How kite-makers in Mumbai's Bainganwadi fight stereotypes and a pandemic to stay relevant.

The pandemic has affected the cottage industry of kite-making. The declining demand due to the lockdown forced many to abandon this craft and find employment elsewhere.

Though it's a male-centric occupation, Sufiya Begum, an 18-year-old accountancy student, helps her father Sayyed Urmay Farma in the business. She is the eldest among five daughters. The family migrated from West Bengal 18 years ago, and are now settled in Bainganwadi in East Mumbai.

Her father started the kite-making business right after they arrived. His unique designs made his kites popular among customers in Mumbai and nearby cities. During the season, the whole family gets involved in making kites to fulfill the demand. The shop is named after one of the daughters, Aliya.

"My father designs the kites. We just help him to make them. The kite-flying season lasts four months—from January to August. August 14 is the last day,” Sufiya Begum said.

Sufiya claims she gets teased by fellow school-mates for the work her family does for survival. A few years back, before they established their reputation in this profession, neighbors and relatives would object to involving daughters and women in the business.

"People call me “ae patang wali (hey kite maker), and ask 'what are you doing here'? At first, I'd get angry and annoyed. Then my father told me if this is your passion, you should go with it. So, I have decided that after my family, I would like to take this up permanently.”

Residents of Ambedkar Nagar in Mumbai's Kurar village have suffered loss of property and sustained injuries in the wake of Cyclone Tauktae. With no livelihood due to the lockdown, they are also struggling to do house repairs and access shelter.

Situated on a hilly slope, Ambedkar Nagar is a victim of neglect by city authorities. The residents were to be rehabilitated by 1999 as per a Bombay High Court order of May 7, 1997. The administration not only dragged its feet on rehabilitation, they failed to provide even basic amenities like water, electricity or transport. On July 1, 2019, rain water broke the boundary wall and swept away 31 people.

Residents are now at the mercy of the approaching Mumbai monsoon with no roof over their heads. While residents and activists appeal to the authorities, Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao Andolan is raising INR 2,50,000 to support at least 50 families to rebuild their homes urgently.

Gurpurab di lakh lakh vadhaiyan 🙏 ✊

1. The government with its policies has forced us to lock our home and march to Delhi. We won't return until all our demands are met.

2. Punjab's farmers, workers, people of all castes will fight these capitalistic policies till our dying breath.

3. We were born out of the soil of freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh and Pash; we know how to fight for our rights.

4. Farmers from various parts of Punjab have come with tractors and other vehicles. They have camped at Singhu border, not being allowed to enter Delhi. There is information that more farmers are planning on joining the protest soon.

5. It's difficult to say what shape the protest will take in the next few days. The farmers are protesting peacefully but the police are using brute force.

6. Many political parties have always tried to portray that farmers of Haryana and Punjab are against each other. While we are eating and protesting under the same sky with peace and unity.

7. The 'Godi media', their social media, IT cell are all trying to portray us in a bad light. But the farmer-leaders of this protest are constantly reminding each other to stay peaceful and not get instigated.

8. Older activists are sharing experiences and stories at the Singhu border. Protesters are building and articulating detailed understanding of the anti-farmer policies and are strengthening the struggle against increasing privatisation by the government

9. Haryana's farmers believe that no matter what turn this protest takes, they will stand by their fellow farmers from Punjab in unity, keeping the protest strong.

On Oct 29, migrant workers were rescued from a jaggery manufacturing unit in Daund, Pune (). Due to intervention by activists from Dalit Adivasi Manch, Hamaal Panchayat, National Campaign Committee for Eradication of Bonded Labour, they received their backwages and reached home safely to Baloda Bazar & Mahasamund districts in Chhattisgarh.

Earlier, in August & September, they came to Pune following a promise of gainful employment that would help them pull out of debts they had to take due to lockdown. What happened was the exact opposite. They were forced into bonded labour via arbitrary debts slapped on them at the factory. Hear workers share their story and current status. Premsagar and 3 other adivasi men had escaped the factory before official rescue fearing for their lives. They have not even received their backwages and came back home further impoverished.

A debt trap forces them to keep working in hopes of earning their back wages. Their unpaid wages are dangled in front of them like the proverbial carrot. Escaping would mean that they would have to forego their rightful wages for which they had worked for.

As per the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976 workers are entitled to receive ‘Release Certificates’ which grants them immediate and long term compensation from the state. The 12 rescued persons were not provided these certificates. Once home, they ended up using their back wages to pay off all their debts.

The police have not filed an FIR against Ultima Agrogenics for bonded labour, child labour, making threats or assault. The workers hence have neither received monetary compensation nor have they got legal justice for the trauma they had been put through for months.

12 persons (including children) from Chattisgarh are being held forcefully at a sugarcane factory in Padvi village, Daund taluka, Pune. Brought here on the pretext of getting good employment, it’s been 2 months since they received any proper wages. Assaulted by the owner this morning, another case of bonded labour from Maharashtra this time. They belong to different dalit & adivasi communities, landless labourers.

The work conditions are appalling - 15 hours, strict monitoring, barely 15 minutes for lunch and beaten up if they reach late to the work site. Women fear sexual assault & want to get out immediately.

From the posters around the factory, it seems to be Ultima Agrogenics ()

Demands:
1. Labour department to initiate bonded labour rescue processes
2. Issue Release Certificates & provide police protection to the victims
3. Police immediately file FIR against the owner & investigate the matter
4. Families to be sent back safely to Chattisgarh & compensated as per the act
5. Report to be sent to Child Welfare Committee (CWC)

Amidst a global pandemic that has significantly impacted daily wage workers, the Supreme Court on August 31 ordered the removal of 48,000 homes on a 70 km stretch of railway tracks in Delhi.

There is no clarity on compensation or rehabilitation by the government yet. While assurances have been made after residents protested, uncertainty over their houses hangs over lakhs of people.

Housing rights activists have deemed the order to be "anti-poor".

An email link has been created with the petition prepared by housing rights activists and Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao, a housing rights organisation, that can be sent out by concerned citizens to stop the demolition and/or provide adequate rehabilitation to those affected.
