Sikkim to introduce temporary work permit system at Gram Panchayat Level

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has announced plans to introduce a temporary work permit system at every Gram Panchayat Unit (GPU). The initiative aims to regulate the employment of external workers while safeguarding local interests. It will help manage workforce deployment, ensure fair employment practices, and control the influx of workers from outside the state.

The decision was made during the 4th edition of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) legislators’ meeting held at Samman Bhawan in Gangtok.

A key concern discussed was the unauthorised entry of individuals into villages and towns. To tackle this, the government will enforce stricter workforce monitoring, including the new work permit system. Another issue raised was the illegal subletting of trade licenses. The leadership pledged to curb this practice and prioritise employment for local residents. The government aims to boost skill development and create more job opportunities for Sikkimese citizens.

Cleanliness and hygiene across the state were also highlighted. Departments were directed to prioritise maintaining cleanliness in public spaces and government offices as part of the state’s broader development agenda.

Furthermore, the establishment of a State Planning and Development Board was discussed. This board will oversee financial planning and monitor developmental projects at the state level. Additionally, constituency-level boards will be set up to focus on localised development needs.

The meeting concluded with a commitment from all members to work for the people of Sikkim. The leadership pledged to ensure that government initiatives reach every corner of the state, driving progress in line with public aspirations.

Ed Sheeran's 'Rs 30-crore' storm: Singer to perform in Sikkim’s golden jubilee year of statehood

British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, a global star, has strummed a storm not of his making in the Himalayan state of Sikkim.

Sikkim has been divided over Ed Sheeran ever since chief minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) said they were looking at the possibility of bringing Ed Sheeran to perform during Sikkim’s golden jubilee year of statehood.

Sikkim had merged with India on May 16, 1975.

The golden jubilee celebration will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The controversy over Ed Sheeran centres on the reported fee of more than ₹30 crore for the global artist’s concert.

Opposition parties and critics in social media were quick to point out that the government would do better to invest the amount in a welfare scheme.

Such was the criticism that Golay had to come up with a clarification. Even Golay’s wife Krishna Kumari Rai publicly defended Ed Sheeran’s possible concert in Sikkim.

“I had only said that we are exploring the possibility of getting Ed Sheeran. However, I had not said that the government would spend money from its coffers to bring him to Sikkim,” said Golay.

The Sikkim chief minister clarified that a group of well-wishers had expressed their desire to bring the singer during the golden jubilee celebration.

“The group approached the state government for logistic support, for security. The group will bring (Ed Sheeran) through sponsorship…,” said Golay.

The chief minister stressed Ed Sheeran’s presence would highlight Sikkim as a tourist destination across the globe.

“Tickets for Ed Sheeran’s concert get sold within minutes. We will have people travelling from across India and also abroad to attend his concert,” said Golay.

Ed Sheeran is travelling to India from January-end as part of his tour and is slated to perform in Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Shillong and Delhi.

Tickets are priced between ₹3,500 and ₹28,000 for these concerts.

The Citizen Action Party (CAP) Sikkim, however, seems unconvinced with Golay’s clarification.

Snowfall in Sikkim's upper reaches Sandapakhhu: Rain in Siliguri

The upper reaches of Sikkim and Bengal's highest point Sandapakhhu have been receiving snowfall since Sunday evening, leading to a lot of excitement among tourists visiting the region.

Darjeeling and its surrounding areas were blanketed in a white sheet due to hailstorm and rain on Monday.

In the evening, Siliguri and its surrounding areas received rain, bringing down the mercury and increasing the feeling of cold.

Rohan Pradhan, a resident of Sukhiapokhri in Darjeeling district, from where tourists and trekkers visit Sandakphu, said it was bitterly cold in Sukhiapokhri and Manebhanjan due to rain in the afternoon.

"Besides, there was snowfall in the upper reaches like Tonglu, Tumling and Sandakphu," Pradhan said. Dawa Gyalpo Sherpa, regional director of adventure tourism of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), also said that there was snowfall in Sandakphu on Monday. "Besides, hailstorm and rain at several places in Darjeeling district, including the district headquarters, led to a drop in temperature," Sherpa said. The administration in Sikkim has restricted the movement of tourists to certain places so that they do not get stranded at those places due to snow accumulation. Earlier, tourists were allowed to travel up to the 15th mile on the Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, which connects Nathu-la, Chhangu (Tsombo) lake and Zuluk on the RN Road. "Similarly, in the north, permits were issued only for Lachung and Lachen, not for other destinations," a source said. Lachen and Lachung, which were opened for tourists in December last year after a gap of over a year, are receiving regular snowfall. Hundreds of tourists are visiting these places every day. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officials in Sikkim said they have issued an alert for snowfall at some places in the Himalayan state.

One of them said, "Along with snowfall, thunderstorms, lightning and hailstorm are forecast in parts of Gangtok, Gyalshing, Mangan, Namchi, Pakyong and Soreng districts."

In a public advisory issued on HMPV, the health department said

Chief Secretary R Telang held a meeting with health officials on Thursday to assess the current threat and review Sikkim's preparedness with regard to human metapneumovirus (HMPV).The meeting was held in the wake of recent reports about a rise in cases of severe acute respiratory illness caused by HMPV in China. An official press release informed that HMPV causes predominantly mild respiratory diseases, although severe cases may also occur in vulnerable groups such as immunocompromised individuals. It was first identified in the Netherlands in 2001 and has since been reported in almost all parts of the world.“The Department of Health and Family Welfare is constantly monitoring the situation and robust surveillance systems are in place. There is no cause for concern, as available data suggests that the virus is not causing any unusual trend or serious outbreak in India.

The health department in its advisory to the public said that the public is advised to follow preventive measures and consult the nearest health professionals if they experience any such symptoms. HMPV is spread through coughing, sneezing or shaking hands with infected individuals and through close contact with contaminated surfaces. Its common symptoms include cough, runny nose, fever, sore throat and shortness of breath. Preventive measures include frequent hand washing, regular cleaning of contaminated surfaces and avoiding close contact with individuals showing symptoms of respiratory illness.

Heavy Snowfall In Sandakphu And Sikkim; Roads To Nathu La, Tsomgo Lake Closed For Tourists

Winter’s magic has transformed Sandakphu and Sikkim into snowy wonderlands, much to the delight of visitors and locals alike. Sandakphu, Bengal’s highest peak at 11,930 feet, experienced its second snowfall of the season, covering stretches of the Singalila National Park and nearby spots like Phalut and Thakum in a pristine white blanket. Known for its iconic trekking routes and vintage Land Rover rides, the area saw fewer tourists than last month but expects a surge as the snowfall draws adventurers back.

Sikkim’s high-altitude locations, including Nathu La (14,000 feet) and Chhangu Lake (12,310 feet), also received heavy snowfall, turning them into snow-covered landscapes. However, safety took precedence as the state tourism department restricted movement to certain areas. Visitors are now allowed only up to designated points like the 10th Mile near Gangtok and Lachung in North Sikkim, while popular destinations such as Gurudongmar Lake and Zero Point are off-limits until weather conditions improve.

According to reports, fresh snowfall has led to an increase in the number of tourists who have come to stay in places like Lachung and Lachen, embracing the chill and heeding safety advisories to avoid venturing into remote, icy terrains. Meanwhile, meteorologists predict more snowfall as a western disturbance remains active, adding a touch of caution to the frosty excitement. Even the plains of sub-Himalayan Bengal felt the chill, with rain and foggy conditions reminding travellers to stay alert on the roads.
