10/12/2022

In honor of Animal Rights Day, we are sparing a thought for creatures who are often victimized because of the activities of the human race. TUTI Books' forthcoming title "Bahram and the Tale of Seven Domes" serves this purpose beautifully.

This book is inspired by a fable called "The Seven Portraits" (by Nizami Ganjavi, the Iranian poet and storyteller), in which "Bahram the Onager" -a king who is partial to hunting onagers- followed by a dream coming true, marries seven princesses of seven lands and erects each of them a palace with a dome of a different color.
Each night, one of the brides treats him with a cautionary tale. After these seven nights, Bahram disappears in search of an onager to hunt.

"Bahram and the Tale of Seven Domes", the winner of the 56th Illustrators Exhibition of Bologna, is the story of Bahram's return after ages. It is a delicate medley of literary legacy and environmental issues in which each bride confides an endangered animal to King Bahram to protect them.

December 3, the International Day of People with Disability, reminds and gives us all an opportunity to work for the specially abled people in whatever way possible. Hence, we are highlighting one of TUTI Books' most popular titles in this regard, "The World is Mine".

"My dad an I head out of the house and take the world's strangest trip; one that has a car, a bicycle, a horse, camels, and boats and takes us to the end of the world.
This is not an ordinary trip. While on it, we get disappointed, fail, and change our route, but we learn that explorers never lose hope. We have hope, my dad and I. Because we’ll reach our dreams by getting to the furthest place in the world."

Selected for both the Biennial of Illustration Bratislava and the Tallinn Design Festival Triennial, the book helps children - especially those with disabilities - to understand they can move beyond any limitation by means of imagination. It manifests how the blend of hope and imagination drives life forward, regardless of the cards one has been dealt.

Today, we are right in the middle of Children's Grief Awareness Week (17th – 23rd November 2022). Here is one of TUTI Books' related YAs novels, as a bookish dressing for children's loss and grief.

"My Mother Jackdaw" is the story of Shabahang, a girl whose life drastically changes after her mother's su***de. Throughout the story, Shabahang tries to find the reasons behind her mother's decision and cope with her loss. A jackdaw builds a nest on their terrace, which Shabahang associates with her mother's presence.

Some quotations from the book:

"I wish I could go back and ask mommy whether she was happy or not. Of course she wasn't, 'cause she isn't here with us anymore. When I think of mommy, grief swallows me whole."

"Nothing is heartbreaking in this world, but it's the memory of it that is heartbreaking."

"I have reviewed that day and the days before a thousand times to know why did mom decide so. I imagine that day. The steps mom took... Didn't she even doubt for a moment? Didn't her foot tremble? I mean, she did this without even taking a look at me, the sky, the white poplar in the park opposite the house? It's unbelievable but there is no clue or reason for what she did. In such times, there should be someone, knowing that a household is sad or is taking a decision that others are unaware of. Undoubtedly, daddy and I were not aware of mom and now... the sound of her fall keeps playing in my ear; like the repeated sound of a door being shot at times when dad is mad."

"- I don't want to hear anything.
I block my ears with my hands and run to my room. I lock the door behind. I sit behind the door and push my head through the loose collar of my shirt. I wish dad knew how badly I miss mommy. I'm bursting into tears and I can't stop it. I can't swallow my sob. I can't keep blinking to stop my tears from dropping. Because I'm a desparate girl who is stranded and I feel like no body loves me in this world."

19/11/2022

The illustrations of "The Roc Girl (Da'al's Daughter)" and "Junk Food Jane" made it to the BIBF Ananas International Illustration Exhibition 2022 finalists list.

"The Roc Girl" had previously won both the 56th illustrators exhibition of Bologna and the Sharjah Book Authority Illustration Exhibition.
The story is about a couple yearning for a child, then a hakim gives a bird egg to them to look after it for forty days. Not believing in the hakim, the husband throws the egg out. The roc bird takes the egg away. A beautiful girl hatches out whom the roc fosters. The prince sees the roc girl and wants to marry her. Desperate to catch her, a witch comes to help who turns out to be planning to make her daughter marry the prince instead. The roc girl becomes stranded and helpless in the fields. How can the prince hear her shouting for help through the melody of a shepherd’s reed?
The Roc Girl is a story of magic, nature, and wisdom. It amusingly manifests the failure of malignant behavior as the truth will out in the end.

Junk Food Jane is the story of Jane, a little girl who really loves junk food.
She mixes and matches different junk food,
creates new made-up foods and names them!
She also always swallows gum once she’s done chewing it. This goes on until one day she finds an invitation card to a junk food contest...
“Junk Food Jane” is a story focusing on children’s bad dietary habits. Through a fun narrative and colorful illustrations and by the end of the story,
children make up their own mind about the things they choose to eat and how they would affect their health.

Congratulations to Noushin Sadeghian and Maryam Tahmasebi !

“A Magical Sleep” by Mahsa Hedayati has been selected for The White Ravens list 2022.

The “White Ravens” catalogue, is the most important annual publication of the International Youth Library. This year, the “White Ravens” contains a selection of 200 notable children’s and young adult books from 53 countries published in 37 languages.

Like any other human activity, sleeping may involve different customs in different cultures. Thus, it might be interesting for children living in Western and Northern countries to learn about the Middle to the Fareast where people traditionally used to sleep on mattresses on the floor. Although in Iran this tradition has gradually faded, one still can find people keeping their mattresses, pillows, and sheets packed in a corner during the day.

Illustrator Mahsa Hedayati has made this memorable custom the basis of her wordless book in which children play with bedding material during the day. This turns into a fantastic game full of joy, imagination, color, and adventure – a magical world in which everything is possible: One moment, the children find themselves in a beautiful garden, the next moment they dive into a leaf full of water, so that forest animals have to come to their aid, until, in the end, they fall asleep again. These illustrations are interesting to children all over the world and can lead to both, developing their imagination and their familiarization with Persian culture and traditions.

Previously, these titles from TUTI Books had been selected for The White Ravens list: “Cricket, Why Do You Sing?”, “The Boxer”, “Ace”, “What a Brilliant Idea”, and “The Orange Girl”.
