Amaibis : Although eastern concepts cannot be exactly defined in terms of those developed in the western world, Amaibi may be regarded as shamans of the Meetei society. They are multifaceted religious functionaries who have several traits combined together in a single personality. They have characteristic features of a priestess, female shaman, fortune teller, clairvoyant, ritual expert, ritual singer and dancer. The majority of them are chosen individuals for their sacred duty by a particular deity who possesses them. There are also Nupa (Male) Amaibis. ( )

Spirit Possession ( Lai Tongba ) : Like many South East Asian societies , Meeteis have a strong tradition of spirit possession . When a person , generally a young adult , is possessed by one of the Lais (gods) , she can go on to become a shaman ( Amaibi ) or with the help of other shamans , "suppressed" and exorcise her possession , thereby helping the girl live a relatively normal life ( the girl's face has been intentionally blurred ) ( )
