Hi world

24/04/2024

14 April 2014, Elections were going on in Kashmir with the least participation of Kashimris. As usual government employees were asked to join election duties in high security. I was surfing Facebook all day to check how people are responding to the boycott call given by certain organizations.

In the evening election process was over and on Facebook a BREAKING NEWS started circulating “Encounter between security forces and militants in South Kashmir”. This was a usual news story but what catched my eye was “A polling officer was killed in the exchange of fire”...

I started getting nervous and getting deeper in the news stories covering this incident. After 20 minutes or so I got to know the killed one is a school teacher from south Kashmir’s Shopian, my hometown. My heartbeat started accelerating and trying to find out who has attained martyrdom? Every page was posting same story without the name of the dead teacher.

More 15 minutes passed, my dad was taking a bath and in the middle he came out from washroom taking deep and long breaths. I sensed something big has happened. He asked for a glass of water. Before taking first sip he said “I got a call, there is encounter at Nagbal”. He took another sip from the glass of water and sighs “Zia has received a bullet”. He took a long pause and we all were looking at his face and waiting for the words which he was trying to say. “He is dead on spot”.

I don’t know what pinched me deep inside I started crying like a kid, my voice started fainting and words were not coming up on my lips. This was the second time I was crying in front of my family members in April. This incident shattered us all, we were shocked.

Whole night I was waiting for the morning, maybe the longest night of my life. The thoughts of never seeing him again were making it darker night. Every small sound was haunting, every viral picture of him on Social Media was slowing down my breath layer after layer.

It was raining since morning, people surrounding their home waiting for his dead body. His colleagues who survived the attack were numb. Neighbours were preparing for his burial with tent, bed, coffin and two big blocks of wood. Most of the people were under shop fronts to keep themselves dry till last rites.

His body reached his home amid rain, cries and tears. His bruised neck with the bullet was still oozing blood, the blood of martyr. His Yellowish Brown shoes had the blood drops painting a new picture of Kashmir. I touched his shoes trying to ask for forgiveness for everything. He came, he made everyone cry and he left.

I remember when he was taken down inside the grave, a magnetic force like thing was pulling something from me. Again the same thought, I will not be able to see you again. Please let me see him one last time, please, but no he had gone, for ever. He will never come back, he left so early but he left a martyr.

After his martyrdom teachers association of Shopian observed a peaceful protest to investigate the incident. Authorities setup an investigation as usual and after 10 years is still a mystery. This is not a unique story, thousands of people were killed in Kashmir during elections since 1954. Hoping for a peaceful 2024 elections, Kashmir can’t afford any bloodshed now.
