How many Indian wildlife biologists can you name?
How many Indian women wildlife biologists can you name?
There are several, and their lives and work have been extraordinary.
This is the story of these women and their journeys across the length and breadth of India’s wild spaces – forests, rivers, oceans, mountains – and, more importantly, through the glass ceiling.
Today’s post is about Usha Ganguli- Lachungpa; did you know that a breed of grass collected at the base of Yulhekhacha glacier in the Upper Lacha Chhu valley in Sikkim is named as “Agrostis Ushae” to honour Usha’s sagacity, deep insight into and unabashed love for the ecologically fragile and strategically located Sikkim Himalayas?
@ushalachungpa 's account is beautifully captured by @teresarehman who is an award winning journalist herself, an author and a media educator based out of north east.
Get your hands on the book because who doesn't want to learn more about such inspiring and powerful women :)

As we share more stories from the book “Women in the Wild” The next one is about India’s first female herpetologist, J. Vijaya and her legacy resonates through time.
In a lovely essay penned by Zai Whitaker, we go through the remarkable journey of this young field biologist who transcended boundaries. From the lush forests of India to distant shores abroad, Vijaya’s pursuit of knowledge knew no bounds. Yet, amidst all her adventures, it was the call of the turtles that called her back home.
Through tireless research and unwavering dedication, Vijaya’s work left such an important mark on the scientific community that the species found in the heart of the forests now bears her name - Vijayachelys Silvatica

Her journey from adversity to triumph will leave you inspired and in awe. Jamal Ara’s determination led her through struggles, mastering a new language and exploring the forests of undivided Bihar through the toughest time in her life.
Her dedication to documenting birds catapulted her to becoming “The First Lady of Indian Ornithology”, yet she remained largely unknown, some even mistook her for a man.
Thanks to the extraordinary research work of Raza Kazmi, he got in touch with the only person who could have told this story and how he managed to do that is a story in itself.. After all Delhi is not all concrete; it has pockets of nature reserves that act as city’s lungs. What if I said that Dr. Khudsar and his team have been working tirelessly for the last two decade to expand those lungs by bringing life back to acres of sodic land and are instrumental behind DDA’s and Delhi University’s Bio Diversity Park project.
I had the privilege of meeting him at the Yamuna Bio Diversity Park and I literally could not believe what I saw, the park had a 1.5 km long narrow shallow wet land, lush green three story forest, there were several migratory birds and Nilgai were roaming around freely.
The air was wonderfully clean inside the park, it immediately lifted my mood and brought a huge smile to my face. It was my first time visiting this place and I bet each one of you will be amazed if you visit these bio diversity parks, these are within the borders of Delhi- NCR and very close to human habitation..
What he and his team have been able to achieve is nothing short of a miracle, in-fact on record this kind of transformation hasn’t happened any where in the world.
Here’s your opportunity to know the back story behind the project and learn from a legendary ecologist himself.

Amongst many other things, I had to ask @2akashdas about his unique composition style and how he was able to pioneer habitat shots way back in the 90s.
You must listen to the full episode where he recollects his first journey to Jim Corbett and how not having a zoom lens eventually worked out to be advantageous for him.
In this particular clip he talks about how the subject which may be only 10% is as important at the environment and the animal behaviour.

When I asked @sreedharelephas about the current population of elephants and if the elephant numbers was anything to be concerned about, his response was uniquely pragmatic.
In his view the absolute numbers may be deceptive, it’s only what is revealed when we look deeper into the numbers we can be more assured about the future of the species.
Listen to the full episode for an interesting conversation about elephants where Sreedhar shares his views on demography of the elephants, their sex ratios, adult female to juvenile ratio, inter-birth intervals, other such intriguing phenomenons and much much more..
