The low-dose steroid treatment of cheap and widely available drug dexamethasone is a major breakthrough in the fight against the deadly virus.

Researchers say that up to 5,000 lives could have been saved if the drug had been used to treat patients in the UK from the start of the pandemic as the drug cut the risk of death by one third for patients on ventilators and by one fifth for those on oxygen.
This could be a huge benefit in poorer countries where the number of COVID patients are higher.

Nearly 19 out of 20 patients with coronavirus recover without being admitted to hospital. Those who are admitted recover but some may need oxygen or ventilation support.

It appears to stop the damage that can happen when the body's immune system goes into overdrive as it tries to fight off coronavirus.

A Coimbatore based textile company claims to have developed an antiviral fabric to contain the spread of coronavirus.

The textile company has introduced an anti-virus treating technology, Viro block in collaboration with a Swiss company to develop the fabric. This technology is being used on the fabrics that kill or deactivate the virus within 3 minutes of contact with it.

Sundar Raman, MD of the company told ANI, "The material has been tested internationally on the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The chemical is unique as it takes 3 minutes to deactivate the virus".

Using the technology, the product is being used to manufacture a range of N95 masks at an affordable price. N95 masks are claimed to have 10 wash cycles.

"When the COVID-19 crisis came about, we were among the earliest entrants for the manufacturing of PPE coveralls in the country, as we had pushed ourselves to develop the capability to both manufacture the material and the product using seam-sealing technology," Raman added.

Meet Ajay Naik who sold his million dollar startup to become a hydrophonic farmer. He had two successful startups , first startup was in collaboration with Lucio Misquita called L&T Tech, was sold to a German company for 1 million Euro’s.

Ajay Naik decided to take up hydrophonics - a cultivation technique of growing vegetables in water. It produces plants without use of harmful pesticides.

Ajay with his two cousins rented out 150 Sqm shed at Thivim Industrial Estate, where they started growing Lettuce & Basil in 80 Sq-m fully air conditioned room. They are able to produce 100 kg’s of vegetables everyday or 3 tons of organic vegetables every month.

“It was inspiring and motivated me to start a farm of my own as well. The fact that hydroponics involves technology, like developing a system for automatic circulation of water, controlling the parameters of temperature, humidity, etc. made me like it even more. I have been working in the IT industry for the past 10 years and I understand these things. In fact, it would have been difficult for me to understand traditional forms of agriculture,” says Naik.
