Mystery of Singhadwara

A Strange phenomenon is observed here. While entering from the first step of the Singhadwara, from inside the Jagannath Mandir, you will notice that there is no audible sound of ocean. However, as you enter the temple from outside, you will be able to hear the sounds of ocean.  This phenomenon is more prominent during the evenings. I observed that I could not hear any sound of sea waves as I was inside the Jagannath Temple premises. You can also try this. After entering the temple, turn back and walk in the direction you entered in the temple. You will still hear no sounds of sea waves. The temple has a total of 4 doors.

Kopeshwar Temple is at Khidrapur, Kolhapur district, Maharashtra. It is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. This temple is in Maharashtra It is also accessible from Sangli as well. It was built in the 12th century by Shilahara king Gandaraditya between 1109 and 1178 CE. It is to the east of Kolhapur, ancient & artistic on the bank of the Krishna river. Even though Silaharas were Jain kings, they built and renovated various Hindu temples, thus depicting their respect and love for all religions. Kopeshwar means angry Shiva .
The entire temple is divided into four parts Swargamandapa, Sabhamandapa,Antaral kaksha and Garbha gruha. The Swargamandapa has a vestibule with an open top. The sanctum is conical. The exterior has stunning carvings of deities and secular figures. Elephant statues sustain the weight of the temple at the base. In the interior, we first see Vishnu (Dhopeshwar) & Shivaling facing north. But there is no Nandi who has a separate Mandir. Separate Actor-Pendal also called swarga mandap, hall, old pillars, carvings of gods & male and female artists in various poses are attractive. The ceiling is semi-circular with matchless engravings. On the outside, complete 'Shivaleelamrit' is carved. The Kopeshwara, an ancient & artistic temple situated on the bank of Krishna is a fine example of ancient sculpture. It was built in the 11-12 century by Shilahara. The ceiling is semi-circular with matchless engravings. Inside there is a statue of Vishnu( Dhopeshwar) and Shivling " Kopeshwar " facing north. There is no Nandi who has a separate Mandir. Separate Actor-Pendal, hall, old pillars, carvings of gods & male-female artists in various poses are attractive. This is the only Shiva temple in India with an idol of Vishnu.

My Son Sanctuary
Between the 4th and 13th centuries a unique culture which owed its spiritual origins to Indian Hinduism developed on the coast of contemporary Viet Nam. This is graphically illustrated by the remains of a series of impressive tower-temples located in a dramatic site that was the religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom for most of its existence.

My Son Sanctuary dates from the 4th to the 13th centuries CE. The property is located in the mountainous border Duy Xuyen District of Quang Nam Province, in central Viet Nam. It is situated within an elevated geological basin surrounded by a ring of mountains, which provides the watershed for the sacred Thu Bon river. The source of the Thu Bon river is here and it flows past the monuments, out of the basin, and through the historic heartland of the Champa Kingdom, draining into the South China Sea at its mouth near the ancient port city of Hoi An. The location gives the sites its strategic significance as it is also easily defensible

Warangal Fort is located in Warangal District, Telangana, India. It was the capital city of Kakatiya dynasty and Musunuri Nayakas. It appears to have existed since at least the 12th century when it was the capital of the Kakatiyas. The fort has four ornamental gates, known as Kakatiya Kala Thoranam, that originally formed the entrances to a now ruined great Shiva temple. The Kakatiyan arch has been adopted and officially incorporated into the emblem of Telangana after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. The fort is included in the "tentative list" of UNESCO World Heritage Site and was submitted by the Permanent Delegation of India to UNESCO on 10/09/2010

Hazara Rama Temple is a dominant shrine in Karnataka. This small but beautiful place of worship dedicated to Lord Rama is located at the center of the royal area of Hampi. The temple which was the private temple of the kings of Vijayanagara is popular for the lovely relics and panels depicting the story of the epic Ramayana.

It was built in the early 15th century by King of Vijayanagara, Devaraya II, and was constructed as a simple structure. It comprised of only a sanctum, pillared hall, and an Ardha mandapa. However, later it was revamped for an open porch and beautiful pillars. A lawn is situated on the northern side of the temples and two large gateways lead to the temple compound.

The Temple which is a distinctive temple in many aspects has obtained its name from the multiple relics portraying the prime deity of the temple, Lord Rama. The walls convey the story of Ramayana carved on stone. The outer walls of the temple are embellished with bas-relics of Rama and Krishna.

The relics also depict processions of horses, elephants, attendants, soldiers, and dancing women taking part in the Dasara festival rally at that time. There are amongst the most unique ones to be found anywhere in India. The Temple stands as an example of the marvelous craftsmanship of Vijayanagara’s sculpture.

Photograph of the Lion Capital at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, from the Kitchener of Khartoum Collection: 'Views of Benares. Presented by the Maharaja of Benares' by Madho Prasad, c.1905 .

Sarnath is the sacred place where the Buddha preached his first sermon known as the Wheel of Law, the Dharmachakra, in the sixth century BC. The Lion capital comes from a column at Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh, built by Ashoka, the Mauryan king who flourished in the third century BC. According to tradition, the pillars were raised at various points on the route of a pilgrimage that he undertook in the twentieth year of his reign. The capital, which became the national emblem of India in 1950, is in a museum in Sarnath.

The Lion capital is a polished sandstone carving of four lions atop an abacus (the slab forming the top of a column). The lions are facing in four directions and on the abacus are eight images. Immediately below each lion is a dharmachakra, or wheel, with twenty-four spokes.

This wheel has been incorporated into the national flag of India. Between the wheels are four animals – a lion, a horse, an elephant and a bull. Falling from the abacus is an upturned, bell-shaped lotus flower.

Akhand Bharat/Akhand Hindustan (Undivided India), is a term for the concept of a unified Greater India. It asserts that modern-day Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Myanmar,Pakistan, and Sri Lanka are one nation.
Chanakya (375–283 BCE) was an ancient Indian polymath who was active as a teacher, author, strategist, philosopher, economist, jurist, and royal advisor. He is traditionally identified as Kauṭilya or Vishnugupta, who authored the ancient Indian political treatise, the Arthashastra, a text dated to roughly between the fourth century BCE and the third century CE. As such, he is considered the pioneer of the field of political science and economics in India, and his work is thought of as an important precursor to classical economics. His works were lost near the end of the Gupta Empire in the sixth century CE and not rediscovered until the early 20th century. Around 321 BCE, Chanakya assisted the first Mauryan emperor Chandragupta in his rise to power and is widely credited for having played an important role in the establishment of the Maurya Empire. Chanakya served as the chief advisor to both emperors Chandragupta and his son Bindusara.

Stone temple car in the Vitthala Temple, Vijayanagara - 1856

Photograph of the Vitthala Temple at Vijayanagara in Karnataka, taken in about 1856 by Andrew Charles Brisbane Neill. Vijayanagara, the City of Victory, was the seat of a powerful Hindu kingdom in Southern India from 1336 to 1565. The kingdom was founded by two brothers, Harihara and Bukka, formerly chieftains with the Delhi Sultanate. Vijayanagara flourished as a prosperous centre of Hindu art, culture and architecture, until the Battle of Talikota in 1565 when it was defeated by the armies of a coalition of neighbouring Muslim kingdoms, its rivals for supremacy in the Deccan. The ruins of this vast royal city on the bank of the Tungabhadra River lie surrounded by granite hills. The site is also known as Hampi, together with a small local village nearby. The Vitthala temple dedicated to a form of Vishnu is one of the greatest monuments at the site. It is thought to date from the first quarter of the 16th century. It stands within a rectangular courtyard surrounded by cloisters, and the main shrine has a sanctum with a closed ambulatory and is capped with a stepped pyramidal superstructure. An outstanding feature is its glorious open hall or mahamandapa which has dozens of beautifully carved granite pillars. In front of the temple is another celebrated feature, a stone ratha or chariot housing an image of Garuda, the vehicle of Vishnu, created like a shrine in miniature, but with wheels.

Vijaya Stambha, or Tower of Victory, at Chittaurgarh - 1847

This is plate 11 from James Fergusson's book 'Ancient Architecture in Hindostan'. This picture shows the Vijaya Stambha inside the fort at Chittaurgarh, Rajasthan. It was constructed in 1448 by Rana Kumbha to commemorate his victory over Muhammad Khilji of Malwa eight years earlier. The tower is visible from miles around, spanning nine storeys, with balconies and an internal staircase. Images of Vishnu and other Hindu divinities cover the walls.
