June 21st ~ World Music Day

World Music Day, is an annual music celebration that takes place on 21 June. On Music Day, citizens and residents are urged to play music outside in their neighborhoods or in public spaces and parks. Free concerts are also organized, where musicians play for fun and not for payment. The first all-day musical celebration on the day of the summer solstice was originated by Jack Lang, then Minister of Culture of France, as well as by Maurice Fleuret; it was celebrated in Paris in 1982. Music Day later became celebrated in 120 countries around the world.

In October 1981, Maurice Fleuret became Director of Music and Dance at the French Ministry of Culture at Jack Lang's request. He applied his reflections to the musical practice and its evolution: "the music everywhere and the concert nowhere". When he discovered, in a 1982 study on the cultural habits of the French, that five million people, one young person out of two, played a musical instrument, he began to dream of a way to bring people out on the streets. It first took place in 1982 in Paris as the Fête de la Musique.

The day is celebrated to motivate budding, young, and professional musicians to perform and support the love of music around the world. Ever since, the festival has become an international phenomenon, celebrated on the same day in more than 700 cities in 120 countries, including India, Germany, Italy, Greece, Russia, Australia, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, Canada, the United States, the UK, and Japan.

The theme for the World Music Day 2022 is “Music on the intersections”. Music lovers on June 21, 2022 are welcomed to celebrate their love of music by attending the street fests or by simply listening to the music they love.

June 21 ~ International Day of Yoga

The International Day of Yoga has been celebrated annually on June 21 since 2015, following its inception in the United Nations General Assembly in 27th September, 2014. Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice which originated in India. The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, in his UN address in 2014, had suggested the date of June 21, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares a special significance in many parts of the world.

He stated- "Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in well being. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day."

Following this initial proposal, the UN adopted the draft resolution, entitled "Day of Yoga", on 2014. The consultations were convened by the delegation of India. In April 2017, UN Postal Administration (UNPA) issued 10 stamps on Asanas on a single sheet to mark International Day of Yoga. The theme of this year's Yoga Day celebrations is 'Yoga for Humanity' and around 25 crore people across the world are expected to take part in various events, doing yoga in unison towards better health and wellness for all.

June 3 ~ World Bicycle Day

In April 2018, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 3 as International World Bicycle Day. The resolution for World Bicycle Day recognizes "the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries, and that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport."

Professor Leszek Sibilski (who is a Polish social scientist working in the United States) led a grassroots campaign with his sociology class to promote a UN Resolution for World Bicycle Day, eventually gaining the support of Turkmenistan and 56 other countries. The original UN Blue and White logo was designed by Isaac Feld and the accompanying animation was done by Professor John E. Swanson. It depicts bicyclists of various types riding around the globe. At the bottom of the logo is the hashtag . The main message is to show that the bicycle belongs to and serves all of humanity.

World Bicycle Day is a special day meant to be enjoyed by all people regardless of any characteristic. The bicycle is a symbol of human progress and advancement "[promotes] tolerance, mutual understanding and respect and [facilitates] social inclusion and a culture of peace." The bicycle further is a "symbol of sustainable transport and conveys a positive message to foster sustainable consumption and production, and has a positive impact on climate." World Bicycle Day is now being associated with promoting a healthy lifestyle for those with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

A good number of people today own their personal vehicles such as motorbikes or cars. But on the other hand, there are also some people who are not rich enough to afford these vehicles. At most, they can have a bicycle. The World Health Organization has always mentioned the health benefits of walking and similar activities. But soon it also established the theory that cycling is another amazing exercise that helps the human body to stay fit and healthy.

2nd June~ Birthday wishes to Ilaiyaraaja & Mani Ratnam

Ilayaraja and Mani Ratnam - this combination needs no introduction. With the perfect blend of story and songs, the two have given us some of the finest memories to cherish for a lifetime. It won’t be wrong to say that Illayaraja and Mani’s creations can transport us to another planet.

And, now, on the occasion of these legends’ birthdays on June 2, let us reminisce on some of the classic songs they created.

Chinna Chinna Vanna Kuyil from Mouna Ragam:~ When Mani Ratnam’s dream film, Mouna Ragam, got materialised in 1986, Ilayaraja was at the pinnacle of his career at that time. The song Chinna Chinna changed the Tamil audience’s musical ethos. Ilaiyaraaja’s lovely piece in Carnatic raga (Gourimanohari) caught a young bride’s pure yearnings.

Raakkamma Kaiyya Thattu from Thalapthy:~ The BBC World Top Ten Music Poll included Thalapthy’s song Raakkamma Kaiyya Thattu crooned by SP Balasubrahmanyam and Swarnalatha. The music, which corresponds with the words ‘Naan unai neenga maattaen’ from the song ‘Sundari,’ warms our hearts the instant we hear it.

O Priya from Geethanjali:~ Mani Ratnam planned to make Geethanjali, a Telugu film that was presented in Tamil as Idhayathai Thirudathe in 1989. The song ‘Oh Priya Priya’ from Ilayaraja’s album earned the title of a love anthem. The most celebrated vocalist pair of all time K. S. Chithra and S. P. Balasubrahmanyam lent their voices to this love song.

Idhayam Oru Kovil from Idaya Kovil:~ Mani Ratnam’s Idaya Kovil was a musical fest as the film itself was centred on a vocalist. Though Idaya Kovil’s whole record became a smash, this was the song that touched many hearts and led to the film’s massive success. SP Balasubramaniyam’s voice blends perfectly with the classic tune by Illayaraja.

Oh Papa Laali from Geethanjali:~ This is another popular song from the film Geethanjali, which starred Nagarjuna and Girija Shettar. The song depicts the male lead’s overpowering position of stress.

TikTok parent ByteDance is looking to re-enter India, may partner with Mumbai's Hiranandani Group (01/06/2022)

Chinese video sharing app TikTok was banned along with 58 other apps such as UC Browser, Shein and more nearly two years ago over national security concerns. TikTok is now looking to re-enter India and re-hire its former employees.

According to an Economic Times report, TikTok’s parent company ByteDance is reportedly looking to re-enter India. The company reportedly wants to enter India by joining forces with a domestic firm with an intention to avoid the government’s scrutiny.

ByteDance had shut operations in 2021, nearly a year after being banned in India. The company is now reportedly in talks with Mumbai’s realty major Hiranandani Group to strike a partnership.

The Hiranandani Group runs data centre operations under the Yotta Infrastructure Solutions and recently launched Tez Platforms, a technology-led consumer services platform. The company is looking to invest INR 3,500 crore in the next two years in its latest venture.

While the talks are at a nascent stage, the company is not looking to ruffle any feathers and has informally informed the central government about its intentions of re-entering India with a local partner.

“There have been no formal talks with us yet. But we have been informed of the plans. As and when they come to us for approvals, we will examine their request,” a senior government official familiar with the matter told ET.

It’s not clear if ByteDance is looking to partner with the Hiranandani Group’s new venture Tez Platforms or is hoping to store its data in the Yotta Infrastructure Solutions’ data centres. Storing user data locally has been one of the major demands of the government.

“Critical user data should not be stored outside India. All apps and websites have either made provisions to store data locally or are making necessary changes to their data storage and processing policies. If they (Tiktok) come back, they will have to follow these norms,” an official familiar with the matter told ET.

While officials in the government have confirmed that they have been informed about ByteDance’s plans, TikTok is not confirming its plans. The company informed ET that while the company is hopeful about resuming operations, it had no plans to resume operations in India, as of now.

India was one of the biggest markets for TikTok and the company employed over 2,000 people in the country during its peak. While most of these employees have been let go, some of the employees were handed other responsibilities.

May 31- World No-To***co Day

World No To***co Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on 31 May. This yearly celebration informs the public on the dangers of using to***co, the business practices of to***co companies, what the World Health Organization (WHO) is doing to fight against the use of to***co, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations.

The Member States of the WHO created World No To***co Day in 1987 to draw global attention to the to***co epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes. The day is further intended to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of to***co use and to negative health effects, which currently lead to more than 8 million deaths each year worldwide, including 1.2 million as the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.

The day has been met with both enthusiasm and resistance around the globe from governments, public health organizations, smokers, growers, and the to***co industry. The campaign aims to spread awareness about the dangers of to***co and its negative impact on health, as well as the exploitation of the ni****ne industry that is geared towards the youth in particular.

The theme for World No To***co Day 2022 is “Protect the environment”. It highlights how to***co pollutes the earth and damages people's health throughout its whole life cycle. Every year, the theme of World No To***co Day addresses a specific issue related to to***co and its industry.
