State Senior Badminton Ranking Tournament: Arunesh, Nishant, Rahul, Sushil Enter Semis

NAVELIM: A major upset in the Men’s Singles category set the tone for the GBA State Badminton Ranking Tournament for Seniors (Men and Women), underway at the Manohar Parrikar Indoor Stadium, Navelim. Young rising sub-junior talent Advait Balakrishnan defeated Goa’s top-ranked player from last season, Ayaan Shaikh, with a score of 21-19, 21-13 to mark a major upset in the pre quarters. Later during the day, in Men’s Singles quarter-finals, top-seeded Arunesh Hari defeated Arjun Bhagat 21-15, 21-7. Nishant Shenai, seeded fourth, secured a win against Anuj Vernekar with a decisive 21-7, 21-5 victory. Sixth seed Rahul Deswal overcame third-seed Karan Dhavaskar 21-10, 21-18, while Sushil Nayak defeated Advait Balakrishnan in a thrilling match that ended 21-19, 12-21, 21-18.

The Men’s Doubles quarter-finals also showcased dominant performances. Top-seeded duo Arjun Fallary and Tejan Fallary triumphed over Abhishek Swami and Sadiq Attar with a score of 21-12, 21-13. The fourth-seeded pair Aryaman Saraf and Suraj Lama defeated Chinmay Kamat and Divyesh Shirsat 21-11, 21-15. Second seeds Floyd Araujo and Fredrick Fernandes overcame Kewal Sawant and Krishnaraj Gauns 21-12, 21-16, while Advait Balakrishnan and Parteek Mahajan won against Ashmeet Parsekar and Parth Joshi 21-18, 21-16 in a closely fought match.

In the Mixed Doubles category, top-seeded Tejan Fallary and Lydia Barreto defeated Sadiq Attar and Tabbasum Shaikh 21-15, 21-8. Fourth seeds Mrunal Bhatkande and Minoshka Pereira overcame Ashmeet Parsekar and Shreya Mehta in a closely contested match, ending 21-14, 16-21, 21-12. Arunesh H and Sufiya Shaikh defeated Advait Balakrishnan and Ritika Chelluri with a score of 21-6, 21-13, while second seeds Aryaman Saraf and Yasmin Sayed triumphed over Chirag Mahale and Janhavi Virnodkar 21-19, 21-12.
The tournament organised by Goa Badminton Association is co-hosted by Goa Sports Club and Chicalim Badminton Club. Results:

YMCA Major Ranking TT: Pradnya poised for triple crown; sets up clash with Ish*ta, Anushri, Urvi



PANAJI: YMCA All Goa Major Ranking Table Tennis tournament, held at the Indoor Stadium in Campal, Panaji, under the aegis of the Goa Table Tennis Association, has reached a thrilling climax with Pradnya Caro setting herself up for a potential triple crown. After a series of intense matches, the semi-final results have set the stage for exciting finals in multiple categories.



The U17 Girls Semis saw Pradnya Caro demonstrating excellent form by defeating Riya Gopi 3-1, and Ish*ta Colaso maintaining a dominant performance with a fine 3-0 victory over Sanisha Sinha. This sets up a highly anticipated final between Pradnya Caro and Ish*ta Colaso who too will be eyeing a triple, having previously reached finals in U13 and U15 Girls singles. The U19 Girls Semis featured Anushri Naik defeating Ish*ta Colaso 3-1 and Pradnya Caro winning a tight match against Urvi Surlakar 3-2. The final will see Anushri Naik face Pradnya Caro in another thrilling encounter. The Women’s Semis saw Pradnya Caro overcoming Neeza Kamat 3-2 and Urvi Surlakar defeating Ish*ta Colaso 3-1. The final will be a clash between Pradnya Caro and Urvi Surlakar.



In the Veterans Doubles Semis, Deepak Gopani and Prashant Kaisare defeated Sachin Soares and Yusuf Shaikh 3-1, while Ratnadeep Shivani and Shawn Soares narrowly overcame Noel Estibeiro and Neeraj Kannure 3-2. In the Para Standing Semis, Alex Albuquerque defeated Gopal Naik 3-0, and Ritesh Vaigankar triumphed over Vinayak Mahindrakar 3-1. In the Para WheelChair Semis, Lloyd Fernandes secured a 3-0 victory over Stany D’Souza, and Moises Rodrigues won against Vishant Nagvekar 3-1. The finals will be held on Sunday, 3pm onwards at Campal.

Rajtilak Naik wins third term as GUJ president

PANAJI: Rajtilak Naik was elected president of the Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ) for the third consecutive term during the Annual General Meeting and elections to the GUJ executive committee for 2024-2026 held on June 29, 2024, at the GUJ office in Panaji on Saturday.

Rajtilak secured 135 votes while his opponent Avit Bagle secured 53 votes in the results declared by the returning officer Waman Prabhu. A total of 196 voters out of 226 eligible voters exercised their franchise giving a voting percentage of 86.72. Three votes were declared invalid.

Rajtilak is working as an Assistant Photo Editor with the Goa edition of The Times of India.

Ten members of the GUJ executive committee were elected as follows:

State Senior Badminton Ranking Tournament: Vivaan, Abhishek, Yash, Advait Surge Ahead



NAVELIM: Badminton Association’s State Badminton Ranking Tournament for Seniors (Men and Women) commenced at the Multipurpose Stadium, Navelim, featuring the categories of Men and Women in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. The three day event, co hosted by Goa Sports Club and Chicalim Badminton Club, is one of the Selection tournaments for the West Zone and Nationals.



In the Men’s Singles category, Vivaan Kamat, Abhishek Swami, Yash Desai, and Advait Balakrishnan emerged victorious in their final round matches, securing their places in the Pre-Quarterfinals. Joining them in the Round of 16 are Sahil Sayed, Yousuf Shaikh, Floyd Araujo, and Soham Mandrekar, showcasing their skill and determination on the court.



The Men’s Doubles matches were equally thrilling, with pairs Ashmeet Parsekar/Parth Joshi, Abhishek Swami/Sadiq Attar, Ayush Kamal/Chirag Mahale, Karan Dhavaskar/Rahul Deswal, Anuj Vernekar/Mrunal Bhatkande, and Advait Balakrishnan/Parteek Mahajan sealing their berths in the Pre-Quarterfinals.

YMCA Major Ranking TT: Rishan Upsets Arvind, Sets Up Men's Title Clash with Anshuman

PANAJI: YMCA All Goa Major Ranking Table Tennis Tournament, held at the Indoor Stadium in Campal, Panaji, saw an exciting turn of events as young Peddem based upcoming paddler Rishan Shaikh upset Arvind Kumar, Goa's top seed from the previous season, to set up a highly anticipated title clash in Men's singles with Anshuman Agarwal, a former National medalist.

Rishan Shaikh, who had previously reached the finals in the Boys U15 category, showcased his talent, temperament and determination. His victory over Arvind Kumar, a seasoned player, has set the stage for an electrifying final where he will vie for a double crown.

The tournament also witnessed commendable performances from Noel Estibeiro, Reagan Pinto, Vaidik Srivastava, Chandan Caro, Niraj Kannure, Kewal Tamhankar, and Pranav Naik in the pre-quarterfinals. Unfortunately, top seed Aaron Farias had to give a walkover due to health issues. The final match between Anshuman Agarwal and Rishan Shaikh promises to be a thrilling encounter and will be played on Sunday afternoon session at Campal.

PANAJI: The YMCA All Goa Major Ranking Table Tennis Tournament, held at the Indoor Stadium in Campal, Panaji, witnessed an exciting display of young talent in the Junior Boys section, culminating in a thrilling showdown between Aaron Farias and Chandan Caro in both the Boys U17 and U19 categories. Aaron Farias and Chandan Caro emerged as the standout players of the day, showcasing their skills and determination to reach the finals. Chandan Caro's remarkable performance had previously resulted in him reaching the finals in the Boys U15 category, marking his third finals appearance in the tournament.

The road to the finals was paved with intense matches. In the Boys U17 quarters, Aaron Farias defeated Darren Duarte 3-0, while Rishan Shaikh overcame Surendra Chube with the same score. Atharv Dhulapkar edged out Khushal Naik 3-2 in a closely contested match, and Chandan Caro triumphed over Chinmay Bhakare 3-0. Indo-Iranian Film Festival: Support initiatives that celebrate diversity, says Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant

SANKHALI: State Commission for Persons with Disabilities, in association with the Department for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Government of Goa, Cultural House of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and We Care Festival proudly presented the Indo-Iranian Film Festival on Disability Issues.

The second day of the festival was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Goa, Dr. Pramod Sawant, at Sankhali. The event was graced by the presence of Premendra Shet, MLA, Mayem Constituency; Guruprasad Pawaskar, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Varsha Naik, Director of DEPWD, Satish Kapoor, Founding President of We Care Film Festival and Mahanand Satarkar, a filmmaker from Goa. The dignitaries highlighted the significance of the festival in promoting inclusivity and awareness through the medium of film.

Chief Minister Of Goa , Dr. Pramod Sawant expressed: “The Indo-Iran Film Festival not only showcases outstanding cinema but also highlights the resilience and stories of individuals with disabilities, promoting empathy and understanding in our society. As we immerse ourselves in the rich tapestry of films presented here, let us reflect on how cinema can inspire us to break barriers and foster a more inclusive community. Let us continue to support initiatives that celebrate diversity and empower persons with disabilities.”

The State Minister of Social Welfare of Goa, Subhash Phaldessai emphasised the importance of such initiatives, as he stated “Persons with disabilities deserve the right to equality, right to education, and all the rights that normal persons get. In whatever way we could assist them, we should; they should live a dignified life, and there should be no differentiation. Don’t just help them for the time being, but take that as your responsibility. These kinds of film festival initiatives are to create awareness. The teachers who have brought their students here, the students will have the impact of the films on their minds for a long, long time. And the students should consider themselves lucky and fortunate that they have witnessed this at this age. You will be ambassadors and pillars in the future.”

The festival commenced on June 26th in Panjim, continued today, June 27th, in Sankhali, and will conclude tomorrow, June 28th, in Margao. The theme of the Purple Fest 2024 was also played during the inaugural. Additionally, one of the films from the list, “Fish and Eye,” was also played during the inaugural in the presence of the dignitaries, followed by an interactive session with the students about the messages and learnings they gained from the movie.

The state Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Goa Guruprasad Pawaskar added, “The movie screenings are done to ensure that proper sensitisation is there across the state. We have to create that kind of inclusive environment to ensure that persons and students with disabilities have equal opportunities and should not be treated unequally, they are one of us and we should be proud of that.”

The festival featured wide-ranging mix of films that highlight the challenges and triumphs of individuals with disabilities. Among the notable screenings were “The Fish” by Babak, “The Feet in the Sand," "Son of Sun" by Rad Pourjabbar, “I’m Enough” by Rachna Prasad, “Fayaz,” “I’m a Man” by Amin Ali Shahsavari, “I Won’t Remain” by Yaser Talebi, “The Silent Epidemic” by Akshat Gupta, “The Raid” by Pooria Soleimani, and “Saksham Lok” by Ayush Nagpal. These films collectively narrated stories of resilience, creativity, and the human spirit.

SAMEER KAKODKAR ELECTED PRESIDENT OF GOA STATE TENNIS ASSOCIATION

The newly-elected committee of the Goa State Tennis Association (GSTA) is poised to lead the association into a new era of growth and development by enhancing infrastructure and facilities for tennis players across the state, organising state-level and national-level tournaments to foster competitive spirit and implementing training programmes to nurture young talent.

Running for a Cause: Registrations Open for Rotary Rain Run Goa 2024

PANAJI: Registrations have opened for the Rotary Rain Run Goa 2024, which is all set to hold its annual run-for-a-cause marathons during the monsoon season’s peak. Applications can be submitted across categories namely the two km fun walk, five km dream run and 10 km and 21 km timed runs.Registrations for the event will close on July 20.

The charity event, which celebrates its 10th edition this year on 28th July, continues its tradition of promoting healthy practices and supporting Women’s Health and Education, with a focus on free cancer detection through the Rotary Club of Porvorim (RCP)’s Prakash Cancer Aid Project.

This year, Rotary Rain Run Goa is introducing a Seniority Walk of two km for the age category of 50 years and above facilitated by Manasum Luxury Senior Living.

“We are excited to announce that registrations have opened for the upcoming Rotary Rain Run Goa 2024. We are overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and interest from participants and can't wait to see everyone there! We hope first-time marathoners and experienced distance runners will sign up for this incredibly important charitable event,” said Avinash Singh Parmar, chairman and spokesperson of Rotary Rain Run Goa 2024.

World-renowned runners like four-time IRONMAN Triathlon completionist Corina Van Dam from the Netherlands, IRONMAN Triathlon completionist and five-time Guinness world record holder Preeti Maske and double Guinness world record holder for fastest marathons in a sari and a traditional Welsh dress Kranti Salvi, will be participating in the event this year.

The Rotary Rain Run 2024 will commence at the SAG Athletics Stadium, Bambolim, with a turn-around at the Miramar Circle for the 21 km timed run. The scenic course will run through the sea-facing roads of Bambolim and Dona Paula, giving runners a view of notable landmarks on their journey to the finish line.

ESG Cinephile Club to screen Hollywood classic 'Gaslight' on Thursday

PANAJI: ESG's Cinephile Club will host the screening of the Hollywood classic, 'Gaslight' (English, 1hr 52 mins), starring Ingrid Bergman, Charles Boyer, and Joesph Cotton; on Thursday, 27th June at Maquinez Palace here at 6.30 pm.

Directed by George Cukor, who went on to make A Star is Born and My Fair Lady, the modern-day term 'gaslighting' comes from this film (which itself was inspired by a play). Ingrid Bergman in an Oscar-winning performance plays a young wife whose husband (Charles Boyer) manipulates her into believing she is going insane.

Over 30 saplings were distributed to locals for home planting. YMCA Major Ranking TT – Chandan poised for double, Yug, Kavish, Dhruva, Rishan in finals

PANAJI: The YMCA All Goa Major Ranking Table Tennis Tournament, organized in collaboration with the Goa Table Tennis Association, kicked off at the Indoor Stadium, Campal, Panaji with an exciting display of skill and excitement in the Boys' U11, U13, and U15 categories. The opening day saw fierce battles as young talents competed for a spot in the finals. Chandan Caro emerged as a standout performer, advancing to the finals in both the U13 and U15 categories.

In the U11 Boys category, the quarterfinals saw Yug Prabhu defeat Ashank Dalvi 3-0, Vihang Jotkar overcome Shreysht Rane 3-0, Ishaan Colaso win against Kris Silveira 3-0, and Kavish Dalvi edge out Yuvaan Sanke 3-2. The semifinals had Yug Prabhu defeating Vihang Jotkar 3-0 and Kavish Dalvi winning against Ishaan Colaso 3-2, setting up a thrilling final between Yug Prabhu and Kavish Dalvi.
