Always work with dialogue, placeholder sfx and music to get the complete essence of the edit. Sound is half of the experience and has to be factored in while editing. Without the use of essential sound layers, you might be watching a half baked film.

EDIT TIP 5/6

J & L cuts simply put is a technique in which audio is used to transition between scenes. J cut is when the audio which might be a dialog/sfx from the next scene starts over the last shot of the current scene. L cut is when the audio of the current scene continues over the first shot of the next scene.

This technique is used to create intrigue mostly and helps in a smooth transition between scenes.

EDIT TIP 4/6

Every scene has to advance the story and in order to facilitate this, repetitive exposition appearing in scenes can be removed by taking an early exit.

As an editor goes through multiple drafts of the edit, multiple exit points in a scene become clearer. Eventually, the idea is to communicate to the audience just enough,neither too much nor too little, while maintaining suspense and intrigue for what's about to come next.

Editor Walter Murch in his six rules of editing states that emotion continuity takes precedence over action match cuts. Infact this is the first rule in the list and explains that this should be the main motivation to cut in narrative sequences.

Editing was a big undertaking given the genre and the sheer amount of content that was shot. The first cut of the all the episodes were ready in two months- March to May 2020. The subsequent cuts took a while as the other departments entered post-production. Eventually, after QC and S&P by Applause, around 3000 corrections, 10-12 versions/episode, the final cuts were out by July-August 2021.

It's been a big collaboration of sorts with all the production houses and post production studios involved. Also a great learning and exposure to industry standard practices and protocols.

All this was possible, because, on a fine day, two people over a cup of tea thought, "why don't we make a web series on Nograj". This eventually led to the employment of hundreds of professionals and today to a release, viewership and a successful show.

So thank you

for the project. :)
