ICAR to Host Indian Orchid Festival 2025: A Platform for Experts and Enthusiasts

Pakyong, February 02 (IPR): The ICAR-National Research Centre for Orchids, located in Pakyong, Sikkim, has announced the forthcoming INDIAN ORCHID FESTIVAL 2025. This event is slated to occur from March 1 to March 4, 2025, at the ICAR-National Research Centre for Orchids, Dikling/Airport Road in Pakyong. This year's festival is set to celebrate the diversity and beauty of orchids, attracting enthusiasts, horticulturists, scientists, and nature aficionados from across the nation.

Among the primary attractions of the festival will be an engaging Orchid Show and Competition, providing participants with a distinguished opportunity to present their finest orchid specimens. Soreng, February 02: The Winter Sports Coaching Camp in Boxing and Badminton, organized by the Sports and Youth Affairs Department of the Government of Sikkim, wrapped up today after running from 17th Jan 2025 to 2nd February 2025 at the Indoor Gymnasium Hall in Soreng, Jautar.

The closing ceremony began with the traditional offering of khadas to the Chief Guest and Special Guests, followed by a welcome address and a brief report on the camp by Mamita Gurung, Deputy Director of SYA, Soreng District. The event was graced by SDM Soreng, Shri Sunny Kharel, who served as the Chief Guest, along with other distinguished attendees, including Shri Gayas Pega (ADC Development), Shri Amber Gurung (President and members of the SBA), Shri Bhusan Dahal (Government Contractor), and staff members of the SYA Department in Soreng District.

In his address, the Chief Guest highlighted the importance of sports in human life. Trainees in both badminton and boxing showcased their talent in front of the gathering. The program emphasized the camp’s objectives and achievements, providing a valuable platform for local talent, particularly in boxing and badminton.

The event concluded with the distribution of tokens of appreciation to the Chief Guest and other honored guests, along with certificates to all trainees. T-shirts were also gifted to the best students from each discipline: Asya Pardhan and Heemsaymee S***a for boxing, and Yashaswi Bhandari and Rinchen Lhadup Lepcha for badminton.

The 15-day training programme on digital marketing and business management for homestay owners, organized by the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department of Sikkim, in joint collaboration with the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM), Sajong, under the Sikkim Inspires initiative, successfully concluded on Friday, January 31.2025.

He stated that visitors from across the world are drawn to the rural beauty of Sikkim, and homestays not only contribute to economic growth but also facilitate cross-cultural exchange. He encouraged more locals to take up homestay ventures as a means of sustainable tourism development.

The program highlighted the need for continuous learning and skill development, particularly among women and youth, to strengthen the state’s tourism and hospitality sector.

As part of the concluding ceremony, participants' feedback were collected to assess the impact of the event. Namchi, January 31 (IPR): An awareness programme on menstrual hygiene and distribution of sanitary pad under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao was organised by Women, Child, Senior Citizen, and Person with Disabilities Welfare Development Department at Namthang Block Administrative Centre (BAC), today.

The program had the presence of Mr Praveen Gautam SDM Namthang, as a chief guest. He was accompanied by Mr Laxman Tamang CDPO, Namchi, Ms Sophia Lepcha Nodal Officer BBBP cm AD Nutrition, Mr J B Rai Community Health Officer, Mr Mahendra Timsina Deputy Director BAC, Namthang, Ms Jerelina Lepcha Supervisor BAC Namthang, Ms Sangita Gurung Centre Admin, One Stop Centre, along with member of HUB, Anganwadi, ICDs and adolescent girl children.

In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao," the Namchi District has, for the first time, publicised the 24-hour Child Helpline number 1098 and the Women Helpline number 181 under the Namthang sub-division.

Mr. Praveen Gautam SDM Namthang, commended the department for its various initiatives and programs implemented over the past decade as part of the BBBP campaign. Following his remarks, he distributed sanitary pads to the adolescent girls in attendance at the event.

Furthermore, he emphasised the importance of nutrition and physical activity in maintaining menstrual health. He urged women to incorporate iron-rich foods into their diets to offset the blood loss experienced during menstruation. Additionally, he recommended the inclusion of fruits, nuts, and seeds to enhance overall energy and immunity.

Moreover, he encouraged all participants to engage in the Sensitization program to raise awareness among their families and friends, promoting healthier lifestyles. He also expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Anganwadi workers in conducting door-to-door public awareness initiatives.

Mr Laxman Tamang CDPO, Namchi in his speech talked about the vital objectives of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme, which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015, which aims to protect and educate the girl child, focusing on improving their health, nutrition, and safety.

Additionally he added that BBBP was introduced to combat gender based discrimination, improve the declining s*x ratio, and ensure the safety and education of girls child.

Futhermore, he emphasised the need for a balanced diet, proper healthcare, and quality education for girls. Further he also talked about the critical role of physical and emotional health in the development of a girl child.

Mr J B Rai CHO, in his addresses, emphasised the significance of personal health and hygiene awareness during the teenage years. He highlighted the necessity for women and girls to implement appropriate menstrual hygiene practices to protect their health and well-being, noting that neglecting this issue could lead to long-term, concealed, and potentially serious health problems for women in the future.

Furthermore, he discussed the sensitization program conducted for teenage girls in observance of Menstrual Hygiene Day, which takes place on May 28.

Ms Sangita Gurung Centre Admin, One Stop Centre Jorethang, addressed the children to enlighten them about the establishment of the One Stop Center (OSC) in 2017 under the Women and Child Development Department, to provide 24-hour support to women, including police assistance, medical care, a five-day emergency shelter, psychosocial counselling, and legal aid.

In her address, she also discussed the issues of teenage pregnancy and underage marriages, emphasising that even if a marriage occurs with the woman's consent, if she is under 18 years of age, the husband will face legal consequences.

Moreover, she urged everyone to utilise the emergency helpline numbers, highlighting that these services not only provide immediate assistance but also inform the public about various government schemes aimed at empowering women and other valuable resources.

Soreng, January 30: The Agriculture Department Soreng District organised an Awareness and Distribution Programme of “Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY)-PDMC 2024-2025 Phase II Under Zoom Cluster” to sensitise the farmers on Micro Irrigation systems and encourage them to adopt modern irrigation systems as a means of diversifying and improving their farm lands. The farmers were the main highlight of the programme with the main goal of making them aware of the utility and benefits of modern irrigation systems and their application in year-round farming.

The occasion was graced by Honourable MLA Salghari Zoom Constituency cm Advisor, Transport and Skill Development Department, Mr Madan Cintury as a Chief Guest and spoke about the importance of agriculture and irrigated farming while also encouraging the farmers who were present there to make the optimum use of the facilities provided. He briefed the farmers on the various ways they could ensure optimum water use efficiency in their farms through the use of micro irrigation systems installed in their Farms. Farm School on Pea Production Started at Okhrey GPU

Soreng, January 29: ATMA (Agricultural Technology Management Agency), Daramdin Block, Soreng District under Agriculture Department initiated a Farm School on Pea Production, Variety- HYV-ADVANTA GS 10 at Okhrey in the presence of Panchayat Zilla member Mr P. Dorjee Sherpa, Panchayat President Mr Lakpa Norbu Sherpa, Deputy Project Director ATMA Mr Manish Pradhan and staffs and field functionaries of Agriculture Department Okhrey GPU along with 24 numbers of farmers.

Keeping view with the initiative that no cultivable land should remain fallow in Rural Areas. An area around 0.5 ha. Land at Okhrey GPU which remained uncultivated fallow land for the last 4 years has been ploughed and a farm school on pea production was established by ATMA, Soreng district, Daramdin block with the active participation of Okhrey GPU Agriculture staffs. Farm School is a Front-Line Demonstration which targets 24 surrounding farmers on technical knowledge including the process from sowing to harvesting for Pea Crop in an innovative method for a cropping season. Deputy Project Director ATMA Mr Manish Pradhan gave a brief insight about the working and farmers oriented programme carried out by ATMA in the District.

Zilla Member P. Dorjee Sherpa and Panchayat President Mr Lakpa Norbu Sherpa also highlighted on importance of active involvement of local farmers, Gram Panchayat, and Government employees in coming days in such initiatives taken by the Department. Farmers Empowered to Boost Organic Honey and Turmeric Production at Pakyong

Pakyong, January 29 (IPR): A training cm distribution programme on beekeeping was jointly organised by Agriculture & Horticulture Department Pakyong, ICAR-NRC Orchids, ICAR-KVK East & Cipla Foundation at Rurban Complex, Pakyong today.

The initiative is carried out under the chairmanship of District Collector Pakyong to popularise organic honey and turmeric in the state.

Addressing the gathering, Mr Tshering Chophel Bhutia, Additional Director, Agriculture and Horticulture Department, stressed focusing on the purity of honey and utilising the resources to improve the honey production in a sustainable manner. He then underlined the importance of the Madhukranti Portal, which allows bee farmers to register under various categories so that the authorities have a database about the authenticity of the honey produced. In addition, he also informed on the importance of achieving FSSAI certification, quality checks and organic certification for FPOs before showcasing the items in the market.

Furthermore, he outlined various market and business strategies to elevate the livelihoods of farmers while assuring to provide assistance through collaborative efforts and popularise organic honey and turmeric in the state.

Ms Rebecca Gurung, Deputy Director, Agriculture Department, emphasised the organic products of the state by focusing on honey and turmeric production. She advised adopting the new practices of farming for better cultivation, further emphasising the importance of soil fertility in the agricultural process.

She then stressed the demand for the honey processing sector around the globe, advising the farmers to focus on equipping themselves with the knowledge and resources provided for the production of high-quality items, work towards economic upliftment and be self-reliant.

Likewise, Dr Kalaivanan, Senior Scientist, ICAR-NRC, provided an update on the turmeric sampling and testing process to recognise the best variety for the production contributing towards the agricultural upliftment of the region.

Dr Boniface Lepcha, SMS ICAR-KVK, shared details on the turmeric training programmes designed to cultivate high-quality turmeric, elevate the standards of production and foster collaboration among farmers to enhance their turmeric cultivation practices. He then informed that through the guidance, farmers would be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to improve their outputs, which would help them meet the growing demand for premium turmeric and honey production in the market.

Dr Smruti Ranjan, SMS ICAR-KVK, discussed the integration of honeybee components within the framework of the Integrated Farming System (IFS). He underlined the importance of enhancing crop productivity while encouraging the farmers to improve their livelihoods through such practices.

Furthermore, Mr Khem Kr Bhattarai, Resource Person for Beekeeping, provided insights on the practices of bee management, bee science and maintenance of the colonies of the honeybees. He then advocated the gathering on branding honey products, building customer satisfaction, quality of the product and optimising the process of honey extraction.

Additionally, he also underscored the importance of protecting the bees and shared essential understanding and skills to flourish in the sector, further empowering them to embrace their role in fostering a sustainable beekeeping industry.
The day also witnessed the participation of 325 farmers along with the distribution of beekeeping boxes.

Also present were Ms Hissey Choden Bhutia, Deputy Director, Horticulture Department, along with officials from various line departments.

The event was graced by Mr SR S***a, President of Sikkim Akademi, who served as the Chief Guest. The Valedictory Ceremony also had the presence of Mr Basant Kumar Lama, Secretary Culture Department, Mr PL Sharma, Secretary (Adm) Sikkim Akademi, as well as the Resource Persons of the workshop, officers, and staff from the department.

This workshop was conducted by the Department from September 24 to October 31, 2024, with the objective of providing training to newly recruited artists in the folk songs and dances of the Lepcha, Bhutia, and Nepali communities. This initiative forms part of the commemoration of fifty years of statehood.

During his address, the Chief Guest commenced by extending his congratulations to Mr Naren Gurung, Padmashri Designate, for his noteworthy achievements. He also offered his congratulations to the award winners and all participants of the workshop. He articulated a profound appreciation for folk culture, praising the department as a vital institution that preserves the rich traditions of Sikkim. He noted that the department has successfully cultivated talent across various fields.

In his closing remarks, the Chief Guest urged all attendees to strive for excellence in their endeavours, emphasising the importance of individual contributions to the advancement of the state.

The programme featured Mr Norden Lepcha, who emphasised the significance of Lepcha folk dance. Mr Yashal Zangpo Bhutia provided an interpretation of the meaning behind the dance being performed, while Mr Naren Gurung shared the historical context of the dance and recounted his personal experiences as a dancer. The participants showcased vibrant performances that reflected the insights and explanations offered by the resource persons.

The programme also featured honouring Ms Gyatri Rai, recipient of the State Meritorious Service Award during the 76th Republic Day at Paljor Stadium. Additionally, Ms Mamta Singh Cintury and Ms Kala Bhutia were recognised for receiving the Nritya Sewa Samman at the Bhanu Jayanti celebrations held in Gangtok.

The resource persons, Mr Bhaichung Tsichudarpa, Mr Norden Lepcha, and Mr Naren Gurung, were similarly felicitated, and all participants were presented with certificates for successful completion of the workshop.

The event began with a welcome address by Ms Sonam Wangmu Shenga, Additional Director Culture Department. The event was presided by Mr Bhawani Ghimiray, Officer on Special Duty Culture Department as the Master of Ceremony, who also proposed the Vote of Thanks.

Soreng, January 28: The second phase of National road safety month has been observed by motor vehicle division, Soreng at BAC Mangalbaria Soreng district and program was graced by panchayat member Takuthang Mangalbaria GPU and president of north east government drivers association also, ASI incharge from mangalbaria outpost and all the members of mainline taxi driver association from Mangalbaria, Kaluk and Rinchenpong. As well as Dy. RTO and all the staffs of motor vehicle division, Soreng.

Various topics was covered as follows:-

1.Sarathi, Vahan and Artificial Intelligence by Bikash S***a (MVI)

2. Sign,Signals,Offence and Fines and Technologies behind Artificial Intelligence by Rajesh Bhujel ( J.E Mechanical)

3. Accidents and Good Samaritan by Joyland Lepcha (MVI)

Motor vehicle division Soreng provided a token of love to President of Mangalbaria Driver Association.

Lastly, few positive feedback was given by Northeast government driver president Mr. Gautam Tamang.
