In the last decade, apart from publishing the magazine every month and children’s storybooks, a lot of our work entails creating awareness, sharing experiences, busting myths related to persons with disabilities.
On the occasion of International Day of People with Disabilities, sharing a few observations and pointers that you could incorporate at work, social media and personal interactions to encourage inclusion.
1. While using social media for your brand pages etc, use the Alt Text feature or write the image Description in your post.
2. Capitalise the first letter of the word for a hashtag. For instance to make the word meaningful for screen reader users.
3. Encourage dialogue and workshops around inclusion in your office, schools, organisations you may be working with. Awareness is the first step towards building an inclusive & diverse culture.
4. Encourage applications from persons with disabilities for job opportunities in your company. Talk to the HR Manager and introduce them to the importance of having a DEIB training.
5. Talk to your child about any doubts or questions they’d have about persons with disabilities. Watch videos together, read books that will sow seeds of inclusion in their minds.
6. Add some Braille books to your library in school, office, colleges, airports, hotels.
7. If you run a restaurant, print one, just one menu card in Braille. Small steps towards building inclusive spaces contribute a whole lot to bigger picture.
