On Monday, the faculty at Columbia University, New York, had organized a walkout in solidarity with the students protesting against the Israeli genocide at Gaza. The faculty were also walking out to protest the arrest of 100s of students from the encampment on campus. As such a remarkable event, the walkout signifies a new emerging politics of student-faculty solidarity on American university campuses over the pressing issues of our times. What needs to be noted is that, Israel has been losing it's legitimacy amongst a considerable section of intellectuals and academics in US, many of whom identify as Jewish. In response, the state and the university administrations have reacted with an attack on academic freedom, that can only be compared to the McCarthyism of an earlier era.

The jury of the 53rd International Film Festival in Goa, headed by Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid, has slammed the movie “The Kashmir Files", calling it a "propaganda" and a "vulgar movie". Navad said that all of them in the jury were disturbed and shocked to see the film screened at the festival.
“It seemed to us like a propagandist movie inappropriate for an artistic, competitive section of such a prestigious film festival," Mr Lapid said in his address.

Villagers in Deocha threaten to restart dharna
Last week, on 13th April, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met the representatives of 'Birbhum Zami Jeevan Jibika O Prakriti Bachao Mahasabha', on the Deocha Pachami coal mine project. After the meeting, the members of Mahasabha said that they have received a positive response from the Chief Minister on this issue. The Chief Minister reportedly assured them that the government will not go ahead with the coal mine project in Deucha, even if the locals do not want it.
Exactly one week after this discussion, on Monday 17th April, the District Magistrate of Birbhum went to Deocha to create public opinion in support of the mining project and to distribute 'Cheques' among the villagers. He entered the area with a large police force. But, after facing protests from the local villagers, the DM was forced to return back from the area.
The meeting with the Chief Minister happened after a 52-day long dharna in Dewanganj. Although the protesters had decided to call off the dharna after the discussion with the CM, after today's incident, a section of the local protesters are saying that they will restart the dharna again if the project is forced upon them.

১৩ এপ্রিল 'বীরভূম জমি জীবন জীবিকা ও প্রকৃতি বাঁচাও মহাসভা'-র প্রতিনিধিদের সঙ্গে মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় দেউচা-পাঁচামি কয়লা খনি প্রকল্প বিষয়ে নবান্নতে একটি বৈঠক করেন। এই বৈঠকের পর মহাসভার প্রতিনিধিরা জানান, মুখ্যমন্ত্রীর থেকে তাঁরা এই বিষয়ে ইতিবাচক সাড়া পেয়েছেন। জানা যায় মুখ্যমন্ত্রী তাঁদের এ কথা স্পষ্ট করে জানিয়েছেন যে, যদি এলাকাবাসী না চায় তবে দেউচাতে কয়লা খনি প্রকল্প বাতিল করতে সরকার পিছপা হবে না।

Odisha : The proposed steel plant site of JSW in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district on Friday ( 14 January, 2022) turned into a battlefield as villagers clashed with the police over demolition of betel vines. The incident occurred near Dhinkia village, which happens to be the epicenter of the peoples’ movement against the setting up of a steel plant by Posco a decade ago.
The South Korean global steel giant POSCO was forced to withdraw from Odisha in 2017, after witnessing years of intense protests from the villagers. After POSCO’s exit, the Odisha state government handed over the land acquired for the project to JSW for its proposed integrated steel plant. This has forced the villagers to once again organize themselves and resist this renewed attempt to snatch their land, lives and livelihoods.

দেওয়ানগঞ্জে মহিলাদের বাধা। ফিরল তৃণমূলের মিছিল।
দেউচা-পাচামির দেওয়ানগঞ্জে তৃণমূলের মিছিলে বাধা দিল গ্রামের মহিলারা। গতকাল ওই অঞ্চলে তৃণমূলের স্থানীয় প্রথম সারির নেতাদের তত্ত্বাবধানে এই মিছিল গ্রামে ঢুকলে 'কয়লা খনি চাই না' বলে প্রতিবাদ করতে থাকেন মহিলারা। তৃণমূলের মিছিলের ব্যানারে লেখা ছিল, "দেওয়ানগঞ্জ হরিণশিঙায় শান্তিবিঘ্নকারী বহিরাগতরা দূর হটো।" সম্প্রতি দেওয়ানগঞ্জে খনিবিরোধী সভা করে জমি বাঁচাও কমিটি। সভা করার অপরাধে ন'জন উদ্যোক্তার বিরুদ্ধে ভারতীয় দণ্ডবিধির বিভিন্ন ধারায় মামলা করে পুলিশ। এই ঘটনায় ক্ষুব্ধ ছিলেন ওই মহিলারা।
প্রত্যক্ষদর্শীদের মতে, বাঁশ, লাঠি হাতে মিছিল আটকে দেন কতিপয় মহিলা। পুলিশ বাহিনীর হস্তক্ষেপে মিছিল সেখান থেকে বেরিয়ে গেলেও মহম্মদবাজার ওসি-র নেতৃত্বে মহিলাদের উপর ব্যাপক লাঠিচার্জ করা হয়। আহত হন বেশ কয়েকজন
18 December 2021 : Eight women employed in the Foxconn, IPhone manufacturing company located in Tamil Nadu's Sriperumbudur Special Industrial Area (SEZ), allegedly died of food poisoning after having food in the canteen of the plant on Friday. The company management tried to hush up the incident. Thousands of enraged workers have blocked the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway since midnight on Friday in protest.
There has been no official news of workers death till now. The workers are continuing the protests at 2-3 sites.

Last update : The Hindu has reported that rumour spread that one of the women worker of Foxconn has died due to food poisoning, which led to protest by a section of women workers, who squatted on the National Highway and blocked traffic in Sriperumbur, according to official sources.
