A newly identified pest, the spider mite, has caused alarm among apple growers in the apple-rich villages of Babapora and Awneera in South Kashmir’s Shopian district. These villages, known for producing premium-quality apples, are now facing significant losses due to the pest outbreak.

The spider mites infest leaves, creating protective silk webs and damaging plants by extracting essential nutrients. Farmers report that the pest can devastate orchards within a week, leaving large swathes of apple farms affected. Orchardists in Awneera expressed their distress, noting that this pest has never been reported in the area before. “We are clueless about its origin,” said a local farmer.

This outbreak follows the emergence of other novel diseases like leaf miner infestations, which first appeared in the region a few years ago. Experts suggest that these issues may stem from imported rootstock and plant material from Italy and other countries, which often bypass proper quarantine procedures.

Farmers are urging authorities and agricultural experts to investigate the pest’s origin and provide immediate solutions to save the region’s apple orchards from further damage. The recurring introduction of pests threatens the livelihood of cultivators and the future of Kashmir’s apple industry.

The iconic saffron fields of Kashmir are facing an existential crisis as climate change and inadequate irrigation systems jeopardize the livelihoods of over 35,000 farming families. Over the past decade, saffron production has plummeted by 67.5%, according to official data, leaving the region’s saffron industry in a precarious state. Despite the National Saffron Mission 2010 allocating resources for 128 borewells, only 78 remain operational, with farmers criticizing the initiative as ineffective. Once celebrated for yielding up to 10-11 tons of premium saffron annually, Kashmir’s saffron industry is now at a crossroads, with farmers voicing fears over declining yields and an uncertain future.
