Isn't it ironic how our society often needs laws to prompt us to extend kindness to other species? Is it a reflection of our disconnect from the natural world, where empathy should be instinctual, not legislated.
I have often made to feel that feeding a street animal is considered illegal without the proper permits, yet the act itself is simply an expression of compassion. Perhaps it's time to reassess our priorities and renew that innate sense of empathy towards all beings, regardless of species. After all, true kindness knows no boundaries, legal or otherwise. Sure having a law helps to protect our rights, but something as simple as "being kind to another being " needs a law ? Or does the abuse of street and domestic animals need a law that should be renewed from 1950's and enforced upon the community ?

A gentle reminder, please do not overlook the importance of reporting if you feel you are not at a place to handle an injured dog. Thanks to Anwesh who sent us the first video of our streetie Mickey. Unlike the assumptions made that 'it's easy to report and leave', he genuinely was scared he might further injure Mickey and the next best thing to do was to report this to me. Somebody tightly tied a wire across his right paw, sadly no cameras this side to find the culprit and unfortunately we were out of station.
It's easy to SAY we can do it all alone, but sometimes each of us needs to be there for the other, and find ways to support each other for the end cause - "dog's well being". Love to Harsha, Imranuu, Ezra, Ambareesh Anna, Prii, Vibha , Juhi for being there as support for Mickey and us, and trying to find possible ways to help him.
Mickey went into hiding for 2 days. We got back day before night and still couldn't find him, and finally yesterday spotted him and immediately called. I was guiding him throughout the calls & best part was there was no place for ego. He was there exactly for the same cause as us and he brought food, kept talking to him, did not try to catch him fearing he might run away again, reassured him that we will help him. And the moment Mickey met me, I knew he understood that we are all doing this for his welfare. A few minutes into spending with us, he slowly rushed under a parked car and did not want to come out.
Obviously !!! why would he? when this was done by my species itself. Yet, he was ready to entrust upon us, understand we are here for him. Dogs just know 💖
Touchwood after a very long time, Harsha and I were able to secure him and rush him to the clinic. pheww.....
That's it.... that's all we wanted. He is on his way to healing and is admitted in the clinic. Please send him good wishes and also love to all the people who emotionally and physically invested in this, because I firmly believe as p*er animal caretakers, being there for each other for the well being of dogs at the end matters. For nearly 7 years, we've devoted ourselves to caring for street animals, yet it still hurts every single time when we lose a street heart of ours. Our bond with these street dogs, whether years old or newly formed, holds a special place in our hearts —a connection we've rarely experienced with humans.
Do we get to mourn their loss? Do we grieve their absence when we go to the same area to feed the rest of the dogs ? Do we contemplate on quitting feeding ? We dont have answers. What we do know is the immense pain, both physical and emotional, that consumes us. It's a pain that tightens our chest, weighs heavy on our hearts, clouds our minds, and knots our stomachs.
Not being able to call their names or offer one final caress when we return to feed the others is a cruel reminder of the uncertainty that shadows their lives. Today, we said goodbye to Toffee, a friend we'd recently made. She didn't deserve this fate; she didn't ask for it. Our p*er caretakers, never expected to find her lifeless this morning.

We speak about street dog consent and choices quite widely on SDAFT. Dogs are sentient beings, they are individuals who have the choice to say NO. During our feeding rounds we have seen some street dogs choosing touch as their medium to connect to humans, while some are very clear of not wanting touch. This body autonomy needs to be respected. This respect lays the foundation for further interactions with them. They communicate NO in different ways like walking away, turning their head, crouching, tightened body muscles, lip licks, softening of eyes or flinching of body and many more. When their NO is ignored, they are forced to escalate to fear barking, growling, snapping, lunging and eventually biting. They sniff and process the information around them. They are called macrosmatic which means having a highly developed sense of smell while us humans are microsmatic with an underdeveloped sense of smell. Always encourage new dogs to make the first move. Let them approach you and not the other way around. This way, the dog gets a choice here to decide if they should approach you or not. When they have this freedom to make the right choice they will come to you and sniff you. When they sniff you, they will get to know you much better. And when they have given you a good sniff, ensure they still have the freedom to walk away and leave. So let the dogs make the first move. Like this video?
