Alila Yangshuo is located in a col near Li River in Yangshuo, Guangxi. Surrounded by picturesque natural landscape, the site locates in one of the most typical karst regions. An old sugar mill built in 1960s is beautifully preserved, with an industrial truss used for sugar cane transport.

While Beijing has been experiencing the massive growth in economy and city development, many have pointed out the issue of drop in living environment. Captain’s House locates on the southeast end of Huangqi Peninsula, Fujian Province. The damp and erosive nature of seaside caused the unsafety of the existing structure and large area water leakage during over 20 years of use, which, of course, become the main design issues to be addressed.

The site is flat and vast, with the endless ocean view at one side. The “height” and “distance”, consequently, becomes the key factors through the concept generating process. We set up an observatory platform on the roof of the building, where people could enjoy the maximum view of the landscape.

The building extends the greenery of an adjacent park through a common vertical garden that emerges from a delicate set of Peruvian dark marble screens. The orientation-specific facades go from mostly opaque in the street side to mostly open facing the park. The rational plan fit 15 apartments of different sizes ranging from one to six bedrooms.

The project explores the possibility of anti-monumentality for a contemporary palace. These themes(the precinct, intimacy and the promenade architecturale) when combined, will result in a small house whose real dimensions will only be revealed by moving through a route across a polycentric space in time.
