Rainfall Lashes Plains in J&K, Snowfall in Higher Reaches
Srinagar, Apr 14: The past 24 hours witnessed widespread rainfall across the plains in Jammu and Kashmir, while higher reaches have received snowfall on Sunday, officials said here.
An official said that the region experienced light to moderate rainfall across most areas, coupled with light snowfall in higher reaches, including Gurez valley over the past 24 hours.
The MeT forecast indicates a continuation of cloudy conditions with the likelihood of light to moderate rain and snowfall in higher elevations for the next few days. Specifically, from April 14th to 15th, the region is expected to witness widespread rainfall, with the possibility of heavy rain, thunder, lightning, and gusty winds at isolated locations.
"Farmers in the area are advised to suspend farm operations until April 16th to mitigate any potential damage due to the inclement weather. Also, temporary disruptions in surface transportation are anticipated over certain higher reaches during April 14th and 15th," the Met said
"Tourists and travelers are urged to plan their journeys accordingly, considering the forecasted weather conditions. Temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas is expected, and there is a heightened risk of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones, necessitating caution and preparedness from residents and authorities alike," it said
From April 16th onwards, the weather pattern is predicted to transition to partly to generally cloudy skies with isolated instances of light rain and snowfall in higher altitudes. However, from April 18th to 19th, the region may experience cloudy weather with light rain and snowfall in many areas, accompanied by thunder and lightning.
"From April 20th to 24th, the forecast suggests generally dry weather, although the possibility of afternoon and nighttime thundershower activity can not be ruled out," it added.
Booms and sirens in Israel after Iran launches over 200 missiles and drones in unprecedented attack
Jerusalem, Apr 14 (AP) Booms and air raid sirens sounded across Israel early on Sunday after Iran launched hundreds of drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles in an unprecedented revenge mission that pushed the Middle East closer to a regionwide war. In Washington, President Joe Biden said US forces helped Israel down “nearly all” of the drones and missiles and pledged to convene allies to develop a unified response.
The Iranian attack, less than two weeks after a suspected Israeli strike in Syria that killed two Iranian generals in an Iranian consular building, marked the first time it has launched a direct military assault on Israel, despite decades of enmity dating back to the country's 1979 Islamic Revolution. Condemnation from the United Nations chief and others was swift, with France saying Iran “is risking a potential military escalation,” Britain calling the attack “reckless" and Germany saying Iran and its proxies “must stop it immediately."
The Israeli military's spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said Iran fired scores of drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles — with the vast majority intercepted outside Israel's borders. He said warplanes intercepted over 10 cruise missiles alone, also outside Israeli airspace.
Hagari said a handful of missiles landed in Israel. Rescuers said a 7-year-old girl in a Bedouin Arab town was seriously wounded in southern Israel, apparently in a missile strike, though they said police were still investigating the circumstances of her injuries. Hagari said a missile struck an army base, causing light damage but no injuries.
"A wide-scale attack by Iran is a major escalation,” he said. Asked whether Israel would respond, Hagari said only that the army “does and will do whatever is required to protect the security of the state of Israel.” He said the incident was not over, and dozens of Isra

#Leopard Spotted in Bandipora's Gunddachina Village, Wildlife Dept Mobilises Teams
Suhail Rather
Bandipora April 13: After reports emerged on social media regarding leopard sightings in Gunddachina Village of Bandipora, the Jammu and Kashmir wildlife department officially confirmed the animal’s presence in the area on Saturday.
An officer said that they have received “Photo evidence” of the leopard’s presence in the Gunddachina village of Bandipora.
“People must be careful from now onwards. Children should not be allowed to move out, especially during morning and evening hours, and during the Fajar and Esha prayers, people should go in groups with sufficient lights,” the official warned.
The official further said that teams have been dispatched and cages are being installed at multiple locations in the area.
The official added that there is a high possibility that only one leopard is roaming in the area.
Meanwhile, residents of these areas are in a state of panic and have refrained themselves and their children from venturing out in the area.
Mian Altaf dispels rumours about dropping out of race from Anantnag Rajouri LS seat
Srinagar, Apr 13: National Conference candidate from Anantnag-Rajouri Parliamentary constituency Mian Altaf Ahmad Saturday dispelled rumours about him not contesting the Lok Sabha elections, saying while he was unwell earlier, his health has now improved and he looks forward to fight the polls.
"Since before Eid, I had a fever and underwent some tests. The doctors thought I had jaundice and advised me complete rest, which I could not do. I took medicine but did not feel better. Then I underwent some more tests and was diagonised with viral fever," Ahmad said in a video statement released here.
The influential Gujjar leader said he had told those who came to meet him at his Baba Nagri residence in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district that it would be difficult for him to campaign or contest elections if his health did not improve.
"I took the treatment for the viral fever, and today, I am feeling better," he added.
Ahmad, a former minister, said there was no truth in the rumours being spread about him not contesting the polls.
"There is nothing like that. If my health did not get better, then definitely, I would have told the party to find an alternate candidate ... My candidature already stands declared and I will contest," he said.
His statement came after NC vice president Omar Abdullah and other party leaders went to Baba Nagri to inquire about his health.
"Omar came here, but he only came to check on my health, there was no political discussion. I told him there was no need for him to come here," he said.
Earlier, at a function at party headquarters Nawa-i-Subha, Abdullah told reporters that the party had not heard from Ahmad about him dropping out of the race.
"We have not heard about it. If he had taken such a decision, then he would have informed us. Now that you have raised it, we will find out about it," Abdullah said.
The NC leader said Ahmad is the party's first

Hurriyat Conference condemns 'restrictions on religious observances
Srinagar, Apr 12: Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday condemned "restrictions on religious observances" in Jammu and Kashmir after the authorities barred the congregational prayers on Jumatul Vida and Eid at the Jamia Masjid here.
Addressing the congregation at the Jamia Masjid, Farooq, who is also the chief priest, criticised the authorities' decision to "prohibit observances of key religious events, including Jumatul Vida (the last Friday of Ramzan), Shab-e-Qadr, and Eid prayers at the grand mosque".
"Every time the mosque is locked down and I am detained at home, their claims get exposed," he said in a statement. (PTI)
