Theme: Concrete, without its ability to be durable, has less meaning and utility in the infrastructure sector. Durability is defined as the capability of concrete to resist weathering action, chemical attack and abrasion while maintaining its desired engineering properties. It normally refers to the duration or life span of trouble-free performance. Different concretes require different degrees of durability depending on the exposure environment and properties desired. For example, concrete exposed to tidal seawater will have different requirements than indoor concrete.

Concrete will remain durable if:

· The cement paste structure is dense and of low permeability.

· Under extreme condition, it has entrained air to resist freeze-thaw cycle.

· It is made with graded aggregate that are strong and inert.

· The ingredients in the mix contain minimum impurities such as alkalis, Chlorides, sulphates and silt.



A durable material helps the environment by conserving resources and reducing wastes and the environmental impacts of repair and replacement. The production of replacement building materials depletes natural resources and can produce air and water pollution.

Concrete resists weathering action, chemical attack, and abrasion while maintaining its desired engineering properties. Different concretes require different degrees of durability depending on the exposure environment and the properties desired. Concrete ingredients, their proportioning, interactions between them, placing and curing practices, and the service environment determine the ultimate durability and life of the concrete.

The design service life of most buildings is often 30 years, although buildings often last 50 to 100 years or longer. Because of their durability, most concrete and masonry buildings are demolished due to functional obsolescence rather than deterioration. However, a concrete shell or structure can be repurposed if a building use or function changes or when a building interior is renovated. Concrete, as a structural material and as the building exterior skin, has the ability to withstand nature’s normal deteriorating mechanisms as well as natural disasters.

The second most used commodity in the world after water has a sprawling history in the evolution of mankind’s engineering and building prowess. It is long-lasting and dependable, affordable and adaptable to many designs. Plus, concrete’s thermal stability can also create more energy-efficient buildings. Unfortunately, a stumbling block has led concrete into a mire of doubts – it upholding the runner up position for maximum CO2 emissions, surpassed by cement!

An uncontested fact remains that an ever-evolving world needs constantly developing infrastructure and construction know hows and an array of concrete typology has been a fruitful and durable companion of the construction industry. Though, concrete undoubtedly continues to be the popular choice of material in the design and construction industry, it will rather be batting a blind eye if we do not cater to the growing need to suppress and take decisive actions for the environmental consequences it is causing. Resultant – concrete is under constant speculations and firmly in the spotlight of innovation and experimentation. Experts across the globe ranging from global giants to engineering researchers are pouring in multiple visions and possibilities to the humble, yet not so humble -concrete and its sustainable usability in the industry.

Portland cement is a key component of almost all modern concrete, accounting for more than 95% of the cement market. Concrete is typically made up of 41% crushed rock, 26% sand, 16% water, 11% portland cement and 6% entrained air. But despite being made from natural materials, concrete carries a heavy carbon footprint.

Attention is often focused on intensive animal agriculture, fossil fuels and plastic production as huge problems (as it should be), but as we move forward and attempt to decarbonise as rapidly as possible over the next decade, we have to make sure we’re looking at every area of society. That has to include construction and development and, therefore, concrete.

All this boils down to a trail of questions:
1. Concrete is time sustainable but can it be environment sustainable too?
2. How can bio-based materials and elements be integrated into concrete mixtures to have more climate conscious approach?
3. What is the future of Concrete, can it become a game changer with its current attributes tweaked to fit more in the global environmental developmental goals?
