Republic Day is celebrated on January 26 every year to remember the day when the Constitution of India came into effect. India was ruled by the British for over 200 years. India gained independence from the rule of the British Raj after a very long freedom struggle. Though India got its independence on August 14th, 1947, the constitution came into effect on January 26th, 1950.
This year India will be celebrating its 72nd Republic Day on January 26th. Due to the new traces of the Covid-19 pandemic, United Kingdom's PM Boris Johnson has cancelled his visit to India on this Republic Day. Republic Day is celebrated all over India with a lot of enthusiasm. In Delhi, magnificent parades are organized by regiments of the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, police, and paramilitary forces at Rajpath. All the states of India showcase their culture, uniqueness by building beautiful tableaus during the parade. There are air shows by Air Force, and much more to commemorate this day.

* The Constituent Assembly took almost three years (two years, eleven months and seventeen days to be precise) to complete its historic task of drafting the Constitution for Independent India.
* The Constitution was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949. It came into effect on January 26, 1950.
* The draft of the constitution was submitted to the Indian Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1947. Over the course of 166 days, that was spread over two years, the 308 members of the Assembly met in sessions which were open to the public and made few updates.
* Finally, on January 24, 1950, the Assembly members signed two handwritten copies of the Constitution, one in English and one in Hindi. Two days later on January 26th, 1950, the history was made.
* Indian Constitution is the lengthiest written constitution in the world. On the same day, Dr Rajendra Prasad's became the first President of the Indian Union.
* The Constituent Assembly ceased to exist and became the Parliament of India under the transitional provisions of the new Constitution.

The National Voters’ Day (NVD) is celebrated across the country to mark the foundation day of Election Commission of India, the autonomous constitutional authority responsible for conducting elections. The Manmohan Singh government initiated this in 2011.
National Voters' Day is celebrated every year with a theme. In 2019, the theme was "No voter to be left behind". On this day, the government holds campaigns to encourage voters, young voters to participate in the political process. National Awards are given for excellence and innovation in election processes. These awards recognise the contribution of the election machinery, government departments, media and PSUs. According to the Constitution of India, a citizen who is at least 18 years on the qualifying date is eligible to vote. The Indian democracy allows citizens to vote regardless of their previous condition of subjugation, race or colour under the Citizenship Act. NRIs who hold Indian passport can also vote.
The Election Commission of India was established on 25th January, 1950, with the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner. It operates under Article 324 of the Indian constitution. It consists of three members — a chief election commissioner and two other commissioners. They are appointed by the President of India for six-year terms. Election Commission is a constitutional authority. Elections in India are the world’s most extensive democratic exercise and the Election Commission administers them. It conducts elections to the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, state Legislative Assemblies, state legislative councils, and the offices of the President and Vice-President of the country. ECI is responsible for conducting free and fair polls and is regarded as the guardian of elections in India. It issues advisory Model Code of Conduct guidelines, which are to be followed by political parties and their candidates. Instances of violation of the code can be reported to the ECI. However, the commission does not have regulatory powers. The Model Code of Conduct contains the rules of electoral morality.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi disrespected Tamil people and that the Centre wanted to suppress Tamil culture, language and history. “But we will never allow such disrespect,’’ Rahul said launching his three-day and five district election campaign in Coimbatore. Standing atop a campaign van on the arterial Avinashi Road, Rahul said that Modi’s plans of having one culture, one language and one idea would be defeated by Tamil people.“The Prime Minister believes that India should have only one culture, one language and one idea. Modi believes that people should worship only one person and that should be him. He does not understand the spirit of the Tamil people, culture and language. Tamil people will respond only to love and kindness and respect because Tamils have self-respect,’’ he said.
Rahul said that attempt to supress diverse cultures and language was the fight that was being witnessed, not just in TN, but across India.
Hitting out the ruling AIADMK, he said the state government was compromised. “Just because Modi controls the TN government, he cannot control the Tamil people,’’ Rahul said.

Remembering Neta Ji Subhash Chandra Bose on his 125th Birth anniversary

1. Netaji secured second and fourth position in his matriculation and Indian Civil Services (ICS)examination respectively. He, however, resigned from the ICS job as he didn’t wish to serve under the alien government.
2. The Tiger of Bengal that roared for India’s freedom from British rule was a contemporary of the Father of the Nation. Bose, known for his revolutionary approach, was both an ally and an adversary of Mahatma Gandhi at different times during the Indian independence struggle
3. Netaji worked as the editor for the newspaper named Forward, owned by his mentor Chittaranjan Das, a powerful Bengal politician. Later, Netaji started his own newspaper, Swaraj, and also published a book - The Indian Struggle.
4. The iconic freedom fighter, known for his militancy approach for liberating India, was arrested, released and rearrested countless times as the British government suspected him of being involved in secret revolutionary activities.
5. Commanded by Netaji, soldiers of the Indian National Army (INA), also known as the Azad Hind Fauz, gallantly fought for an undivided and independent India. They were court-martialled and tried for treason by the British over 74 years ago.
6. Netaji's death remains one of the biggest Indian mysteries. He is said to have died in a Japenese plane crash in Taipei on August 18, 1945. This was confirmed by the Central government in response to an RTI (Right to Information) query in 2017. Various groups have, however, refuted the claim. Since his disappearance, many conspiracy theories have surfaced.
7. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was truly inspired by Swami Vivekananda and believed in his ideas and teachings.
8. Some people claim that Subhash Chandra Bose secretly lived in UP after the news of his unfortunate death, by the name of Gumnami Baba.
9. Netaji's brother Sarat Chandra Bose and his nephew Pradip Bose never believed about his death in the plane crash and many of his followers also refused to believe about the crash.
10. People even founded a pair of binoculars, a corona typewriter, Netaji’s watch, five teeth, and a silver round trimmed spectacles from the room of Gumnami Baba.
11. He established the Azad Hind Radio station in Germany and led the Indian nationalist movement in East Asia.
12. On August 23, 2007, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited the Subhas Chandra Bose memorial hall in Kolkata. Abe said to Bose's family, "The Japanese are deeply moved by Bose's strong will to have led the Indian independence movement from British rule."
13. Born in Odisha in the year 1897, Bose was exceptionally brilliant and secured top ranks throughout his study in school and university. He completed his BA in Philosophy with a first class score in 1918.
14. Earlier, Bose had been a leader of the younger, radical, wing of the Indian National Congress in the late 1920s and 1930s, rising to become Congress President in 1938 and 1939. He was expelled from Congress leadership positions in 1939, following differences with Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and the Congress high command, after openly attacking the Congress' foreign and internal policies.

Subhas Chandra Bose's daughter, Anita B Pfaff, has opposed the demand to confer the Bharat Ratna on the iconic freedom fighter “now”, which she feels is “so late”. “We have opposed giving Netaji the Bharat Ratna so late. Many people of a lesser stature have received the award. It would have been appropriate to confer it to Netaji as one of the first recipients but not now,” she told TOI in an email interview.
Incidentally, former PM Narasimha Rao had proposed to confer Bharat Ratna on Netaji posthumously, declassified files on Netaji released in 2016 had revealed. Pfaff has welcomed the constitution of a high-level committee to commemorate Netaji's 125th birth anniversary.

23/01/2021

Mehbooba M***i, the former chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir, lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Union government for “vandalising the Constitution”, and making Jammu and Kashmir into a “political experimental laboratory”, and averred never to ally with the BJP again.
She admitted that the alliance between her People's Democratic Party and the BJP was her father's idea.

“Allying with the BJP was my father's (M***i Mohammad Sayeed) decision for a larger cause, and I honoured it. That's that and (it) doesn't go beyond it,” M***i told HT in an interview.

She also indicated that she had misgivings about the alliance.

“My father had a political vision not only for J&K but also for the country. He put everything at stake, including his credibility, while aligning with the BJP, only with the intention to secure what we already had — our special status — and to find a peaceful and dignified solution to the Kashmir problem… So even though I have never been a great fan of the BJP, I could not walk away from his decision,” the former CM said.

22/01/2021

To combat cases of harassment of women, the Lucknow police are deploying facial recognition technology supported by security cameras that can read expressions of women in distress and alert the nearest police station even before they call the police helpline.
The technology is believed to use artificial intelligence (AI) to read facial expressions of women and increase the safety of women in the city. The latest project will take place under the Uttar Pradesh government's Mission Shakti programme that was launched in October.
The police have identified 200 hotspots where the movement of women was maximum in the city and from where most of the complaints were received.
The police will initially install five AI-based cameras which will get activated after detecting facial expressions of women.

Tesla chief and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk on Thursday took to Twitter to promise a $100 million prize for development of the "best" technology to capture carbon dioxide emissions.
Capturing planet-warming emissions is becoming a critical part of many plans to keep climate change in check, but very little progress has been made on the technology to date, with efforts focused on cutting emissions rather than taking carbon out of the air. The International Energy Agency said late last year that a sharp rise in the deployment of carbon capture technology was needed if countries are to meet net-zero emissions targets. "Am donating $100M towards a prize for best carbon capture technology," Musk wrote in a tweet, followed by a second tweet that promised "Details next week."

22/01/2021

China on Thursday dismissed a report that said it had built a village in Arunachal Pradesh, saying the construction activities were within its own territory and its sovereign right.

The Chinese foreign ministry was responding to the report based on satellite imagery, which showed rows of houses in Indian territory that has been under Chinese control since 1959, and which is disputed.
“First, I would like to tell you that China's position on the east sector of the China-India boundary, or Zangnan (the southern part of China's Tibet), is consistent and clear. We have never recognised the so-called Arunachal Pradesh illegally established on Chinese territory,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a media briefing while responding to a question on the report on Thursday.

“China's normal construction on its own territory is entirely a matter of sovereignty,” Hua added.

China has offered 500,000 doses of a Coronavirus vaccine to its ally Pakistan, an apparent response to the rolling out of supplies by India for its neighbours and key partners, including three million doses delivered to Bangladesh and Nepal on Thursday.

Two Indian flights carried two million doses of Covishield to Dhaka and one million doses to Kathmandu, and people familiar with developments said on condition of anonymity that supplies would be sent to Seychelles (50,000 doses), Mauritius (100,000 doses) and Myanmar (1.5 million doses) on Friday.

Seven countries – Bhutan, the Maldives, Bangladesh, Nepal, Seychelles, Myanmar and Mauritius – are part of India's initial rollout of vaccines as grant assistance. There are also plans to supply doses to Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.
