| BJP returned to power, securing 46 seats in the 60-member assembly of Arunachal Pradesh. Polling was held in the state on April 19.

While the counting of votes for the two Lok Sabha seats in the northeastern state will take place on June 4, the counting of ballots for the assembly polls in Arunachal Pradesh (and Sikkim) has been preponed as the term of the present assembly ends on June 2.

Although there are 60 members in the state assembly, polling took place only in 50 constituencies as 10 ruling Bharatiya Janata Party candidates, including Chief Minister Pema Khandu and his deputy Chowna Mein, won their seats unopposed.

| On June 2, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Assam will soon have its first Indian Institute of Management (IIM) near Guwahati. Sarma posted on X, "Following our request in 2023, Hon PM Shri ji has given a special gift to the people of Assam by approving an Indian Institute of Management near Guwahati, making it among the few cities to house an IIT, AIIMS, National Law University, and now an IIM."

A letter dated April 10, 2024, from the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Education, PK Banerjee, to the Director of IIM, stated, "I am directed to say that a proposal for the establishment of a new IIM in the State of Assam is under examination....The State Department has agreed to provide a plot of land free of cost and free from all encumbrances in an area with good infrastructure and industrial linkage...."

The letter also mentioned that a plot has been finalized at Marabhita, measuring 574 bigha, 1 katha, 1 lessa, equal to 76.8332 hectares.

IIM Ahmedabad will be the mentor institute for the proposed IIM in Kamrup.

On May 20, 2022, CM Sarma wrote to Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Education and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, requesting the establishment of an IIM in Assam. The letter stated, "...Assam, being the leading state in the region with a sizeable population of over 3.40 crore and being a hub of diverse industrial sectors such as oil, tea, coal, and petrochemical, always feels the lack of a premier management institute of the stature of an IIM."

He added, "...The establishment of an IIM, in addition to the already existing IIT Guwahati, will enable these premier institutions to work in tandem in various fields."

Sarma also sent a letter to the Prime Minister’s Office on April 19, 2023, seeking his intervention in the matter.

|Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai is set to make her acting debut with a cameo appearance in the British TV show 'We Are Lady Parts' season 2.

She shared a first look of her role on X, where she is seen riding a horse and wearing a cowboy hat.

In her post on X, Malala wrote, "Last summer, I agreed to a guest appearance on one of my favourite TV shows, We Are Lady Parts. Please read my interview with about why I wanted to be on the show and why I will continue to speak out for the people of Gaza."

'We Are Lady Parts' season 2, written and directed by Nida Manzoor, follows the story of an all-woman Muslim punk rock band in England trying to make it big. The band makes a song titled ‘Malala Made Me Do It,’ for which she will make her cameo.

In an interview with British Vogue, the 26-year-old activist said she was a fan of the show and had binged the first season in one sitting.

“It was probably the first show I watched where you had Muslim characters who weren’t side characters – you had five of them as the leads. That stood out. It was entertaining. It was funny. I loved it,” Malala added.

Malala, a native of Pakistan, is an education rights activist advocating for girls’ education. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, making her the youngest recipient at 17.

31/05/2024

| The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has relocated over 100 tonnes (1 lakh kilograms) of gold from the United Kingdom to its vaults in India, Business Today reported on Friday (May 31) citing sources.

This marks the first large-scale transfer of gold reserves by India since 1991.

Currently, more than half of the RBI’s gold reserves are held overseas in secure custody with the Bank of England and the Bank of International Settlements, while approximately a third is stored domestically.

According to official data, the RBI held 822.1 tonnes of gold as of March 31, 2024, with 413.8 tonnes stored overseas. The RBI added 27.5 tonnes to its reserves in the last financial year.

“RBI started purchasing gold a few years ago and decided to review its storage locations, which is a periodic practice. As overseas stock was accumulating, it was decided to bring some of the gold to India,” the Times of India quoted an official as saying.

Traditionally, many countries have stored their overseas gold in the Bank of England, and India has used the Bank of England as a repository for some of its gold since before independence.

The move is reportedly expected to help the RBI save on storage costs currently paid to the Bank of England.

In India, the gold is stored in the RBI's old office building on Mumbai's Mint Road and in Nagpur.

“It shows the strength of the economy and confidence, which is in sharp contrast to the situation in 1991,” a source told TOI.
