Temperatures in Delhi have hit a record high of 50.5C (122.9F), as authorities warned of water shortages in India’s capital.

India is no stranger to searing summer temperatures. Years of scientific research have found the climate crisis is causing heatwaves to become longer, more frequent and more intense 🥵

City authorities warned of the risk of water shortages as the capital swelters. The water minister, Atishi Marlena, called for “collective responsibility” in stopping wasteful water use, the Times of India newspaper reported on Wednesday.

At the same time, West Bengal and the north-eastern state of Mizoram have been struck by gales and lashing rains from Cyclone Remal, which hit India and Bangladesh on Sunday, killing more than 38 people.

So you’re building a more sustainable wardrobe. In considering fabrics, you’ve found that many clothes are made from polyester. It’s the most used fibre globally, known for durability, crease-resistance, and quick-drying properties. But is this a more sustainable material? 🪡🧵🤔

❌ NOPE. Polyethylene terephthalate AKA—“Polyester”—is made by polymerising ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid.

👀 Simply speaking: it’s plastic—and is the third most-used plastic. Polyester is not biodegradable, polyester manufacturing is highly energy and water intensive, and the disperse dyeing processes required to colour the material can result in water pollution, making it toxic to humans and animals. And, while recycled polyester is a growing market, this is neither a clearcut nor wholly more sustainable solution.

💭 But what about recycled polyester? What about microfibres? What about alternative materials?

It’s important to recognize the multifaceted benefits of ma*****na to our planet. Beyond its recreational and medicinal uses, cannabis cultivation can be environmentally friendly. Unlike many crops, ma*****na requires minimal pesticides and fertilizers, reducing harmful runoff into water systems. Additionally, h**p, a variety of cannabis, is a versatile plant that can be used for eco-friendly alternatives to plastic, paper, and even building materials. Moreover, the cultivation of h**p sequesters carbon dioxide, aiding in the fight against climate change. As we strive for a more sustainable future, cannabis emerges as a promising ally in preserving our planet.

Cockrates. By 🍄

We think we’ve been here all along, that the world is made for us…

The answer to everything is 42 but do we know the question ⁉️

That’s why (some) religious belief, if used to think that we are special and that this is all for us, only endorses more of the self righteousness-prone behavior of exploiting resources for our good, violating natural laws and the balance of ecosystems (which nobody talks about but is essential to any life form on earth), and separating us more and more from the reality we live in 👀

Not trying to stir more climate anxiety but just a gentle reminder 💚

We should all read Douglas Adams book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy 🙌👽✨

Living in the hills is not as same as living in a city. Real effects of climate change, ecological disasters and erratic development can be seen in these econsensitive areas and if people from these areas are protesting then it must mean something. The least we could do is listen and support them. 🤔

What are the rituals that define us?

Born and raised in a working class family in India, photographer is a young woman trying to define herself within the complexities of small town life. In her series, “Joy of Small Things,” inspired by Arundhati Roy’s “The God of Small Things”—a novel that explores how small, seemingly insignificant things shape people’s behavior and lives, Kunnath documents life in Calicut, southern India, and examines the transformative power of faith.

“The unwavering faith people bestow upon the divine is an indescribable phenomenon,” says Kunnath. ”I am captivated by the transformative power of such rituals: People tying bangles onto trees in the hope of a prosperous marriage; their faces lighting up as a parrot reveals their fortunes…Here, I become an integral part of the space, the community, and a participant in the collective beliefs that bind us all together.”

While Modi might have brought a lot of eyeballs to Lakshadweep Islands, we want to draw inspiration from to develop the islands responsibly 🏝️✨💚

In 1988, CGH Earth (formerly known as Casino Hotel) was offered the contract to reconstruct and run the resort on Bangaram Island in the Lakshadweep Islands, they were a single hotel enterprise based in Kochi with limited resources. The contract also stipulated regulations to conserve the fragile ecology of the coral atolls and protect the interests of the island’s inhabitants. Then there was the issue of remote access (that continues to this day).

The approach they took was to ‘do just enough’, with the belief that true luxury was more than the conventional meaning of `opulence of built space’. The lessons in preservation they learnt were not only the foundation of their growth but also instrumental in the decision to change our company’s name from Casino Group of Hotels to CGH Earth, to better represent the non-negotiable core values – respect for the environment, community, and the local ethos 💚

Greenlane is currently helping CGH Earth quantify and track its impact on people and the planet based on these 3 core values ✨

Our planet now faces a global extinction crisis never witnessed by humankind. Scientists predict that more than 1 million species are on track for extinction in the coming decades.

Each time a species goes extinct, the world around us unravels a bit. The consequences are profound, not just in those places and for those species but for all of us. These are tangible consequential losses, such as crop pollination and water purification, but also spiritual and cultural ones.

This holiday season, let's remember the
workers that make everything so easy in India 👀

Fairwork India published a report for labour platforms in India in 2023

Link to report :https://fair.work/wp-content/uploads/sites/17/2023/11/Fairwork-India-Report-2023.pdf

These are the 5 criteria they used to measure worker rights 👀

1. Fair Pay
Workers, irrespective of their employment classification, should earn a decent income in their home jurisdiction after taking account of work-related costs.

2. Fair Conditions
Platforms should have policies in place to protect workers from foundational risks arising from the processes of work and should take proactive measures to protect and promote the health and safety of workers.

3. Fair Contracts
Terms and conditions should be accessible, readable and comprehensible. The party contracting with the worker must be subject to local law and must be identified in the contract.

4. Fair Management
There should be a documented process through which workers can be heard, can appeal decisions affecting them, and be informed of the reasons behind those decisions.

5. Fair Representation
Platforms should provide a documented process through which worker voice can be expressed. Irrespective of their employment classification, workers should have the right to organise in collective bodies, and platforms should be prepared to cooperate and negotiate with them.

The first-ever global stocktake is set to conclude at the COP28 climate summit. In the first week of COP28, the draft text for Global Stocktake was formed that called for the phasing out of all fossil fuels.

The stocktake can help policymakers and stakeholders strengthen their climate policies and commitments in their next round of Nationally Determined Contributions, or ‘NDCs’, paving the way for accelerated action. NDCs are "ambitious national climate action plans that every country needs to develop and update on a regular basis", the UN Climate Change explains.

We hope to see "Phase Out of fossil fuels" in the language to send a strong message to all governments to take action now.

BluSmart received carbon credit accreditation from Verra, a global non-profit corporation, making it as the first mobility company in India to obtain carbon credits for the CO2 emission reductions achieved by its EV fleet from February 2020 to December 2021.

BluSmart's primary objective is to promote large-scale decarbonization in the mobility sector, and it has already completed more than 300 million kilometers using all-electric vehicles, serving over 9.5 million fully electric trips.

Anmol Singh Jaggi, CEO and Co-founder of BluSmart, expressed his thoughts on this accomplishment, stating, "As the first mobility company in India to attain carbon credit accreditation, BluSmart reaffirms its commitment to the mission of large-scale decarbonization in the mobility sector. We will persist in our efforts to build a business that benefits both people and the planet."

Call it what it is: genocide.

The media’s biased narratives continue to perpetuate and justify the violence against Palestinians, Muslims and Arabs.

Stop the genocide and end apartheid. There is nothing in the world that can justify 900+ deaths of mainly children, women, men, doctors, nurses, and refugees. So far 1500 children have been murdered by Israeli and American bombs.

So many folks have reached out, unable to speak up– the censorship and risk one faces when daring to denounce the illegal Israeli occupation and war crimes is profound. We are with you 💔

We cannot afford the human, environmental and financial costs of war.

The consequences are devastating to people and the planet at every scale.

While people are displaced from their homes, we continue to destroy our collective home. We need collective liberation more than ever.

Aya Ghanameh’s new children’s book, These Olive Trees: A Palestinian Family’s Story, is a haunting tale about how a Palestinian family, already living in a refugee camp in Nablus, are displaced after the 1967 war between Israel and several Arab states.

Author Aya Ghanameh, 24, grew up in Jordan before arriving in the US as a student in 2018.

She studied art direction and illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), spending much of her time writing and illustrating comics that frequently revolve around her Palestinian identity.

She says that as a budding artist, it wasn’t a particularly deliberate decision to focus on Palestine, but anti-Palestinian sentiment in the US made her want to restate her Palestinian history and identity by illustrating it in a school project - one that ended up taking on a life of its own.

After she completed the project, she posted images of her mock book on social media and found herself inundated with enquiries about how to buy it. Amused, she told the wellwishers that the book was just a school project and not for sale.

But then a publisher got in touch and suggested she have it published. Ghanameh found an agent, and the next thing she knew, Penguin Random House’s Viking imprint bought it, while asking her to slightly expand on it.

Earlier this year, Penguin hired her as a book designer. Now, she is designing an entire generation of picture books, board books and graphic novels for the publishing behemoth.

Indeed, she hopes that this book will plant a seed in the minds of children in the US and elsewhere.

“I wanted to write something that felt a little universal. And because the Zionist narrative is so overwhelming, it is important that we keep speaking about what happened to us. It’s a form of truth telling and that’s what is important to me.”

With over 120 varieties of moss, the worlds most beautiful moss garden is actually found within a functioning and practicing Buddhist Temple in Kyoto.

From dense and richly green layered moss, to sponge and cushion-like moss, including Polytrichum and several other bryophyte species. Find 杉苔(sugi goke, Polytrichum juniperinum) named for its tall height resembling sugi (cedar) trees, to ハイゴケ (hai goke, Hypnum plumaeforme) meaning crawling moss, a resilient variety growing horizontally. We spoke with the gardener who noted that meticulous maintenance includes pruning shrubs to resemble lumpy mounds or cushions, protecting the site from wild boar, and closing for winter season.

Did you know that most of our clothing is predominantly made from materials derived from fossil fuels? Polyester, the most widely used fiber in the clothing industry is a form of plastic derived from.....crude oil. ⛽😬

The transition from natural fibers like cotton, wool, and silk to synthetic (plastic) materials began in the early 20th century with the invention of rayon. As technology advanced, fabrics like nylon and polyester emerged, derived from petrochemicals. 🧪👩🏾‍🔬

These new materials offered durability, easy maintenance, and cost-effectiveness, quickly gaining popularity in the fashion industry. By the 21st century, synthetic materials accounted for over 60% of global fiber production. ‼️

The production process of these synthetic materials involves oil extraction, transportation, refining, and manufacturing into the final product. Each step in this process releases greenhouse gases, contributing to climate change. 💨Additionally, the washing of synthetic clothes leads to the release of microplastics, tiny particles that pollute waterways and ecosystems, posing an environmental concern. 🌊🏭

Given the environmental impact, one might question why the fashion industry continues to use synthetic fibers. The reasons are manifold.

Firstly, synthetic fibers are versatile and can be engineered to possess specific properties such as stretch, water resistance, or durability. This makes them ideal for a variety of clothing, including activewear and everyday apparel.

Secondly, synthetic fibers are often more cost-effective to produce than natural ones. They require fewer land, water, and other resources compared to natural crops. From a business perspective, they offer higher profit margins, making them appealing to manufacturers and retailers.

Lastly, the high demand for cheap, fast fashion drives the preference for low-cost materials like synthetics. Consumers seeking the latest styles at affordable prices contribute to the market demand for clothing made with synthetic fibers.

Want to work fewer days from the office? You could be doing the planet a favor too 👀

Fully remote workers could produce less than half the climate-warming emissions of people who spend their days in offices, according to a new study published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Researchers found that switching from working onsite to working from home full time may reduce a person’s carbon footprint by more than 50 percent. Hybrid schedules where people work remotely for two to four days a week could also cut emissions by 11 to 29 percent, according to the study.

The study found that working remotely more than one day per week could cut emissions, mainly driven by less office energy use and commuting. But the researchers cautioned against assuming that any amount of remote work could be good for the planet.

Apple claims its new Apple Watch is carbon neutral and has done impressive work to decarbonize its supply chain, but making new stuff always leaves a mark on the climate.

Let’s be clear: Most companies don’t make such laudable efforts to clean up their supply chains. Many are currently battling with US regulators over whether they should even be expected to tally up those emissions at all. They cry foul, citing their deep and complicated supply chains. Go back far enough—to, say, the distant processors of the ores that become the minerals that become their computer chips or face creams or coffee cups—and companies claim not to even know who to call upon to clean up their act. Oh, and it’s too expensive. Hardly worth the trouble.

Apple’s supply chain efforts, though heroic by comparison, illustrate the limits of how far corporate greening can get you toward carbon neutral—only about three-quarters of the way by the company’s estimation. Boats still burn fuel, after all. Recycled materials can’t cover everything. More stuff is still more stuff. So the rest comes from carbon credits, generated from investments in nature conservation and restoration projects intended to sock away CO2 so it can’t warm the globe.

is making progress toward reducing the carbon emissions involved in making its alluring products, in a world that still makes that hard to do. But perhaps it’s time to retire the phrase. No, your new watch isn’t carbon neutral. It’s more stuff, and more stuff always leaves a mark.
