As representatives of copyrights, we are as accommodating of users as possible. They have low budgets and urgent deadlines that we jump through hoops to try and help them meet.
Once the music is used, they stop responding to calls and emails to get the paperwork signed and make the payment. Suddenly their corporate process becomes important and we are told off when we ask them to hurry things up.
Obviously they have no idea that usage of music without the appropriate license is a criminal offence but the fact also is that we can’t be looking to get arrest warrants against Managing Directors of large corporations who perhaps have no clue about the unprofessional behaviour of their employees.
That’s been one of my reasons for pressing for the reinstatement of the Copyright Board so we can address issues like this quickly. One fears that cases in commercial high courts will be adjudicated only after years, encouraging violators to keep doing this.
Any other course of redressal in these situations?

A tech industry professional, Rohit Saini known by his stage name Rohit2dot0 is also a lyricist, performer, singer and composer with various independent releases to his credit. Though he started writing lyrics as a fun thing, he teamed up with composer-singer Anirudh Bhola to compose and sing ‘O Behna’, a song about a brother-sister relationship. Neither expected the song to explode and become a viral hit. Rohit has been selective in the songs that he is putting out, with his focus being on Hindi and Punjabi collaborations.
