Delhi Capitals announce Ryan Harris as new Bowling Coach

New Delhi, 25 August 2020: JSW and GMR co-owned franchise Delhi Capitals on Tuesday announced former Australian fast bowler Ryan Harris as their new Bowling Coach. The 40-year-old will join the Delhi Capitals side in the UAE for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. James Hopes, who was the team’s Bowling Coach in 2018 and 2019, will be unable to travel with the team this year owing to personal reasons.

“I am delighted to be back in the IPL,” Ryan Harris said, on his newest challenge. “This is a huge opportunity for me to contribute to the franchise's ambitions of lifting the coveted IPL trophy. The Delhi Capitals side has an impressive bowling line up, and I can’t wait to start working with them all.”

A late entrant in international cricket, Harris has 113 Test wickets, 44 ODI wickets, and 4 T20I wickets to his name. In 2009, he won the IPL with the Deccan Chargers. Injuries forced him to announce his retirement in 2015. Since then, Harris has undertaken coaching assignments with the Australian team, Big Bash League side Brisbane Heat, and even Kings XI Punjab in the IPL.

He joins the Delhi Capitals coaching staff featuring Ricky Ponting, Mohammad Kaif, Samuel Badree & Vijay Dahiya.

AFC receives Qatar’s bid to host AFC Asian Cup 2027

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has received today the Qatar Football Association’s (QFA) bid to host the AFC Asian Cup 2027 after the country’s Ambassador to Malaysia HE Fahad bin Mohammed Kafood visited the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur to officially submit the necessary bidding documentation.

Qatar, the reigning champions of the AFC Asian Cup after clinching their maiden crown in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2019, are aiming to be the first Asian country to stage the Continent’s premier national team competition for the third time having hosted previously in 1988 and 2011.

Four other AFC Member Associations have also indicated their intentions to host Asia’s crown jewel including the All India Football Federation, Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran, Saudi Arabian Football Federation and Uzbekistan Football Association – all of whom submitted their expressions of interest by the June 30, 2020 deadline.

The AFC Executive Committee had earlier agreed to provide future hosts for the AFC Asian Cup, beginning with the 2027 edition, with more preparation time ahead of the event as part of the AFC’s continued commitment towards strengthening its competitions.

The last edition of the AFC Asian Cup in the UAE signalled a major shift for football in Asia after the tournament broke all digital media engagement and TV viewership records, following the widely acclaimed decision to expand Asia’s flagship competition from 16 to 24 national teams.

China PR, who were confirmed as hosts for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup 2023 at the AFC Extraordinary Congress in Paris, France in June 2019, will be looking to build upon the legacy of the last edition in the UAE and setting the benchmark for the 2027 edition.

The host nation for the 19th edition of the AFC Asian Cup will be announced in 2021.

Barefoot runner from Guwahati pledges 150kms to Sunfeast India Run As One

~ Irina Hazarika urges the running community in India to come forward and register for the movement in large numbers ~

On a normal day, if you ask a Guwahati resident about barefoot running, they would probably have a perplexed look on their face. Not in the case of Irina Hazarika who has taken part in numerous marathons and completed them barefoot. She is now all set to take part in the Sunfeast India Run As One and has pledged 150kms for the same.

Irina has been an active marathoner since 2015 and has completed the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon 2017, 2018, 2019 (21 K) and Tata Mumbai Marathon 2018, 2019, 2020 (42.2 K).

Irina who seeks her inspiration from ace long-distance runner Milind Soman says “I first took to barefoot running in 2015 when Milind Soman visited Guwahati to promote one of his events. We had a small conversation about barefoot running and I was completely fascinated by the concept. His story inspired me to take part in many marathons over the course of years, and complete them barefoot.”

Barefoot running is still in its nascent stages in India and people are still trying to get familiar with the concept. The first thing that occurs in our minds when we talk about barefoot running are injuries but Irina perceives barefoot running very differently.

“Barefoot running creates lesser chances of injuries in comparison to running with shoes. I have been running barefoot for the past 5 years and have never felt for a moment that I was vulnerable to any kind of injury. I feel it gives a better grip on the surface and you feel lesser fatigued while running barefoot vis-à-vis running with a sports shoe on,” said Irina.

The Sunfeast India Run As One is centred around three pillars of Community, Social Impact & Wellness. Each registration works towards helping people who have lost their livelihoods due to the COVID 19 pandemic. It can also act as seed money to support skills training and operational set-up.

Irina feels that the Sunfeast India Run As One is a very noble concept and events like these need maximum support from the running community. “I have urged all my friends from across the country to be a part of this very noble initiative. Most of my friends are runners and they all seemed very excited about registering with Sunfeast India Run As One. During the current times of pandemic, even a small support can translate into something big for people who have lost their jobs and are in need of support. This is the time when we as a society must step forward and make our contribution towards uplifting them again,” said the runner.

The value of the short distance pass tactic was my biggest learning from the 3rd Youth Olympic Games 2018, says Indian Men's Hockey Team Midfielder Vivek Sagar Prasad

Vivek Sagar Prasad speaks about the aspects that have helped him evolve as a player and getting used to playing in front of big crowds

New Delhi, 20 August 2020: The Indian Men's Hockey Team Midfielder Vivek Sagar Prasad has been in the thick of things since making his Senior Team debut in January 2018. The 20-year-old has played a key role in the Indian team's victories at the FIH Men's Series Finals and the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers last year. However, leading India to a Silver Medal at the 3rd Youth Olympic Games will always be one of the most special moments in Prasad's career. The Midfielder expressed that he understood the importance of short distance passes in that competition.

"In the 3rd Youth Olympic Games, we decided that we should move forward through short distance passes on the pitch. We felt that it's always better to stick to short distance passes and we were successful with this tactic in the tournament. Even in the senior international circuit, I applied the tactic of short distance passes and it has helped me. That was one of my big learnings from the 3rd Youth Olympic Games," said Prasad.

In his short senior international career so far, the Midfielder has acquired a rich vein of experience of playing in front of big crowds. The youngster spoke to his seniors about the things he needs to keep in mind while playing in front of big crowds during the initial matches of his career.

"There's an excitement and a sense of nervousness while playing in front of big crowds, especially in front of our home crowd. We tend to play much better in front of our own home crowd. When I initially joined the Indian team, I spoke to my seniors about how to play in front of big crowds and they told me that if I focus only on my game then I will not be distracted by anything else. Now, I am comfortable playing in front of big crowds," said the 20-year-old.

Prasad, who was adjudged the FIH Rising Star of the Year 2019, expressed about the aspects that have helped him evolve as a player.

"I have always worked very hard during practice sessions and I have only focussed on the present. I don't think too much about the future. I follow all the directives given to me by our Coaches diligently and that has helped me become a better player," said the Midfielder.

When asked about the activities he carried out during the 14-day self-isolation period after returning to the Sports Authority of India campus from home, Prasad said that he mostly focussed on his fitness drills.

"It was really nice to meet my family during our break. We carried out our 14-day self-isolation period once we got back to the Sports Authority of India campus in Bengaluru. We carried out the workout schedules given to us in our rooms. I mostly spent my time focussing on fitness drills and watched television as well," said the Midfielder.

Delhi Capitals' Indian players assemble in Mumbai ahead of departure for UAE

The players reached the team hotel in Mumbai on Thursday

Mumbai, 20 August 2020: After having spent most part of the past five months in their respective homes, the Delhi Capitals squad led by their captain Shreyas Iyer on Thursday gathered here in Mumbai ahead of their departure for the United Arab Emirates. Under such unprecedented circumstances, there are plenty of protocols and safety measures that are being taken by all the IPL franchises, and the Delhi Capitals also ensured their squad and support staff members reached Mumbai today in batches before leaving for the UAE to take part in the Indian Premier League.

Ajinkya Rahane, who is a part of the Delhi Capitals for the first time, was among the players who reached the team hotel in Mumbai, and expressed his thoughts on the challenges that all the players and franchises will face this season due to the on-going pandemic. The 32-year-old said, "There is no doubt that it will be a challenging trip for everyone involved. But like everyone else, I've spent these last few months focusing on my physical and mental health, and taking care of my family. So the time I've managed to spend with them has put me in a positive frame of mind. However, this IPL will be a very different experience for all of us, and we need to make sure that we are all very positive when we hit the ground running. The key is to take one step at a time."

Fellow Mumbaikar and young opening batsman Prithvi Shaw echoed his teammate's opinion. The 20-year-old said, "We have spent the past 4-5 months dealing with this pandemic, so everyone is aware of all the do's and don'ts. We all have been preparing mentally to live and play under such circumstances, and taking all necessary precautions for our safety and well-being."

Speaking on how his team will be approaching the upcoming season, Shaw said, "All of us at Delhi Capitals play together as a team, and approach everything as one unit. We know people have a lot of expectations from us, but our focus will be on making the most of the training sessions we get in the UAE, and re-creating that fantastic team environment which made us so successful last year. We also have the chance to gel with the new players and then set our sights on the IPL season."

Afternoon matches of IPL 13 will begin at 15:30 IST, while evening matches will begin at 19:30 IST.

Sourav got the team to certain level, MS Dhoni took it forward: Deep Dasgupta at SportsTiger’s show Off The Field

Jaipur, 18thAugust, 2020: Former Indian wicket-keeper turned commentator Deep Dasgupta recently gave his views on one of the most debated topics in Indian cricket – Who is the better captain between Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni.

Deep Dasgupta who played under Ganguly added spice to this never ending discussion and India’s fascination with declaring the best ever skipper. He believes Sourav got the team to certain level, MS Dhoni took it forward and now Virat is taking it ahead. According to him, it is like a chain reaction and very unfair to justify looking at different eras.

In a recent interaction on Sports Tiger’s show ‘Off the Field’, Dasgupta also said, “When we talk about captaincy, we do not talk about someone like Ajit Wadekar. We tend to forget that in 1971, India won two massive series away from home, against England in England and West Indies in West Indies. So, unofficially India were the No. 1 Test side way back in 1971.” During the interview, he also spoke highly of former captains and legends of the game like Kapil Dev who got India the 1983 World Cup under his captaincy, Sunil Gavaskar and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. He added “We are so fortunate to have a legacy of such great captains and players that at times, we do not appreciate that.”

He also spoke about the new guidelines by ICC around thenon-usage of saliva because of the ongoing pandemic. He believes that this will definitely give an edge to the batsmen. He said “Saliva is such an important aspect of the game.” He also added, “From a bowler’s perspective, Saliva is such a versatile thing. It helps you maintain the new ball and once the new ball is older, then it helps in reverse swing. So, there are two aspects to it. Once you take the saliva out of it, so it gets very very difficult for the bowlers and will be tilted not marginally but heavily towards batsmen.” He believes that taking the saliva out of the game will take away a major weapon for the bowlers and to balance it out, it would be preferable to play on pitches which are very helpful to the bowlers. He said that it is very logical to take saliva out of the game right now considering the situation we are in but we need to also look at the other side and try to balance the tilt.

Delhi Capitals sign Anrich Nortje as a replacement for Chris Woakes

~ The South African bowler joins Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2020 ~

New Delhi, 18th August 2020: JSW and GMR co-owned franchise Delhi Capitals today announced the signing of 26-year-old South African pacer Anrich Nortje as a replacement for Chris Woakes.

Nortje was with the Kolkata franchise last season, but a shoulder injury cut short his chances of making an IPL debut. On joining Delhi Capitals, the right-arm fast bowler said, “I am excited to join the Delhi Capitals, a team that was the talk of the tournament last season. With its exciting mix of experienced and young players and a stellar coaching line up, there is no doubt this is going to be a massive learning experience for me. I am grateful to the Delhi Capitals management for giving me this opportunity.”

Nortje made his Test debut in 2019 against India, and has to his credit, a total of 19 wickets from 6 Test matches, 14 wickets from 7 ODIs, and 2 wickets from 3 T20Is. Nortje, who was named as Cricket South Africa’s Newcomer of the Year for 2020, will be joining fellow South African Kagiso Rabada at Delhi Capitals.

Team bonding activities helped in getting through quarantine, says Indian Men's Team Forward SV Sunil

~ The 31-year-old says the 14-day quarantine period did test his team's patience, but friends, family & teammates got them through it ~

Bengaluru, 17 August 2020: With the 14-day quarantine period for the Indian Hockey Teams coming to an end on Tuesday, Indian Men's Hockey Team's Forward SV Sunil spoke about his experience of living in isolation since returning to SAI's National Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The 31-year-old said it was important for everyone to stay strong mentally to get through the challenge of staying in isolation for a lengthy period. "I think what we all realized from these past two weeks was the fact that we all needed to be really strong mentally, and to make sure that we were always in touch with our friends, family and teammates," said Sunil.

Having gained first-hand experience, the Indian Forward said he has huge respect for people who have spent time in quarantine centres or home isolation during the pandemic. "Sometimes you don't realize how much effort goes into something, but after having lived in isolation, I can relate to what everyone who has lived in quarantine centres or home isolation has gone through. It is a great challenge of mental strength and really tests your patience, so I have tremendous respect for people who have managed to get through such phases during the pandemic," said the 2014 Asian Games Gold Medallist.

The veteran Forward also spoke about how the support staff has been able to keep all the players occupied. "It was important for us to stay busy, because you can't always be on the television or play games on the phone to get through the day. So our Chief Coach and members of support staff decided to make sure we were doing something or the other. We were asked to do some research on the greatest Olympians ever, and then present to the team on our video calls. It was a nice activity as we learned a fair bit from all the players choosing various legends and talking in detail," expressed Sunil.

"We have also been able to maintain our fitness levels by following the indoor-fitness schedule that we've been given. Personally, I have also enjoyed taking part in our activations which include stretching and foam rolling. So we have been having one hour sessions in the morning over video call where all the players join in, and follow what our Scientific Advisor and Physio asks us to do. It has been a different experience to do it over video call for sure," he added.

Talking about the importance of following the protocols, Sunil said that SAI and Hockey India had ensured all safety measures were in place and he is now looking forward to resumption of sports activities. "It was so good to see how we got our food served, which was through contact-less delivery at our doorstep. All of us felt really safe, and I am really happy that we can resume sports activities from Wednesday onwards. It is good for us that we have been able to maintain our fitness through indoor body-weight exercises, but it will be good to start outdoor running as well in a very safe environment," signed off Sunil.
