State-owned UCO Bank has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to look into a potential cyberattack after the bank faced a technical issue with its Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) system. Between November 10 and 13, around Rs 820 crore was wrongly credited to UCO Bank customers due to an internal glitch.

UCO Bank Managing Director Ashwani Kumar did not confirm if it was a cyberattack but said the bank is investigating the exact cause. The bank has recovered 79% of the erroneously transferred amount so far, or around Rs 649 crore. It is working to recover the remaining Rs 171 crore.

UCO Bank has blocked the accounts that received the wrong credits and brought down its IMPS channel. It aims to restore IMPS in two to three days after ensuring systems are secure. The Reserve Bank of India is also looking into the glitch.

UCO Bank has assured that its other critical systems remain operational and secure. In its latest financial results, the Kolkata-based public sector bank reported a 20.4% decline in quarterly net profit due to lower non-interest income and higher expenses.

A tragic bus accident occurred on Wednesday in the Assar area of Jammu province, India. An overloaded passenger bus carrying 56 people in a 42-seater bus skidded off the road while overtaking another vehicle.

The bus fell into a gorge, resulting in the deaths of 38 people, including 11 women. 18 others were injured. The driver also died in the accident.

Locals, police, army and NGOs launched rescue operations. 28 people died on the spot, 8 at a nearby hospital and 1 at another hospital. 4 critically injured were airlifted to a hospital in Jammu.

Most of the deceased have been identified. Police say the driver may have lost control of the speeding bus while taking a curve on the highway. An investigation into the bus condition and driver is underway.

This was a preventable tragedy caused by overcrowding and likely reckless driving. Condolences to the families who lost loved ones in this terrible accident. Authorities must take steps to enforce occupancy limits on buses and better training for drivers to prevent such accidents in the future.
