Minister for Irrigation and former PCC chief N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Tuesday said the Congress government would not implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) or the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the State.

Speaking at an Iftar party in Kodad on Tuesday, he said the return of the Congress government has reinstated democracy and secularism in Telangana. He said under the previous BRS regime none of the promises made for minorities, including the 12% Muslim reservation, were honoured. He alleged that KCR was a pseudo-secular who strengthened the roots of the BJP and the RSS in Telangana in the past ten years.

The Minister said that only the Congress could guarantee the continuance of secularism and democracy in India and only the Congress was capable of fighting the BJP at the national level. The return of the BJP for the third term at the Centre would be a severe blow for minorities, especially Muslims. Despite fierce opposition, the BJP government has already implemented the CAA. If the BJP wins again, it will likely introduce the NRC and NPR.

“If Modi is re-elected, he will dismantle the secular fabric. However, if Rahul Gandhi becomes PM, he will uphold secularism and democracy,” he emphasised. He said regional parties such as the BRS and the TDP cannot be trusted as they can align with the BJP anytime for their own personal interests.

The Minister said that, as promised, the budget for minorities’ welfare will be increased to ₹4,000 crore, and a sub-plan for minorities will also be introduced after the Lok Sabha elections.

The Medipally police of Rachakonda booked cases against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar and others for obstructing police deployed for bandobast duty at Chengicherla on Wednesday. The police booked the cases by citing that the inspector of Nacharam police, A. Nandishwar Reddy, sustained injuries in the commotion.

The Nacharam police was deployed at Pittal Basti in Chengicherla, Ghatkesar following a communal dispute between two communities on March 24.

On Wednesday, the BJP MP visited Chengicherla. The mob of about more than 50 individuals, including Mr. Kumar, stormed the place by bypassing the police staffers, injuring a few officers at the spot, said the higher officials from the Rachakonda police, adding that they will be making arrests in the case in due time.

27/03/2024

Darshan Babu is an engineer who is fond of betting on cricket matches and has been placing major bets on Indian Premier League (IPL) games since 2021. He often borrows money after losing a bet, or to place one when he is short on funds. His 23-year-old wife, tired of the constant harassment by creditors, died by su***de. Ranjitha was found hanging at her home in Karnataka's Chitradurga on March 18. According to the family, Darshan had racked up a debt of over ₹ 1 crore.

He worked as an assistant engineer in the Minor Irrigation Department at Hosadurga and had been ensnared in the realm of IPL betting from 2021 to 2023. This took a major toll on the couple's finances. Allegedly, he had borrowed over ₹ 1.5 crore to place bets after his luck ran out and he lost all his money. While he managed to return ₹ 1 crore, cops say that he still has a pending loan of ₹ 84 lakh.

Ranjitha married Darshan in 2020. She realised the truth about Darshan's involvement in betting in 2021, claims her father Venkatesh.

In his complaint, Venkatesh said that his daughter was extremely distressed due to the constant harassment by moneylenders and this led to her su***de. He has also named 13 men who had allegedly lent the money.

He said that his son-in-law was lured into betting with a promise of quick money.

"He (Darshan) was not willing to get into betting, but the suspects forced him saying it was an easy way to get rich. They promised to finance his betting activities against some blank cheques as security," he said.

Cops during their investigation found a su***de note, where she detailed the harassment they faced. Darshan and Ranjitha have a two-year-old son.

Students appearing for Class X Mathematics examination at a centre in the city faced anxious moments when they were not provided the mandatory graph papers on Saturday.

The officials at the centre in a private school in Khairatabad received the mathematics question paper bundle along with main answer sheets and additional sheets but failed to notice the absence of graph papers before commencement of the exam. The issue came into the light when students sought graph papers to write the answers.

After initial confusion, centre officials asked students to write the graph in the main answer sheet. Following the exam, students brought the issue to the notice of their parents and higher officials concerned.

The confusion arose, according to official sources, due to lack of communication between the centre officials to the School Education department. “As per the procedure, centre officials must check whether or not they received all material before commencement of the exam. The bulk question and graph papers are provided with DEOs. However, in this case, the centre officials did not inform about absence of graph papers,” sources said.

Viewing the issue seriously, the department removed both chief superintendent and departmental officer of the centre from the examination work.

In another incident, a custodian deputed at a centre in Ranga Reddy district went to another centre for additional sheets during the examination. Considering this serious violation, the custodian was relieved.

Also, one chief superintendent and two departmental officers were also relieved for negligence during the work. Over all, six officers were removed from exam duties on Saturday.

A total of 4,95,293 regular students registered and 4,93,652 were present for the exam, during which no malpractice case has been booked. Similarly, out of 6,069 private students allotted to different centres, 5,301 took the exam.

22/03/2024

In a significant development, the Supreme Court has yet again rebuked the Telangana Police for routinely exercising the powers of preventive detention to detain individuals without considering the fundamental rights guaranteed under the constitution.

The Bench Comprising CJI DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra gave a warning to the Telangana Police to not pass detention order without the application of mind.

The observation of the Court came while deciding a plea of the person who was preventively detained by the Telangana Police for committing a repeated offence of “chain snatching”. The ground taken by the Telangana Police to justify the detention was that the act of the detenu affected the 'public order', by creating fear and panic in the minds of the women.

The Supreme Court quashed the detention order stating that the act of the detenu caused no prejudice to the 'public order' to invoke the powers of preventive detention.

It is important to mention that last year, in the Ameena Begum case, the Court had criticized the Telangana Police for the reckless use of the Telangana Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act, 1986 to detain individuals.

While dealing with the same set of incidents, the Supreme Court in the present case expressed hope the Telangana State wouldn't pass detention order without application of mind.

The recent arrests of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and BRS MLC Kavitha prove that the ruling BJP at the Center is acting with the sole intention of destroying the opposition. For this, the central government is using ED, CBI, IT, and other central investigation agencies.”
