A mortician's job is to carry out cosmetic enhancements to a deceased's body and to make it presentable before burial. It is different from that of a coroner whose responsibility is to find out the cause of death. In India, all governments- state or central, past or present, majority or coalition- have always modelled themselves on the mortician whenever something goes wrong or an accident takes place....

Emile Borel, a famous French mathematician in the first half of the 20th century, had propounded the Infinite Monkey Theorem which stated that if a monkey is given a typewriter and allowed to pound away on its keys for an indefinite amount of time it would, sooner or later, produce the complete works of Shakespeare. Something similar holds true for the award of medals to policemen in India: if a police official serves long enough and rises high enough in the hierarchy, he would be festooned with more medals than Michael Phelps by the time he retires....

In the annals of Indian Architectural Journalism, one name stands out prominently: Sardar Patwant Singh (28 March 1925 - 8 August 2009). A renaissance man of his time, Singh wore many hats - architectural journalist, writer, editor, historian, publisher, conservationist, political commentator, and philanthropist. His journey in shaping India's architectural discourse began in 1953 when he single-handedly launched his first monthly publication, "The Indian Builder." This pioneering magazine shed light on the achievements and challenges faced by the burgeoning building industry in newly independent India, emphasizing its crucial role in national development....

We have a tiny summer place in the lap of the Himalayas surrounded by dense pine, oak and cedar trees. It is our serene sanctuary up in the mountains. What we experience most here is the tranquillity of the numerous forest walks. Located 10 kilometres from Shimla, the sleepy little township of Mashobra becomes thoroughly animated during the summers. About 40 families like ours from the plains establish themselves in small housing complexes that they own....

Locals bounced off the walls calling out “Rainbow... Rainbow” when I hooked a trout. To be true; I had no choice between Rainbow and Brown, but a chance. With bells on; my boys were looking for the next catch. That is how Aseem and Manu took to Angling as a hobby followed by Madhav, my grandson. It was Uhl, a tributary of river Beas, in the Barot valley....

Way back in 1983; across my room in the ‘Haslav* Technicum’, stayed a Danish boarder. The nest egg on his table caught my attention. The wholesome ‘piggy bank’, a conglomeration of coins in a clip-on see-through jar, became an object of motivation for me. Though I had a small collection of coins at home, I saved a few Scandinavian coins to begin with, followed by the currencies from the countries, I happened to visit....

Oceania, that dystopian country in Orwell's 1984 (to which India has started bearing a disturbing resemblance), has a Ministry Of Truth whose job is to function as a Ministry of Lies. Its function is to rewrite history so as to delete/revise any record inconvenient to the ruling regime of Big Brother, to edit/censor news to ensure it conforms to what the government wants, to make doubly sure that the public gets to know only what the powerful junta decides it should know....
