pete Greig is a pastor, best-selling author and the bewildered instigator of the 24-7 Prayer movement, which has reached more than half the nations on earth.

We had a chance to talk to him about the lifestyle of prayer, both its victories and disappointments.

"I still believe in miracles, and we continue to see many, but I believe that we must also be honest about ‘unmiracles’ — and the pain of life. I find that the Bible is way more honest about unanswered prayer than the Church. God isn’t insecure. We can wrestle and question in prayer.

In response to this story, the thing I hear most is, “Thank you for being honest. Thank you for being real.” We are all sick and tired of hype, of performance, of leaders pretending to have a perfect life. In prayer we have access to unlimited power, but we also encounter the Father’s heart."

This week we are featuring our interview with Sam Chand, a leadership architect and consultant, author, change strategist and speaker. He serves as President Emeritus of Beulah Heights University.

"Being a leader means serving others, lifting others, and believing in others. The operative word is others. Leadership equals responsibility.

A leader takes on the stewardship for a number of things. Some of them include: human, financial, spiritual, and natural resources. It involves being a role model and being under the scrutiny of various constituencies.

Being a leader is not being a ‘Lone Ranger’ and calling all the shots, although leaders certainly do make decisions. It is about calling the shots, while knowing what is at stake on all levels and for all people you influence."

Rabbi Jason Sobel is the founder of Fusion, and works to reconnect Jewish and Christian followers through relevant and inspired teaching. We had the privilege of having a conversation with him, where he shared his thoughts on Kingdom convergence and other key issues.

"Kingdom convergence means unity among Jews and Gentiles. Historically, there’s been a conflict between Jews and Christians — the enemy’s attempt to keep the Kingdom from advancing. From the beginning of time, God always intended for Jews and Gentiles to be one. When we live united under Him, we are an unstoppable force.

Practically, this convergence is two-fold. We want to connect Christians to their Jewish roots and Jews deeper to the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament and the Messiah.

I believe we are in a John 21 moment: the greatest catch in the history of the world is coming. The disciples were fishing all night and caught nothing. They cast their net one more time, on the right side of the boat, and got a great catch.

God is moving to converge and connect Jews and Gentiles. May you experience this powerful convergence. Your full inheritance is waiting."

"My parting words would be that God is on the throne, as He always has been. And He always will be. As His people, we have the invitation, both in seasons of plenty and seasons of challenge, to fix our eyes on him and recognize that He has the solutions in the good and the bad. Let’s have a real sense of faith and courage and not be discouraged in this season.

"I think failure is something we live and breathe every day.

If we talk about social innovation, it is really about things that have never really been done before. It’s akin to navigating and drawing a map in a dark room.

So what do you do when you’re blind in a dark room? You walk in one direction, hit a wall, and then take reference from that wall and adjust.

Failure is like that. Sometimes we see failure as the end of the road and think we have not made a difference. But from an engineering standpoint, failure gives us information to navigate a situation better."

Kenneth Heng is the Director and Founder of Solve n+1, a social agency that facilitates projects for social good. We had the opportunity to speak to him, and part one is now online.

"I stumbled into the work at Solve n+1. I was never qualified to begin with. I’ve always been interested in developing communities. For almost a decade, I would regularly visit various developing nations. I love different cultures and communities and I would spend time with the locals, drinking tea together while having conversations.

Solve n+1 started because many of them became my friends and I wanted to help. When a friend is in trouble, you want to do whatever it takes to help them.

In many of these communities, I would meet with dreamers who had great visions. They would tell me about the people they serve, and the ideas they had for wanting to give these people a better life, education, and purpose. Yet often these dreamers would feel a bit stuck. They would face issues with navigating different stakeholders, designing systems or processes and even ensuring financial sustainability."

"The third thing I would do is remind them of the importance of prayer. I think we’ve lost the urgency for prayer in this generation. We are surrounded by so much information, that I think we’ve lost something of the wonder in the mystery of God.

The beauty of our faith is the wonder and the mystery of God. It’s looking at His power, which we cannot quantify. We can’t google it. The only way we access it is through prayer.

More than ever, prayer is an act of humility. When we pray, we’re basically saying that we don’t have the answers. We don’t know it all. We need someone other than ourselves.

Our generation is very self-sufficient. Prayer is the counterculture to independence, prayer is the way of saying, 'Actually, I need to be on my knees. I need God.'

I think we need a bit of a revival in prayer if we’re going to be justice-seekers. The role of prayer and justice is something that is not talked about a lot. But I think it is incredibly important."

"The Exodus narrative is what inspired so much of our justice thinking about God. He is a God who sees the vulnerable and the poor. The ones that are enslaved. He has compassion on them, and comes down and speaks out against injustice. He settled His people in a new land. A new place where they could truly flourish as a community.

God sees the injustice of children without families. He wants to come down in his compassion. He wants to move the hearts of Christian families to open their homes. Then these children can escape the oppressive environment of not having a family. They can be brought into a new family where they are cared for and can flourish."

Andrew Gardener is the Senior Pastor of The Vine Church in Hong Kong. He co-founded of The Justice Conference Asia in 2013.

“Salvation is never just personal. It’s never just solely individual. It’s always taught in Scripture in a communal way. You are individually saved, but it’s done within a framework of community. So the gospel is much broader than just my own ticket to heaven. It is also about the restoration of all of the broken things in the world.

Not only am I broken, the very fabric of creation has also been marred by the reality of sin and justice. Thus, the message of the Gospel is not just about going to heaven when I die but it’s about seeking the “shalom”, or peace, of God’s creation in the here and now. In the end, God doesn’t make all new things. Rather, He makes all things new (Revelation 21-22)! All the things that are currently created are going to be renewed and restored. That’s the work of the Gospel.

The restoration of all things sits in the very heart of what Jesus came to do, at the very heart of His message. We had a gap in our theology regarding the purpose of the Gospel.

All of that is to say that the impetus that birthed the Justice Conference was theology. We wanted to bring the heart of justice back into the language and the culture of the local church. That was really the starting point of what the Justice Conference is all about.”

Marlo Phillip is the Lead Pastor of WelcomeHome church, a thriving church plant in New Delhi, India.

In today's article, he shares with us how God changed his heart to give him a special love for his city!

"Again, I started off not liking the city so much. I felt it was hard, dry, and not my type in some sense. I felt like this old city had no life. Then God changed the language of my heart about 5 years later; I started to fall in love with the city not because of the circumstances but because of the people.

We started to invite some youth to our house for coffee nights. This experience really connected us to the city. In 2010, New Delhi hosted the Commonwealth Games, and the city was developing. Malls were popping up and I saw young people hanging out there. We would go and sit in the mall, in Starbucks and coffee shops, and would see hundreds of young people walking past.

God started to give us a burden for the people. We started to sense it. It took me many years to accept that this is really the city that God has called me to, but now I tell people I’m from Delhi! I love New Delhi!"

The ChurchNext series is a collection of conversations with pastors and prophets from around the world, discussing the shifts and changes that are taking place in the Church around the world.

In this installment, we discuss the need for real, personal community in a world that is shifting ever more online.

"We need to go back to the Bible, and ask what it means to be a disciple of Christ. We need to examine how discipleship takes place effectively, and what it means to be part of a local church.

Jesus’s model of discipleship is relational discipleship. This can only happen when we are living in community with one another and when the local church becomes a biblically functioning community.

A certain level of relationship building can be done online but there must be sufficient in-person interactions for a deeper level of community and mutual accountability to take place."

𝘛𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘶𝘴 𝘢 𝘣𝘪𝘵 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧.

As the mother of a foster and adoptive family, my husband and I currently have three boys. A 12-year-old biological son, an 8-year-old adopted son, and an almost 2-year-old foster son.

We started homeschooling when our first son was 5 years old. Since then, I’ve become a staunch believer, advocate and coach for the educational philosophy of Charlotte Mason, a British educator-reformer in the 1800s. As an avid reader, I have a burden to raise up a generation of Filipinos that loves reading and learning, and who, by learning a wide variety of subjects, such as world history, literature, science, poetry, art, and music, can lead and impact our city and nation.

𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘦.𝘪𝘴?

From a young age, I’ve always loved stories. This includes hearing them from other people and reading them. Ever since I became a Christian, I’ve loved hearing about God’s work in other people’s hearts and how He transforms us. So when Daniel asked me to be a writer on Brave, a platform that highlights risk-taking adventures with God, it was the most natural thing in the world to say yes!

𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘷𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘰?

I think the bravest thing I’ve done so far, with my family, was saying yes to fostering. When the Lord spoke to us about adoption, we believed in the value of a permanent home for a child. I didn’t particularly want to foster, but that was the route that our social welfare recommended when we started off. We were eventually able to adopt the first baby boy we fostered. While we were processing his adoption, we were allowed to foster again, but not yet adopt. The second baby boy we fostered was matched with an international adoptive family. Having come to us at 3 weeks old, he left when he was a little over 2 years old, and it was the most heart wrenching time for our family’s life.

Another area of fostering that comes to mind was when we took in two siblings. Up to that point in our fostering and adoption journey, we had already taken in 2 babies. But as we contemplated the orphan crisis, knowing that babies and toddlers usually have a better chance of getting adopted, the Lord gave us a burden for the plight of older children in institutions. We fostered a 7 and 11 year old with the hope of adopting them, and they stayed with us over the course of eight months before they got moved to different families. It was a challenging but very growing experience for all of us.

𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘳𝘦 3 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶?

1) I’ve been writing songs since high school. It’s been one of my primary ways of processing emotions, thoughts, and struggles, along with other kinds of writing, such as journalling and writing poems and stories.

2) One of the transformative seasons in my life as a Christian came through an online Bible study, on a website that had a set of lessons you go through per day, and the opportunity to converse over email with a “mentor/accountability partner” I never met in real life.

3) I’ve always wanted to publish a novel, from way back when I was in second grade. Since then I have self-published three devotional books and two novellas, with a few more novels in the making. So, watch out!

The second part of our conversation with Benny Ho is now available online. Crises give us clarity to see the existing fault lines in our relationships, providing us an opportunity to address these weaknesses and see healing!

"One thing that is very important is this – crisis reveals fault lines in our lives and relationships.

Prior to COVID-19, people could always give excuses for not having time to do this or that. For example, we could say, “I’d like to have a personal walk with God, but I travel a lot. Or my work keeps me so busy and holds me to late hours.” So that is why I can’t have a personal walk with God, or that is why I don’t have time for my family.

But we now actually do have time to spend with God and with our family. So the question is – are we doing it?"

"So in the midst of the unexpected crisis, we discovered that those things that we always consider to be so important, like conferences and events, are not really that important in the bigger scheme of things. Yet without our relationships, our connect and cell groups, we’ll be in trouble.

This crisis helps us to be clear about what’s important and what is not. That’s true not just in church, but also at home, in our workplaces, in our family life, and in our personal life. We are beginning to realize what things are truly important."

This week on Brave we feature a conversation with Bobby Gruenewald, creator of the YouVersion Bible app. He shares the story of how the idea for YouVersion came about, and gives encouragement for all entrepreneurs and creatives!

"I was standing in a large security queue at the Chicago airport on October 26, 2006. Instead of being frustrated waiting, I wondered if there was a way we could use technology to help people read the Bible consistently. People come up with all sorts of reasons why they can’t read the Bible often. I wondered how we could use technology to help.

We were in the days of Web 2.0, where people changed from being consumers to contributors. It was the early days of blogging, podcasting, and YouTube. The original idea was to build a website where people could take any passage of Scripture and associate videos, pictures, or blog posts to it. I’m an activator, so I tried to come up with a name for it while I waited in the queue. YouVersion was the best name I came up with, and I registered the domain name before I got on the plane."

Our world has changed. The Church Next series is a collection of conversations with pastors and prophets from around the world to canvass thoughts surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and realize the effects and the opportunities it presents the Church.

In this second article of the series, we grapple with the changes that events in the year 2020 has brought, and how the Church continues to remain relevant.

"I believe that there are some things that are not downloadable online. I can think of a few off the top of my head like worship dynamics, corporate anointing, personal ministry, Holy Spirit encounters, service opportunities, human touch, intimate fellowship, real-time discipleship and united purpose. In that sense, there will always be a place for the onsite church that is not downloadable through the online church.

Some things that will change will be a greater shift from onsite training and equipping. Most of our people have learned how to go online to access content, and most churches have learned to go online, so training and equipping that is not so fellowship-based will stay online even after Covid-19 is over.

This is one good shift that has allowed more people to access good biblical training content via online platforms."

"I think it’s okay for mothers to just let go of ministry and focus on ministering to their family. It’s something I’m trying to learn as well, that we also can do our “ministry” at home. What we do has a lot of eternal impact on our own children, and we are being just as fruitful, if not even more fruitful, at home as we would be if we were busy in the church.

There’s only a short period when I can influence my children greatly. It’s a precious opportunity to learn to be faithful in small things, and let God do a heart work in me, purging out impurities in my faith.

I can allow this time of hiddenness to be a humbling place that prepares myself for whatever God has in store for me in future. We have to accept that this is a season that God wants us to go through, and trust that He will make us fruitful in this time, while preparing us for our next season."

"I remember this one time when Daniel couldn’t sleep. For three hours, he was just crying and crying. We were so frustrated and were tempted to just make threats like, “Stop this behavior right now. All these toys are going to be taken away from you if you don’t stop.” But we knew these things wouldn’t help – he still wouldn’t sleep.

After three hours I had this thought, “Is he feeling scared?” And the Holy Spirit gave me this memory of earlier in the day when he was watching a Disney cartoon and a bad guy came on the screen. He came up to me and said, “Oh Daddy, Daddy, look at that guy!” The Holy Spirit gave me this flashback. So I asked Daniel, “Hey, Daniel, are you not sleeping because you’re scared of the bad guy that you saw?” He replied, “Yes.” And then I said, “Would you like to invite Jesus to come and be with you so you won’t be scared?” We did that, and Jesus blessed his spirit and gave him peace. Conversations with Champions

Stories and insights shape our environment. Brave is a collection of conversations with significant Kingdom Champions - we go behind-the-scenes to learn these champions’ back stories and discover the keys that have motivated, guided, and led them to Kingdom success.

We believe that each of us is called to “fullness of life”. We were not born just to survive but live a life of significance. Brave seeks to celebrate how dreams have been fulfilled and destinies realized in some of the most influential game changers in the world.
