According to environmentalists, though 3,61,229.86 hectares of land had been notified as forest area in Shivamogga Circle between 1994 and 2007, 1,08,747.35 hectares of land is yet to be mutated in RTC. They are of the view that the delay in mutation work has become a boon for encroachers. There is a strong possibility that the district may lose around 2.67 lakh acres of forest area if they are not mutated in time. Social forum Jana Sangrama Parishat has urged the officials of the forest department to take initiative in completing the long-pending mutation work.

The Supreme Court on Monday pulled up the states of Punjab and Haryana again for continued stubble burning despite the top court’s order against it, Bar and Bench reported. Earlier this month, the court had pulled up the two states along with Uttar Pradesh for failing to reduce cases of stubble burning, which is said to be one of the primary reasons for depleting pollution levels in the national Capital and parts of North India.

In its November 6 order, the court had asked the state governments to buy the stubble that was being burnt by farmers.

Weddings, exhibitions, concerts, film shoots and other events of a temporary nature may now be allowed inside forests without the requirement of prior permission from the Centre under the Forest Conservation Act, a decision that has opened a debate on their likely impact on the wilderness.

In a letter dated October 11 addressed to forest secretaries of states and union territories, a copy of which was seen by HT, the environment ministry said all such temporary activities can be conducted with approval of the divisional forest officer (DFO) of the range.
