Train between India and Sri Lanka The Boat Mail was a combined train and steamer ferry service that operated between India and Sri Lanka from the late 19th century to the 1960s. The train would travel from Chennai to Dhanushkodi, a town on the tip of India's Pamban Island. From there, passengers would board a ferry to Talaimannar, Sri Lanka, where they would connect with another train to Colombo. The service was discontinued in 1964 after a cyclone destroyed the railway tracks at Dhanushkodi. The cyclone made landfall on the night of December 22–23, 1964, at Dhanushkodi. The town was completely destroyed by the storm, which had winds of up to 280 kilometers per hour and a storm surge of up to 7 meters. An estimated 1,800 people were killed in the cyclone, including 200 passengers on the Pamban-Dhanushkodi passenger train, which was overturned by the storm surge. #BoatMail #Dhanushkodi #1964Cyclone #IndiaSriLanka #exploretheworld #instagramtravel #instatravelblog
