Zomato, Swiggy Boost Festive Incentives as Gig Workers Stage Nationwide Strike

Food delivery majors Zomato and Swiggy have increased incentives for delivery partners ahead of New Year’s Eve, anticipating a surge in orders during the festive period—even as thousands of gig workers across India went on strike demanding better pay, social security, and improved working conditions. Zomato said the enhanced payouts announced for 31 December are part of its “standard annual operating protocol” for high-demand occasions, and not linked to the strike. The company highlighted that festive periods typically offer higher earning opportunities, with more than 23,000 partners reportedly earning over ₹1,500 on Christmas Day.

India Equities Poised for Stronger 2026 After Year of Relative Underperformance

India’s benchmark stock indexes are expected to deliver stronger returns in 2026, supported by improving corporate earnings, stable economic growth and more attractive valuations after lagging global and Asian peers in 2025. The Nifty 50 and Sensex gained 10.5% and 9.1% respectively in 2025 — extending their winning streak to a tenth straight year — but trailed emerging-market and Asia-Pacific indexes that surged between 27% and 30%. Analysts at Goldman Sachs say policy support, better earnings visibility and improving foreign risk appetite could help Indian equities outperform in the coming year.

Indian Banks’ Bad Loan Ratios Seen Improving, but NBFC Risks Rise: RBI Report

Indian banks may see their gross bad loan ratio fall further from already low levels in the coming financial year, even as early signs of stress emerge among non-bank lenders, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s latest Financial Stability Report released on Wednesday. The central bank said gross bad loans could decline to 1.9% by March 2027 under its baseline scenario, compared with 2.1% at the end of September 2025, supported by resilient economic growth and strong financial system fundamentals.

Vodafone Idea Gets Five-Year AGR Moratorium, But No Waiver; Shares Slide 11%

India has approved a partial moratorium on Vodafone Idea’s adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues, freezing payments worth about $9.76 billion and deferring repayment into the 2030s, a government source told Reuters. The move halts further interest and penalties, with repayments set to begin in 2031-32 and continue through 2040-41, offering the debt-laden telecom operator short-term cash-flow relief without reducing the overall dues.

Labour Codes May Raise Company Wage Bills by Up to 10%, Industry Estimates

The implementation of India’s new Labour Codes is expected to increase employers’ wage bills by around 1.5% to 10%, according to industry estimates. Employer associations have been engaging with the Labour Ministry, highlighting concerns over higher costs arising from revised provisions on wages, gratuity, and bonus calculations. The ministry has recently released draft rules for the four Labour Codes to bring clarity on these aspects.

COAI Flags RoW Dispute With Adani-Owned Navi Mumbai Airport Over High Telecom Charges

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has approached the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) alleging that Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL), owned by the Adani Group, has denied Right of Way (RoW) permissions and imposed excessive charges for deploying telecom infrastructure at the newly operational airport. Commercial operations at the airport began on December 25. COAI has sought regulatory intervention, claiming NMIAL’s actions violate statutory frameworks and amount to monopolistic practices, a charge the airport operator has denied.

India Plans New LPG Subsidy Formula as US Imports Rise

The Indian government is considering an overhaul of the methodology used to calculate liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) subsidies after a sharp increase in long-term LPG imports from the United States, according to a report by The Economic Times. State-run fuel retailers recently signed year-long supply contracts with US exporters, prompting calls to revise the current benchmark, which is based on the Saudi Contract Price — a reference suited to Middle East-sourced cargoes. Oil companies have argued that the Saudi-linked formula no longer reflects real costs, particularly as US LPG involves significantly higher freight charges.
