CONTROVERSY OVER EXTREME TEMPERATURES IN NAGPUR: IMD CLARIFIES AWS MALFUNCTION

Two automatic weather stations (AWS) in Nagpur, India, seemingly recorded scorching temperatures of 54 and 56 degrees Celsius on Thursday. However, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has stepped in to clarify that these readings were erroneous, attributed to sensor malfunctions. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Nagpur, the official maximum temperature recorded on May 30th was 44 degrees Celsius, as confirmed by the functioning AWS at CICR, Nagpur. The discrepancy arose from the malfunctioning AWS located within PDKV's agricultural land. This incident echoes previous disputes over temperature records, notably when a weather station in Delhi reported a staggering 52.9 degrees Celsius, later attributed to sensor errors or local factors by IMD officials. The severity of the heatwave in North India has led to unfortunate casualties, with twelve deaths suspected due to heat stroke in Odisha's Sundargarh within 24 hours. Additionally, concerns over water scarcity escalate, with the water levels in the nation's primary reservoirs dwindling to 23%, as reported by the Central Water Commission (CWC).Despite the controversy, Nagpur continued to experience sweltering conditions, recording a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius on Friday, persisting above the seasonal average.

AC BLAST IN NOIDA; FIRE OFFICIAL URGES CAUTION

A fire incident occurred in a flat in Noida's Lotus Boulevard society, Sector 100, early on May 30, reportedly caused by an air conditioner blast. Chief Fire Officer Pradeep Kumar Choubey stated that the fire was contained in one room due to the functioning firefighting systems. The incident highlights the importance of air conditioner (AC) safety, especially as North India experiences soaring temperatures. While AC fires are rare, they can occur. To prevent such incidents, it is crucial to follow safety measures. Experts advise residents to regularly check their air conditioners for potential faults, especially given how AC short circuits or blasts can be a common catalyst for such accidents. Ensuring proper installation and periodic maintenance of electrical appliances, using surge protectors, and avoiding overloads on power outlets are crucial steps to mitigate such risks.
