*'What’s in a name?'*

Flights Of Fantasy
[ M Panging Pao ]

Most common names of North-east India are ‘uncommon’ to mainland India. Names like Shurhozelie Liezietsu, Chekrovolu Swuro, Sniawbahlang, Huidrom Taibangsatba Meitei, Mylliemnpdah, Tanpho Wangnaw, Phongwasun Ngamgadam, Chowang Yangchung, Khumun Tabronyu, Chesup Singlakring, etc, must appear alien to most outsiders.

As per Webster dictionary, ‘name’ is a word that constitutes the distinctive designation of a person or thing or a word or symbol used in logic to designate an entity. All persons are generally named after birth; thereafter a person is known by that name throughout their life and in their afterlife also. In fact, many societies have name-giving ceremonies. Some names are given by parents, some by grandparents, some by teachers, some by maternal uncles, etc. In certain tribal societies, names follow a pattern from father’s names. A few names are given based on famous personalities, events, and even incidents. Some actors/personalities adopt names to boost their careers. Some people pick up adopted names and surnames. Another common pattern is the placing of clan name or one’s father’s name before the person’s name.

Some persons pick up adopted names or surnames to follow famous personalities or to boost their careers. Did you know that Amitabh Bachchan is actually Inquilab Srivastava, Akshay Kumar is actually Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia, Mithun Chakraborty is Gauranga Chakraborty, Sridevi is actually Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan, and Jeetendra is Ravi Kapoor?

Similarly, the actual names of famous international personalities include Marilyn Monroe, whose birth name was Norma Jeane Mortenson, Lady Gaga’s birth name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, Vin Diesel is Mark Sinclair, Jackie Chan was born Chan Kong-Sang, and finally Ben Kingsley, who was born as Krishna Pandit Bhanji. Famous politician Rajesh Pilot was actually Rajeshwar Prasad Singh Bidhuri, an IAF squadron leader. Since he was an IAF pilot,he picked Pilot as a surname.

With 28 major tribes, 100 sub-tribes, 50 distinct languages and dialects, in Arunachal also names follow a pattern based on tribe and region. In certain areas clan name is placed before personal name. However, certain different syllables or pronunciations are prominent in Arunachal. Syllables, pronunciations like í, é, nga, etc, are commonly used. Names like Líbang, Míbang, Émul are common. These names are commonly pronounced differently in other regions.

Recently there has been a subtle change in the names of the native people. With the proliferation of other languages, religions and increased interaction among other societies, names are undergoing subtle transformations. Names like Vijay, Rajiv, Amar, Mahesh, David, Daniel, George, Gabriel, Lenin, John, Neelam, Indira, Aroti, Jamuna, etc, can be heard and seen. There are some names named after famous personalities, events, and places, like India, Bombay, Germany, Bharat, etc.

Change is the only constant in life. Following this theory, our names are also changing. Names are changing due the influences of language, religion and increased interactions with other cultures and customs. However, are names more important that the body or soul? Like Shakespeare famously quoted in Romeo & Juliet: What’s in a name?

Hindi: Arunachal's New Mother Tongue

Flights Of Fantasy
[ M Panging Pao ]

Almost all states of India comprise majorly of people who speak one common language. Bengal has Bengali, Maharashtra has Marathi, Gujarat has Gujarati, Assam has Assamese, Mizoram has Mizo, Manipur has Manipuri, Meghalaya has Khasi and Jaintia, etc. Of all the states of Northeast India, Arunachal is the only state without a distinct language followed throughout the state. In states like Nagaland, Mizoram and Meghalaya, English is spoken commonly.

Arunachal Pradesh has 28 major tribes, and 50 distinct languages and dialects. Unlike other six states of the Northeast, Hindi is the most commonly used language in Arunachal. Hindi movies and serials are commonly watched at homes and Hindi songs are very popular amongst all tribes. In fact, TV shows like ‘Arunachal Idol’, ‘Voice of Arunachal’, etc, are dominated by Hindi songs. Hindi is the language of choice for proceedings in the legislative assembly. Hindi is also the main language used for campaigning by all politicians.

This preponderance of Hindi as the language of choice is gradually leading to Hindi replacing native languages as the common language. Today most children prefer Hindi over native languages. In most schools, colleges, institutions and bazaars of Arunachal, Hindi is commonly spoken. Teachers teach in Hindi, doctors converse with patients in Hindi, commuters speak to autos/taxi drivers in Hindi, politicians give speeches in Hindi…! The increase in spoken Hindi has also led to names of persons changing over to Hindi names in preference to tribal names.

However, the Hindi spoken in Arunachal is much different from the Hindi spoken in mainland Hindi states like UP, Bihar, Delhi, MP, etc, in both grammar and pronunciation. Grammatically correct Hindi is rarely spoken and followed in Arunachal. In fact Hindi is spoken with a local accent and with many errors. Hindi scholars may not suppor

Who will become MLA/MP?

Flights Of Fantasy
[ M Panging Pao ]

The election results are only few days away. The simultaneous elections for the Assembly and the Lok Sabha were held in Arunachal Pradesh on 19 April,2024. The elections for the Lok Sabha across the nation are still ongoing with the last phase planned on 1 June.

For Arunachal, with 10 MLA candidates elected unopposed, 14 candidates for two Lok Sabha seats and 133 candidates for the remaining 50 MLA constituencies are tensely waiting for the results. The results of the Assembly elections in Arunachal would be taken up on 2 June, after a tense wait of 42 days.

With counting planned to start early in the morning at 6 am on 2 June, majority trends and results would be available by midday, and it would be clear about which party would be forming the government in Arunachal. With most results indicated by midday, candidates would be either rejoicing or gloomy.

However, it was revealed that humongous amounts of money were used in these elections. As per reports, most candidates spent tens to hundreds of crores of rupees during the elections for campaigning and to managing greedy voters. Many voters, including youths, voted for money power instead of voting for development, ideology, peace, etc. The festival of democracy transformed into a festival of money. It was seen that the bazaars of towns were filled with buyers from villages spending their easily earned ‘election money’. Markets are full of people buying smartphones, laptops, trunks, almirahs, refrigerators, generators, vehicles, etc. There was a feeling of déjà vu that pilfered public money has gone back to the actual public.

On 2 June, the fates of the candidates contesting the 50 MLA seats will be revealed. Election officers, candidates, and election agents would be monitoring the counting of votes with eagle eyes. By midday or afternoon there would be clarity about most winning candidates. The winning candidate, their family members, friends and supporters would rejoice with cheering, sloganeering and parties. For the winning candidates, the rejoicing and partying would continue for days, months and years.

The losing candidates would be saddened and gloomy. They would have lost not only the elections, but also lot of money, property and pride. Many of the losing candidates would go back to empty houses without too many supporters.

Post elections, aspiring leaders would gather their supporter MLAs and jostle for key posts in the new government, including that of the chief minister, ministers, the speaker, and key advisory posts. Campaigning and lobbying would continue into the process of government formation. There would be winners and losers even in this process of government formation.

Whatever may be the result, the winning candidates deserve congratulations for campaigning hard and risking huge amounts of money, property and time to win the elections. With a difficult to please and greedy public, the winning candidates know that even after winning, their lives are not going to be easy. Life as an MLA or minister is equally tough. Best wishes to all the aspiring candidates.
