Silk Route of the Seas
The stretch from Mongolia to Western Europe was once a part of the fabled Silk Route that passed through Central Asia and India which was made famous by the merchants and their mercantile activities.Similarly, there was a 'Silk Route' of the seas which was made famous by the Tamil Hindu merchants stretching from Sri Lanka to Indonesia. This entire stretch right up to Philippines was influenced by the Hinduism that was carried forward with the Tamil merchants leaving a very deep impact on the local culture which later was a fusion of Hindu and local culture.Starting from the Pallava kingdom to the Cholas, the Tamil merchants and navy were very active from Bay of Bengal to South China Sea. The Pallava influence can be clearly seen from 7th century onwards in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, Java in Indonesia but politically, it was Rajendra Chola in 1025 AD conquered Kedah in present day Malaysia which made the entire stretch generally known as Kadaram or the colonial and naval history of ancient Tamil Hindu empire. The best example of art in Far east due to ancient Tamil Hindu colonial influence is the Angkor Wat of Cambodia which is an UNESCO World Heritage site. Since Vedic age, autocracy in the form of ruler was the political basis and hereditary organisation in India. The concept of Rajanya has always been attributed to the Kshatriya Hindu caste as protectors and patrons of Brahmins, Vaishya and Sudras. In Kolhapur, a controversy erupted in 1901 when the head priest of Kolhapur royal family who are descendants of Shivaji Maharaj Chhatrapati himself and the Brahmin association of Kolhapur, Brahmovrinda started challenging the authority of the then Maharaja of Kolhapur Shahu Chhatrapati. It all started from Panchganga incident in 1901. During the Shravani month, once Shahu Maharaja decided to perform his morning pujas in the presence of Brahmins. A Brahmin was appointed for that. But when the Brahmin was caught that he has not taken bath and is doing Vedic chants in an impure way, Shahu Maharaj stopped the puja. Since then, a huge clash started between the head priest or Rajopadhye backed by Brahmovinda against Shahu Maharaja. Their argument was that as he was born into Ghatge family before his adoption, he was not born Kshatriya but Ghatges were always considered Kshatriya. Besides, since Rig Veda, the meaning of Kshatriya is not essentially since birth but by action whose duty is to provide protection and patronising the 3 other castes. Hence A ruler is a Kshatriya naturally. Hence how can the Vedic rites and rituals be denied to Shahu Maharaja or any Non Kshatriya or Non Brahmin by the Brahmins. It was in a way authority external to Shahu Maharaj. The Brahmins were like independent islands who wanted the ruler to be ruled by the Brahmins. Brahmavrinda tried their best to rope in the English Resident and at capital of India but failed to do so. They even boycotted some Brahmins who supported Shahu Chhatrapati but despite all the pressures, Shahu Chhatrapati did his duty as a Kshatriya ruler and confiscated all the benefits of the errand Brahmins!! #tiqd #theindianquest #maharaja #Kolhapur #shahuchhatrapati #ghatge #kagal
Dr Kotnis
The concept of 'HINDI-CHINI, BHAI BHAI' got a severe beating after 1962 - Indo China war. Since then, Indian Govt has always regarded China as an enemy. But do you know an ordinary Doctor from interior Solapur in Maharashtra became a legendary figure in modern China's history. Yes, in 1938, at the backdrop of Sino - Japan War, Chinese Communist leaders including Mao Zedong requested Nehru and Congress Party in India to send some medical relief to China for the wounded soldiers in the battlefield. At that time, the President of Congress Party was Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Bose collected a donation of Rs 22K and also sent with the money a team of 5 doctors which included Dr Kotnis. Dr Kotnish after arriving in China, became untiringly engaged in the treatment of the wounded soldiers at the battle field. Though 4 of the doctors came back to India, but Dr Kotnis stayed back. He is said to have performed non stop 72 hours of surgery without sleep on 800 soldiers. In China, he fell in love with a Chinese nurse and married her in 1941. They had a son in 1942 and 3 months after his birth, Dr Kotnis died of epilepsy. If any European community left a far flung influence in India, it was the Portuguese. They dominated the entire coastline of India from West to East. Their influence is still very much presence in our day to day life like food, words, our mother tongue. Basically, their imprint is still present in India. One such Portuguese blood was Anthony Phiringee. He was born to a Portuguese father and Bengali mother in 1786. Though his early life is unknown, he made a tremendous name for himself in Bard Duels which were literally poetic musical contests with mythology and religion as premise. This was also called Kabir Larai in Bengali. His contest with Bhola Moira is still famous. As there were no paintings of him, photos of Bengali actor Uttam Kumar has been put up who played the title role of same name. Anthony died in 1836. He also established Phiringee Kali Bari in Kolkata. #tiqd #theindianquest #antthonyphiringee #anthonyfiringi #calcutta #anglo #portuguese #bardduels #kabirlarai #bholamoira #hindushakta #shakta #phiringeekalibari #bowbazar #calcutta #india #history #culture #society #lifestyle

Have you ever guessed how Indian Maharanis traveled abroad given they had to retain and respect the orthodox Purdah rules of their royal families?! Well, some of the bigger Princely states had abandoned Purdah but not covering of the head of the royal ladies. Britain's Imperial Airlines started their maiden commercial passenger flights in 1918 onwards and in the London - Bombay route, Maharani of Cooch Behar was the first Maharani to travel ever. Like modern day Kardashians who highly display their jet Luxe life almost everyday, the period between end of WWI and start of WW2 did show increase of consumption of jet Luxe life by the Maharanis. Also by this time, major royal families had built their own aerodromes and had their own private planes. Hence the earlier sailing by ship for foreign trips was replaced by airline services like Imperial Airways or chartered flights. These flights also provided comfort to the royal ladies and Indirectly helped preserving some of the Purdah traditions. This entire flow of jet setting life was altered completely due to end of WW2 and Indian Independence. #tiqd #theindianquest #maharani #princelystates #royalfamiliesofindia #jetsetlife #jetsetter #imperialairlines #bombaylondonroute #luxelife #jetluxelife #luxuryflights #luxuryinair #palaceinair #lifestyle #society #culture #history #vintage #india
Ghugni (link in bio) is an East Indian lentil based snack cooked with dried white peas or Kabuli Matar. It's a mild spice based lentil soup which is consumed with chopped onions and lemon juice just like a snack. As white peas is a high energy food, many prefer the gravy as dry and thick. But for easy digestion, the gravy should be light by using chopped veggies, not in paste form. It keeps the soup lighter. Ghugni is a compulsive snack even in Bengal villages. Bengali cuisine can best be described as less is more. It's simple and minimalistic just like French cuisine. Regarding Ghugni, peas originated from India and Afghanistan which was once a part of India was the birth place of white peas. White peas is a warm food great for winter. Try the recipe. It's simple but flavorsome. #tiqd #theindianquest #ghugni #bengalisnack #kabulimatar #whitepeas #bengalicuisine #foodie #culinary #india #cooking #history #lifestyle #culture #society #vegan #spicy #lessismore
