This amazing piece needs no introduction, the mighty 1176. The ultra-fast attack time – a startling 20 µs made this machine shine infront of many famous compressors. It offers no threshold control – just input and output dials, with the amount of compression decided by the input level.

When it comes to the Sound, the 1176 Peak Limiter can be many things, but it is probably best known for the energy and the professional sound, a musically-pleasing pushing of the tone in the lower mids. For grabbing vocals and placing them at the front of the mix it’s near impassable. But it’ll also work on just about anything else, from kicks, snares and claps through to synths and even full drum sub-mixes.

All of the design characteristics of the Fairchild were conceived for maximum level control and minimum colouration, its development took place in an era when pretty much all engineers tried their best to record sources as naturally and pristine-sounding as was possible. Compressors and equalisers were almost universally viewed as tools to help an engineer achieve the clearest, most natural-sounding results, rather than as the ‘colour’ processors or ‘groove tools’ that are in vogue today.

I would recommend to try this amazing compressor if you are looking for a natural sound rather than adding saturation on to the original signal.
