Catch a glimpse of the author meet and greet with Nidhi Ashok Goyal, executive director and founder of Rising Flame, talking about her book "And They Lived Ever After" that happened at the Kunzum Books, Jorbagh.
About the book - Meet a deaf Snow White, a wheelchair-using Rapunzel, a neurodivergent Ugly Duckling.
In a world where fairy tales usually demonize characters who live with disability, these and other fairy-tale characters challenge our understanding of the people around us. The authors of this collection seek to retell classic stories by weaving in their own everyday experiences-the struggles, joys and frustrations that may not be known to the non-disabled.
"And They Lived ... Ever After" grew out of a programme organized by Rising Flame, an award-winning non-profit that seeks to build an inclusive world in which diverse bodies, minds and voices thrive with dignity and live free of discrimination, abuse and violence. This book is every bit as enchanting as it is important.

“Reading is one of the best things in the world to do because it helps you experience things you haven't experienced, and helps you go to places you haven't been to. Opens up completely new worlds - not just of words, but worlds in general. It makes you empathetic, it gives you a picture of other people's lives, and opens up your imagination like nothing else. I think it's always done that for me, which is why it became a hobby and then it became a profession,” says Poulomi Chatterjee publisher at HarperCollins India.

“It's important to tell stories and many stories. It’s important that all of us are able to hear each other's stories. It breaks the world of hegemony. One story, one sort of dominance; many stories disrupt that dominance. It's also important that we are able to read stories, able to read in different languages and translations by different authors.
It gives us a worldview that is very different when one particular author, or one particular country, dominates. Hollywood, for example, is a kind of dominance, right? But when you have stories from all over - south Indian cinema, Bangladeshi cinema, and Sri Lankan cinema, you have a different view of the world. I feel that it's important, therefore, to keep reading, to keep viewing, to keep listening.
And at the end of it, reading is fun, it's entertaining. We should read more, we should write more, we should think more,” says Somnath Batabyal, author of Red River.
“Bookstores do more than simply sell; they enable discovery. You can go and buy the author or the book of your choice online, but it does not enable discovery. Some of the finest reads are the ones that you've been able to pick up when you are in that leisurely moment, just browsing through a brick and mortar bookstore. And that doesn't unfortunately happen online. There was a time when we were predicting the death of bookstores. What I am really happy to see is that independents have really started shining, and that's really what we want,” remarks author Ashwin Sanghi.

“It's an escapist experience because you just want to be away from all the noise. The calm and the smell of a book, being lost within different kind of stories - it's one of the best experiences to be in a bookstore. There is now a Kunzum near my home, so I am going to be spending a lot of time over here just browsing and reliving all my memories as a child,” says Vyoma Trivedi, publicist at Juggernaut.

“One of the things I love about bookstores is that when you step into one, you don't know what you're going to stumble upon. I go back to a quote from Tom Hanks, that life was like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get. It is the same for bookstores. You never know which book you may end up with, and how it could change your day, your weekend, or your life.
When I compare this with an online shopping experience, I can only go looking for something I already know which is quite different from being surprised in a bookstore. There is a vibe to a bookstore, there is the aroma, which can be quite intoxicating. I smell books which is the first step to falling in love with them,” says Arcopol Chaudhuri, Executive Editor - Rights & New Media, HarperCollins India.
