There was a demon called Tarakasur who was performing severe penance to ask a boon from lord Shiva.
After seeing his immense devotion, Shiva blessed him with a boon of immortality, by informing him that he could only be killed by Shiva’s own son.
As Shiva was parama vairagya, by knowing this Tarakasur continued troubling innocents & saints for several years Without having any fear.
Later on Kartikeya the son of Shiva and Parvati, killed Tarakasur.
But at the time of death, Tarakasur realised his mistakes & prayed to Lord Shiva for forgiveness.
Lord Shiva forgave him & gave him blessing that Tarakasur's name will be attached with Shiva’s name & will be worshipped in kaliyuga as ‘Tarkeshwar Mahadev’ to the temple where Tarakasur meditated once.
