SJCAM is a company that is most known for making budget friendly action cameras. And the most impressive part is that they keep improving. It seems as though they release a new better action camera every month while keeping the same price! This time SJCAM has come out with the SJ6 Legend. SJCAM SJ6 Legend is a 4K action camera that should offer a cheaper alternative for GoPro Hero5 Black. I’m definitely going to compare those two as well soon. But for now, let’s take a look at how good the SJ6 Legend actually is.

DESIGN
The SJCAM SJ6 Legend comes in a nice large box. It’s placed inside the waterproof housing so it’s pretty impossible for the camera to get damaged during shipping. A pretty nice solution. The design of the SJ6 Legend is basically the same as 99% other action cameras. It has the rectangular design that most accessories support. It has a dimension of 59×41×29mm / 2.3×1.6×1.1″ and weighs 83g / 2.9oz with the battery. So a pretty light action camera. Definitely a plus for people into aerial photography or even FPV racing.

The front of the SJCAM SJ6 Legend has the lens, some LED lights and a LCD screen. The front LCD screen displays video modes, recording time and battery. It’s actually surprisingly large and detailed. I really like it. The back of the action camera has a very nice 2″ LCD touchscreen, just like the one on GoPro Hero5 Black. You can use the touchscreen to change settings and view past footage. Because it’s touchscreen, it makes your life so much easier as you don’t have to use buttons to navigate through a small menu. I also want to add that it’s super responsive, like it’s one of the best screens I have used.Top of the SJ6 Legend has the shutter/record button for either recording videos or taking photos. Left side has the power on and menu button. The menu button is used to access the menu settings on the touchscreen. Right side has the MiniUSB, MicroHDMI and MicroSD ports, also including the built in mic. And finally the bottom, which holds a compartment for the battery and a threaded hole for tripods. There are also plenty of LED lights on all sides which indicate different modes etc. Overall speaking it’s a very nice design. One of the best looking action cameras I have reviewed.

ACCESSORIES
SJCAM has always been spot on when it comes to accessories. SJ6 Legend is no different. You get a nice range of different mounts and adapters with the package. Including an interesting waterproof case. The waterproof case has a removable back and it comes with a touchscreen friendly back. It’s basically made out of this flexible material that you can add to your waterproof case. So you can use the touchscreen even when it’s inside the housing. I haven’t seen this on any other action camera. Another great feature is the tripod thread which lets you use accessories made by other companies as well.

SJCAM SJ6 Legend Accessories

Also the SJCAM and GoPro quick clips aren’t the same. They look pretty similar but the SJCAM one is much more thinner. So if you are planning to use GoPro or SJCAM mounts, then make sure you have the correct quick clip attached. I also like that they have included a bracket. You can use the bracket and the screw mount to attach the camera anywhere you want without having to use the waterproof case. I personally used that in my car with the adhesive mount.

EXTRAS
The best part about the SJCAM brand is that they also have other accessories as well other than the ones you get with the camera.

Bluetooth remote – It’s a simple remote control that can be worn around your wrist. It has all the necessary buttons to operate the camera from a distance. You can even turn it on and off with the remote. It’s a really good device if you are on the move and can’t use your phone.

Bluetooth remote control

External microphone – Having the ability to use an external microphone is a huge plus for the camera. There’s plenty of musicians who are looking for action camera to record their music for youtube. You can strap them onto a guitar for example and make a pretty cool video. The SJCAM external microphone has a MiniUSB cable that’s connected straight to the camera. The cable also has a nylon cover which I find really nice. There is also a clip and the last part of microphone is flexible as well. You can bend it any way you require. Overall the external microphone noticeably improves the audio quality.

SJCAM External Microphone

Lens filters – There’s only so much a camera and it’s software can do when it comes to recording outdoors. Sometimes the sun is just too much and for that SJCAM has also got filters for the lens. The UV filter for example helps reduce the blue color from daylight and fades the sun light more evenly. It also protects your camera lens and doesn’t let the dust gather on it. So you can really always use it when you don’t have the camera in a waterproof case.

SETTINGS & MENU
It’s pretty easy to use the camera. Just hold down the power button on the side of the camera until the LED lights turn red and the touchscreen turns on.

SJ6 Legend Menu

This is the basic view from the touchscreen that provides all the information you need. Such as the battery life, minutes left to record on your SD card, video mode and of course settings. If you want to for example switch from video to photos, then you have to tap the “Video” part with the arrow and you’ll get this:

SJ6 Legend Menu Modes

These are the basic modes than can be used. There are 3 more modes that you can’t see on the screenshot. You can access them by just scrolling down. Those include Video+Photo, Car and Underwater. All of these modes also have separate settings that can all be changed. For that you’ll need to tap the settings logo at the bottom left of the first image.

SJ6 Legend Menu Settings

The camera also comes with WiFi so you can also change all the settings from your phone. The SJCAM ZONE app is available for both iOS and Android devices. You can use it to change settings, view live footage and start recording. SJCAM has also got a separate remote control available that can also be bought from their online store. In order to turn on WiFi, you first need to go back onto the first screen. From there, you need to slide a finger down across the screen and you’ll get a whole new menu:

SJ6 Legend WiFi

From here you can do 4 things: WiFi, Pair with remote control, FPV(Drone) mode and Lock. By tapping onto the WiFi logo, you turn it on and the camera can be found on your iOS and Android devices. Make sure you have the SJCAM app downloaded before doing that. What I really like about the SJCAM WiFi is that the action camera also displays the password needed to access the camera.

SJCAM SJ6 Legend WiFi 2

After that all you need to do is tap connect camera in the SJCAM app and that’s it. The FPV drone mode can be used to enable the TV out feature on the camera. Which means that it transfers the view to an external device. You can also use the SJ6 Legend as an external camera when connected to a laptop or PC via USB. For example you can use it on Skype etc. A pretty nice feature for those who don’t have a we**am for example.

And I want to add again how nice the touchscreen is. There is no lag at all while moving through the settings. Also sliding down is super responsive and I have never managed to accidentally get into a sub-menu while sliding down. Which is quite impressive as I have used screens before that are the most annoying to use. Especially when you want to scroll down and the second you try to slide down the screen some menu will react to the touch and activate. But that is definitely not the case on the SJ6 Legend and it literally does everything you want.
VIDEO & PHOTO
Since 4K videos are becoming more and more popular, SJCAM has too decided to jump on board. The SJ6 Legend has the MN34120PA sensor by Panasonic and the Novatek 96660 chipset. It is also capable of recording 4K* videos at up to 24fps. I want to add that the 4K videos aren’t actually captured in 4K if that makes sense. The action camera basically takes the 2K resolution as the base and invents additional pixels to create the 4K resolution. Doing so, it will never be as good as you’ll see on more expensive action cameras.

I’m really glad that they have admitted to doing it. So all the other resolutions are legit. If you are looking for higher frames per second, then you can also use the Full HD 1080p which can be used with up to 60fps. For the 720p at 120fps for slow motion. Pretty decent specs overall for a $149 action camera.
CONCLUSION
I personally quite like the SJ6 Legend action camera. It does have a sort of a long learning curve though I feel. Don’t get me wrong it’s super easy to use, but in order to get the best video quality possible you still need to know what you are doing. Especially playing with the settings to suit the environment. But that’s the case with all cameras. Once you get it right, the videos actually have a very nice quality.

In my opinion, the SJCAM SJ6 Legend is the perfect action camera for drones and low budget. The video quality you get for $149 is not bad at all. Not to mention the extra features that are actually really nice. I could definitely see this used in a band to record practicing and such. I’m sure there are people searching for action cameras with an external microphone feature.

The Xiaomi Mi A1 has been launched at Rs. 14,999
The device performs well overall
Xiaomi on Tuesday took the wraps off its all-new Mi A1 Android One smartphone which represents a reboot of Google's Android One project. The Chinese company started working with Google for the Mi A1 Android One smartphone almost six months ago, it said during the launch keynote.

Introducing the new Android One device on Tuesday, Google's Jon Gold, Global Director of Android Partner Programs, stressed that the Xiaomi Mi A1 is an example of the future of Android One, which makes it clear that the project is no longer just about entry-level phones. Android One was introduced back in 2014 as a way to promote the stock Android experience and guarantee timely updates for phones in the budget segment, and India was one of the first countries in which devices were launched. However, it never took off the way Google had hoped, and now this new launch can be seen as a way to reimagine and reboot Android One.
The Xiaomi Mi A1 is being heavily marketed as "created by Xiaomi and powered by Google". At the launch event, Gold also hinted that Android One will soon span across a broad range of devices and price points. The Mi A1 has already been guaranteed to receive an update to Android 8.0 Oreo by the end of this year, and while it is too early, next year's Android P launch also falls within the guaranteed update period.

Xiaomi's Mi A1 not only has a lot riding on it for the Chinese company perspective but also for Google. Bringing on Xiaomi as a partner for Android One is a smart move, considering that the recently launched Redmi Note 4 and Redmi 4 are two of the top-selling smartphones in India. Xiaomi also now features in the top five smartphone brands in the country, according to IDC, and has sold 25 million smartphones in India so far. Its new retail strategy has also been helping it grow.
Xiaomi Mi A1 look and feel
The Xiaomi Mi A1 definitely seems like an upgrade in terms of design compared to any Redmi device launched in India. While it carries forward design cues from already-launched Xiaomi devices, it manages to stand out. It is essentially a variant of the Mi 5X that was launched in China in July. This phone comes in Black, Gold, and Rose Gold colours. We received a Gold unit for review. Initially, only the Black and Gold colours will be available, with Rose Gold units arriving after a few weeks.

The front boasts of 2.5D curved-edge Gorilla Glass, which makes the phone feel premium. The rounded edges and corners mean that it fits easily in a palm, and the 7.3mm side profile gives it sleek appearance. Xiaomi has said repeatedly that the Mi A1 feels great in the hand, and we cannot entirely deny that. The all-metal body looks solid, but the back is very slippery and we had to be extra cautious when using this phone normally. We would suggest that buyers use some kind of case or cover with this phone. Compared to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and Mi Max 2, the Mi A1 comes across as more premium.
Xiaomi has also compared the Mi A1 to the iPhone 7 Plus, and we can clearly see some similarities. The Mi A1's dual rear cameras are placed similarly, and the antenna lines also look like the ones on the iPhone 7 series. Being extra cautious about overheating, Xiaomi has claimed that all Mi A1 units in India will ship with dual pyrolytic graphite sheets which should radiate heat quickly and decrease temperatures by 2 degrees.

There are capacitive Android navigation buttons below the screen. The power and volume buttons have a good tactile feel, and are placed on the right where they are easily accessible with a thumb or forefinger depending on which hand you are using the phone with. The hybrid dual-SIM tray is on the left, while an Infrared emitter is placed on top. The bottom has a USB Type-C port, a speaker grille, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

The fingerprint reader is located at the back, and it works well. The dual cameras protrude slightly from the rear, and are accompanied by a two-tone flash. There's no branding at the front but you will find a familiar Mi logo on the lower back, along with an Android One logo.

Overall, the Mi A1 looks and feels better than any Xiaomi device we have reviewed to date. We liked the attention to detail like the neat-looking speaker grille and the separation lines at the back which stand out from the usual antenna bands we have been seeing on phones at this price. However, the Mi A1's main problem is that it looks a lot like many phones already out there including some Xiaomi and Vivo models. Since this phone is different from any other Xiaomi has released in terms of software and is expected to be the first of a new series, we would have liked it to stand out more
Xiaomi Mi A1 specifications and software
The Xiaomi Mi A1 is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor which we have previously seen under the hood of the Redmi Note 4 and Mi Max 2. At this phone's launch, Xiaomi indicated that this allows it to keep the price of the Mi A1 in check. The SoC is clocked at 2GHz and is coupled with 4GB of RAM. There's 64GB of storage, and expansion is possible using a microSD card (up to 128GB). Much like other Xiaomi devices, the Mi A1 has a hybrid dual-SIM design which means you have to choose between using two Nano-SIMs or one Nano-SIM and a microSD card.
Xiaomi Mi A1 cameras
The dual cameras on the Xiaomi Mi A1 make up one of its biggest features. Thanks to the two different lenses, the company claims you can get 2x optical zoom and blurred backgrounds. Starting off with the depth mode, we were able to take some great samples with bokeh effects. Most of our portrait shots had clearly defined edges but some did manage to overdo the blurring. Colours were natural and edges were defined well when there was adequate light, but this took a hit in low light. No manual effort is required, and the effect does work better than it does on the the Lenovo K8 Note (Review), which required some amount of manual adjustment. Xiaomi claims that its portrait mode can match the performance of the iPhone 7 Plus (Review) and OnePlus 5 (Review), but in our opinion, the Mi A1 is still few software updates away from reaching that standard.

Autofocusing on the Mi A1 is quick, and is mostly accurate even in different light conditions. Phase detection autofocus (PDAF) and face detection help the camera lock focus in no time. We managed some decent landscape shots, but macro shots didn't have the kind of sharpness and detail that we observed with the Mi Max 2 (Review). The phone was able to capture good amounts of texture and detail with low noise, but only in good light. During our review, we also noticed some exposure problems in very high-contrast scenes where details in the shadows were completely off.

Xiaomi Mi A1 performance
We found the Mi A1's screen bright enough, and both text and images look sharp. Viewing angles is good as well. However, we found the glass to be too reflective for our liking and we had to push the brightness all the way up under direct sunlight.

Like the Redmi Note 4 and Mi Max 2, the Mi A1 is a capable performer. It's snappy and efficient for most tasks, thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor. 4GB of RAM is good enough for multitasking, and allows you to run multiple apps without any trouble. Touch response was good, and we didn't face any kind of lag throughout the review period. We had a good time playing heavy games such as Last Day on Earth: Survival and Asphalt 8: Airborne. Even light games like Subway Surfers and Candy Crash ran smoothly. We also found the 5.5-inch display great for watching videos. The Mi A1 managed to produce benchmark scores similar to what we have seen with the Mi Max 2 and Redmi Note 4. AnTuTu gave us 66,381 points while GFXBench returned a score of 27fps. The phone also managed 8,926 in 3D Mark Ice Storm Extreme and 28,955 in Quadrant.

Xiaomi says it has used dual pyrolytic graphite sheets to dissipate heat effectively, and we can say that we faced no major problems when gaming for hours. We didn't have trouble when gaming, but we did find that the phone gets warm when it is being charged.

The Mi A1 supports 4G with VoLTE (voice over LTE), and call clarity was good. The phone was able to latch on to networks even in weak spots, which is great. The IR emitter worked flawlessly with the Mi Remote app; the same as with other Xiaomi devices.
Xiaomi Mi A1 battery life
The 3080mAh battery in the Mi A1 lasted for roughly 15 hours with heavy usage. We had Outlook, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Telegram, Gmail, and WhatsApp running in the background at all times. In our HD video loop test, the Mi A1 managed to run for 10 hours and 18 minutes, which was decent but not great. One of the problems that the Mi A1 will face is that other Xiaomi devices have better battery performance. The company has stated that the Mi A1 will be shipping with a bulky charger keeping in mind the patchy electricity situation in India, which seems like a gimmick to us. The phone took roughly two hours to charge fully, which isn't too bad.

Verdict
When the Android One programme was first launched, it promised a lot but eventually faded away. With Xiaomi, Google has managed to put a fresh face for Android One, but how well the new plan goes is yet to be seen. When it comes to price, the Xiaomi Mi A1 is a firecracker of a package. The metal body and overall finish are superb, while the display and overall performance are good. Users will also get to experience stock Android on a Xiaomi phone for the first time, so those who never liked MIUI, this one's for you. The dual cameras work well.

Things which need attention are battery life and low-light photography, which even other Xiaomi models are better at.

At Rs. 14,999, the Xiaomi Mi A1 will be available across several channels including Flipkart, Mi.com, offline retail partners, and the company's own Mi Home stores. It will be going on sale starting September 12. Considering that Xiaomi has managed to make a huge name for itself with its MIUI software, it will be interesting to see the response to this phone in India and other markets where it's launching.

10/04/2018

In a market as competitive as the Indian smartphone market, every company strives to achieve the number one position. But what happens once they achieve it? Ever since Xiaomi joined Samsung as the top-selling smartphone in Indian smartphone market at the end of Q3 2017, as per IDC, it was only a matter of time the Chinese company took the title for itself.
And that’s what has happened. According to the latest figures from IDC, Xiaomi has been crowned the king of the Indian smartphone market beating the chaebol during the fourth quarter of the year 2017, creating a certain pressure on Xiaomi to remain the leader. It’s one thing reaching the top but to sustain it is a totally different ball game. Perhaps that’s why Xiaomi has been a bit quieter than other brands. While others have made a lot of noise about launching new handsets, all this time Xiaomi was sitting tight. We’re in the second month of the year and Xiaomi has finally decided to launch its products in India, which are going on sale tomorrow for the first time.

Among all the launched products -- the Redmi Note 5, Redmi Note 5 Pro and the Mi TV 4 -- recently, here we are going to talk about the Pro edition of the newly launched Redmi Note 5. The India launch marks the global entry of this device which comes with certain features worth your attention such as a completely new Snapdragon 636 processor, the 20MP front camera and a dual rear camera setup, because of which, the company is calling it ‘India’s camera beast.’ We played with the device for a few days and here is our review:
Redmi 5 Pro Design and Display
Given the obsession of the smartphone world with the 18:9 aspect ratio of the display Xiaomi too has incorporated this for the Redmi 5 Pro. But this isn’t the first Xiaomi phone to come with a bezel-less design in India as it had introduced this feature with its flagship device the Mi Mix 2 last year. However, with the Redmi 5 Pro, now it won’t burn a hole in your pocket. Due to the bigger display, the capacitive keys are now on-screen keys.
The front is as usual dominated by the display along with the selfie camera, earpiece and the usual array of sensors on the top edge, with a layer of 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass on the top with rounded display corners. The curves make the phone easy to hold and facilitate smooth operation, despite sporting a 5.99-inch screen size.

Turn the smartphone around and you will first see a vertically placed iPhone X like rear camera setup, where the LED flash is housed in between the two lenses. Frankly, this is not the first time when an Apple design feature has made its way to other smartphones. Remember when the dual rear camera setup of the iPhone 7 Plus was unveiled, how many handset makers got "inspired" by the design?
Moving on, the back panel also has a centrally placed fingerprint sensor and the Mi branding below it. The handset comes with a micro-USB charging port (we fail to understand why) that is placed at the bottom, along with 3.5mm audio jack and the mono speaker. There's a volume rocker and power button on the right, while the left side has a SIM card tray. The top of smartphone has the IR blaster that lets it control devices such as a TV.

Coming to the display, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro has a 5.99-inch screen with a FHD+ resolution of 2160x1080p. The display comes with features such as Reading mode, which reduces the blue light emissions; Schedule that lets you customize the period of this reading mode; Contrast and colour selection and text size options. The images were quite sharp and we did not see any pixelization. The sunlight legibility is not one of the best suits of the device and we also felt the display looks slightly dimmer, when viewed from a certain angle.
Overall, we can say we did not have any complaints with the slim body design and is definitely going to grab some attention, even if it’s just for the rear camera panel.
Performance and camera
Let’s talk about the specs of the device as it comes with a noteworthy feature. Debuting along with the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Pro is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor, making it the first smartphone in the world to be powered by it. This new chipset features the newest Kyro technology, claimed to be seen in the 800-series chipset. Apart from this, the Note 5 Pro has 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage.
The device runs Xiaomi's MIUI 9 skin based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat, and should hopefully receive an Oreo-based update as all major launches of this year now are expected to come with the latest operating system. The MIUI 9, like the typical Xiaomi UI, has no app drawer and therefore all apps are placed on multiple home-screens. It comes with an app lock feature and dual apps space customized theme option. The leftmost home screen comes with quick cards that show the frequently used features and information. It is placed in the form of cards, similar to Today's page in iOS, that show shortcuts, calendar, take a note and more. This can obviously be customized as per the user and comes in quite handy once you start depending on it.
One thing that we must point out is that even though the handset has a third-party theme support, these apps are not yet optimized for the 18:9 aspect ratio of the display. There is a blank black patch that comes on the lock screen if you select any app and it surely gets on your nerves after a point. When we asked Xiaomi about this, they said, "Starting this month, all official themes from Mi India will be adapted to 18:9 aspect ratio. Also, third-party theme developers are being pushed to adopt their themes for 18:9 phones."

In short, right now you get only two native themes that are fully supporting the display.
We ran Antutu and GeekBench 4 tests on our device. While the phone scored 100031 in Antutu Benchmarks, the single-core and multi-core scores on GeekBench 4 were 1772 and 4227 respectively.
During our testing, we found the overall performance of the Xiaomi Note 5 Pro to be simply incredible. The phone handled multi-tasking of random app in a smooth lag-free way. We did not encounter any frame freezing of any kind. Both the call quality and the Audio quality are also quite good. The issue persists with the speaker placed at the bottom as the sound gets muffled when the device is placed in a landscape mode.
The Xiaomi Redmi 5 Pro is backed by a 4000mAh battery that easily lasted us for more than a day of average use that included playing games and browsing social media apps, with Wi-Fi turned on.
Moving on to the cameras, the Xiaomi Note 5 Pro comes with a -- iPhone-look-alike -- dual rear camera setup of 12MP+5MP RGB sensors. The primary 12MP camera has a 1.25µm sensor and a f/2.2, while the secondary camera has 1.12µm sensor and f/2.0. As per Xiaomi, the secondary camera comes in handy for depth sensing in the portrait mode as well as capturing 'additional information' in low-light shots. On the front, the device a whopping 20MP camera, not seen something on a Xiaomi device before. This front camera comes equipped with Beautify 4.0 AI algorithm and a dedicated selfie-light, clearly marking its move to capture the selfie-crazed generation of the country.

The camera app is pretty simple with options to make a video, a short video (it is preset to 10 seconds), capture a picture in square mode, portrait mode, panorama and manual mode. It also has native Instagram-like filters for the users.

In our experience, the camera of the smartphone is excellent. The colours were sharp and true to the actual shades. The Bokeh effect was also bang on where the camera was able to completely focus on the foreground. Even the selfie camera will amaze you with the precision of its Bokeh effects. Also, the beautification feature surprisingly looks realistic rather than making one look like an anime character. The otherwise perfect front camera just falls short of capturing detailed low-light images. But overall, the Note 5 Pro does stand up to the camera beast tag it comes with.

Verdict
The Xiaomi Note 5 Pro is hands down a great phone. It has a powerful processor and a good camera, not just on paper but in experience as well. The FHD+ display in an 18:9 aspect ratio is an added perk. The device comes in two storage variants of 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage at Rs 13,999, which is dirt cheap for the kind of specs it offers.
There is also a 6GB RAM variant that comes at Rs 16,999, making it the first Xiaomi Note phone to have 6GB RAM variant. Personally, we feel, 4GB will be enough for a casual user, but for those who want extra, even this variant doesn’t qualify as over-priced. With so many things going for it, it’s hard but to not absolutely recommend the Note 5 Pro. Competition better up their game as Xiaomi with Note 5 Pro clearly has
