Moderate disturbance expected to bring light to moderate snowfall from 26th to 28th January in J&K and Ladakh: Sonam Lotus

Sonam Lotus,a distinguished meteorologist and former Director of the Meteorological Center in Srinagar, currently leads the Meteorological Center in Leh has issued a weather advisory, indicating the likelihood of a moderate Western Disturbance bringing light to moderate snowfall across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh from January 26th to 28th.

Lotus, however, cautioned that the forecast is subject to change, adding an element of uncertainty to the upcoming weather conditions.

The dry weather currently gripping the region has heightened concerns among residents, particularly those dependent on agriculture.

Many believe that snowfall and rain are crucial for agricultural activities and replenishing water resources.

The prolonged dry spell has led to a visible impact on streams and water sources, exacerbating worries about water scarcity.

Forecast is subject to change”, Sonam wrote on X.

In the midst of this, the winter chill has tightened its grip on Kashmir, with Srinagar recording a bone-chilling temperature of minus 4.6°C. The drop in minimum temperature adds to the challenges faced by locals, especially with the anticipation of dry weather persisting.

Addressing the current weather conditions, a meteorological official stated, “Generally cloudy weather with light rain and snow over isolated middle & higher reaches is expected during January 16th & 20th night.”

However, there is no significant weather activity anticipated until January 24th, with the possibility of light rain and snow at scattered places from January 25th to 27th, according to various models.

Property of drug peddler attached in Kulgam

Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district on Tuesday attached an immovable property belonging to an alleged drug peddler, officials said.

This is the second such action in as many days.

Barkatullah Mir's under-construction house in Buchroo area of Kulgam was attached
under the NDPS Act, they said.

The official said the owner cannot sell/lease or transfer the property.

On Monday, police attached a property measuring 625 square feet belonging to alleged drug peddler Mashooq Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Khudwani Qaimoh, Kulgam.

The properties have been identified as illegally acquired using money from trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

Snowfall must for power projects to run, tourism sector to thrive: LG Manoj Sinha

Says once process of reservation for OBCs is completed, polls for ULBs, Panchayats to be held right way; urges people of Bla to participate in Jhanda Ooncha Rahay Hamara prog on Jan 26, districts prospering with active participation of youth

Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Tuesday hoped for snowfall in Kashmir stating that the snow is a must for power projects to run and the tourism sector to thrive.

Addressing a function in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, the LG as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that dry winter prevails in Kashmir at present. “I pray to God for snow as snowfall is must for power projects to run, otherwise they will become defunct. Snowfall is also a must to keep the tourism sector thriving,” he said.

The LG said last year 13 lakh tourists visited Gulmarg and the snow has been a major attraction there. “Six new destinations have been added to the list in Baramulla district but in absence of snow, tourists would prefer to stay away,” he said.

LG said elections for Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and Panchayats will be started soon after reservations to OBCs are completed. “Work is going on towards that direction and once the process is over, elections for ULBs and Panchayats will be held,” he said.

The LG urged the people of Baramulla to take part in large numbers in the Jhanda Ooncha Rahay Hamara program on January 26, the Republic Day. “I want the skies of Baramulla to be filled with Tiranga,” he said.

He said that Baramulla district is flourishing and prospering on all fronts with active participation of youth

Situation in Kashmir good, but some distance needs to be covered: GoC 15 Corps

Baramulla, The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 15 Corps Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai on Tuesday said that the current situation in Kashmir is good, but there is still a distance to be covered to move forward.

The GoC while speaking with reporters, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the youth have a bright future ahead as Kashmir is progressing and better days are on the horizon.

He also said that Army is completely involved with the administration and police to combat narco-terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.

The GoC was in Baramulla to attend the inaugural ceremony of stadium named after India's first Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat

"It's a proud moment for us that the stadium has been named after General Bipin Rawat. Efforts will be made to provide better facilities to the youth here," he said

School Bus Meets With Accident in Samba, 7 Students, 2 Teachers Injured

Srinagar, At least seven students and two teachers were injured after a school bus they were traveling in met with an accident in Samba district on Tuesday afternoon.

An official told news agency Kashmir Scroll that a school bus bearing number JK12B 8650 of Bhagarva Public School Samba met with an accident at National Highway near DC Office Samba, resulting in injuries to seven students and two teachers.

"The injured have been taken to District Hospital Samba for immediate treatment", the official said.

The official identified the injured students as; Utkar Singh (16) years son of Shakit Singh resident of Mandi Kheri Samba, student of 11th Class; Rudrakash Karakoti (16) son of Ram Singh resident of Ward no 3 Chotha Bazar Samba, student of 12th Class; Rajveer Singh (15) son of Rajeev Singh resident of Kheri Mandi Samba, student of 9th Class; Riyahansa (15) daughter of Dev Raj resident of ward No. 06 Samba, student of 9th Class; Shivalika Sambyal (15) daughter of Anil Sambyal resident of Mandi Thalora Samba, student of 9th Class; Varinder Partap (16) son of Rajeshwar Singh resident of Mandi Sangwali Samba Student of 11th Class and Janvi Sharma (16) daughter of Nar Singh Dass Sharma resident of Village Taloor Samba, student of 10th class.

The two injured have been identified as Promila Sambyal (50) wife of Davinder Singh resident of Thalora Mandi Samba and Kamani (32) wife of Joginder Singh resident of Mandi Thalora Samba.
