North Eastern Tea (NETA), an organisation of tea producers of the Northeast, has opposed the Central government’s gazette notification mandating a 100 per cent auction of dust tea grades from the .

According to the Tea (Marketing) Control (Amendment) Order, 2024, which will come into force from April 1, 2024, 100 per cent of dust-grade tea manufactured in a calendar year in its manufacturing units located in the area of the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal, is to be sold through public tea auctions. This does not apply to a mini tea factory.

Opposing the order, chief advisor Bidyananda Barkakaty said, “We had opposed to the Tea (Marketing) Control (Amendment) Order, 2015, [notification dated April 15, 2015] and Tea (Marketing) Control (Second Amendment) Order, 2015, [Notification dated October 1, 2015]. The basic principle of our objection then and now is that since the government can’t guarantee the price realisation and the time taken for sale through auction, it should not intervene and should leave it to the producers to sell their produce in whatever manner producers feel comfortable.”

28/03/2024

The sterling success of Yashasvi Jaiswal and more recently Dhruv Jurel has fuelled Riyan Parag’s hunger to excel, feels Rajasthan Royals head Kumar Sangakkara, who has elevated the cricketer to the crucial number four spot this season.

Riyan Parag, the 22-year-old from Assam, first played for the Rajasthan Royals in 2019. After performing the finisher’s role for the franchise on several occasions, Riyan has been promoted higher up the order considering his improved work ethic and performances in domestic cricket.

The start at the new number was promising as he smashed 43 off 29 balls in Royals’ win over the Lucknow Super Giants in Jaipur on Sunday. Ahead of their second game at home, Sangakkara explained the rationale behind the decision to promote Riyan in the order.

“We looked at how he performed over the years. It is a difficult thing for someone like Riyan who has an overall game to only get the toughest parts of the game, where he has to come in and up the run rate at the death. We all felt he had a much more important role to play for us. The hard work he has done and runs he has scored leading up to the season played a part in that decision,” the Sri Lankan legend said on Wednesday.

“Players have to repay the faith and he has made a great start and needs to keep reading the game well and trusting himself on what he can do at number 4. He is good against pace and spin and that number is ideal for him,” he added.

Talking more about the change he has seen in Parag over the years, said that the biggest change they have seen in him is his maturity and self-awareness.

“What your game is and how your is on and off the field. All of that has changed in Riyan. He is still a very young cricketer and he should not forget that. He has also seen the huge jump Jaiswal and now Jurel have made. He has got the hunger now and an example to follow,” Sangakkara further said.

The Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati (IIT-Guwahati) has successfully transferred a pioneering vaccine technology to BioMed Private Limited, a leading manufacturing company specialising in high-quality vaccines.

This technology entails a recombinant vector vaccine designed specifically for combating the classical swine fever virus in pigs and wild boars, filling a significant gap in India’s vaccine landscape.

This first recombinant virus-based vaccine for pigs harnesses a reverse genetic platform pioneered and refined at IIT Guwahati. Swine fever, a highly contagious disease among pigs, poses a severe threat with a very high mortality rate, although it does not affect humans.

In India, instances of this disease have been frequently observed in Northeast states, as well as in other states including Bihar, Kerala, Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat among others.

The vaccine work was started in 2018-2019 through collaborative efforts between researchers from the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering at IIT Guwahati and the Assam Agricultural University in Guwahati.

This vaccine is being created and produced for the first time in India. The disease poses a significant threat to India’s pig industry, and currently, there is no available vaccine.

Transferring the vaccine technology to one of the leaders in the veterinary vaccine sector marks a remarkable achievement.

Reverse genetics stands as a potent method and tool for the development of vaccines targeting both animal and human diseases.

The technology has been widely used to develop vaccines against influenza.

In an intriguing approach, the researchers have utilised the Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV), traditionally studied for its pathogenicity in chickens, as a carrier for the essential proteins of the classical swine fever virus.

have unveiled a previously unknown species of giant anaconda in the , challenging the preconceived notions about the world's largest snake. With the potential to reach a staggering 26 feet and weighing close to 500 kg, this newfound serpent, named the northern green anaconda (Eunectes akayima), has emerged from the depths of the Ecuadorian Amazon.

Traditionally, the green anaconda held the title of the largest serpent in the world, dominating the tropical realms of South America's river basins. However, a -long study, conducted in collaboration with the indigenous Waorani people and fueled by National Geographic's Disney+ series "Pole to Pole" Will Smith, has now shattered the conventional wisdom.

The scientists delved into the heart of the Baihuaeri Waorani Territory in the Ecuadorian Amazon, documenting the colossal dimensions of the northern green anaconda.

The doesn't merely end with size; genetic studies have unveiled that the green anaconda is not a uniform entity but consists of two distinct species. The northern green anaconda, from its southern counterpart approximately 10 million years ago, stands out with a 5.5% genetic difference, a magnitude that eclipses the genetic gap between humans and chimpanzees.
