*Govt empowers states, UTs to act against three banned J&K-based groups*

New Delhi, Mar 9: The Centre on Friday authorised all states and Union Territories to take action against three banned Jammu and Kashmir-based groups under the UAPA.

The three groups are the Muslim Conference Jammu and Kashmir (Sumji faction), Muslim Conference Jammu and Kashmir (Bhat faction) and Jamaat-e-Islami, Jammu and Kashmir.

In three identical notifications, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs said the Centre directs that all powers exercisable by it under Section 7 and Section 8 of the anti-terror Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967, shall be exercised by state governments and Union Territory administrations in relation to the three unlawful associations.

On February 27, the home ministry extended the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami, Jammu and Kashmir, for five years for continuing activities against the security, integrity and sovereignty of the nation.

A day later, it announced that the Muslim Conference Jammu and Kashmir (Sumji faction) and the Muslim Conference Jammu and Kashmir (Bhat faction) were also declared as banned groups for their anti-India and pro-Pakistan propaganda, besides asking people to refrain from taking part in elections.–(PTI)

South Kashmir Witnesses Second Encounter in First Week of Jan 2024

Operation underway in Shopian, came on the heels of one fought in Kulgam

Srinagar 05 Jan (CNS): An encounter broke between security forces and militants in the Chotigan area of South Kashmir's Shopian district on the wee hours Friday morning, said police.

As per the news agency CNS, police said that the gunfight started after a search operation was launched based on the inputs received by police regarding the presence of militants in the area.

"Encounter has started at Chotigam area of Shopian district. Shopian Police, Army & CRPF are on the job. Further details shall follow," said the Kashmir Zone Police in a post on X .

However, there were no reports of any casualty being inflicted on either side engaged in the gunfight.

The encounter in Shopian came on the heels of the operation fought in Kulgam's Hadigam village where militants were believed to have given a slip to security forces during night. (CNS)

Taking cognizance of a complaint, Cyber Police Kashmir has registered a case vide FIR number 39/2023 under sections 66D of IT Act and 429 of IPC against the operators of "Curative Survey Agency" which has fraudulently collected a huge amount of money from the people in J&K on the false promise of "doubling their investment in 15 days." Subsequently, the directors have allegedly disappeared, absconding with crores of rupees.
