Despite the ten thousand theatres in the country, the big screen experiences – a shared cultural staple – can feel out of reach for many. This was the sentiment that brought to the forefront at a recent discussion, saying, “For a vast number of Indian districts, there is no local cinema to go to.” Reflecting on what’s gone wrong, the actor emphasised how the immediacy of an OTT release after a theatrical release often leaves the audience with an easy way out – why go to the theatre when the film will be streaming soon? The discussion was at a session titled ‘Studios of the Future: Putting India on World Studio Map,’ at the Wave Summit.
In a country of over 1.4 billion, India has just 9,000 to 10,000 movie screens. Aamir explained, “In the 10,000 that we have, half are in the south and others in the rest of the country. So for a Hindi film, there are only 5,000 screens available. The biggest hits over the years have had a footfall of merely three and a half crore people – that’s just 2% of our population. So, where is the remaining 98% watching our films?” The answer is – they aren’t. Not in theaters, at least. “Because for a vast number of Indian districts, there is no local cinema to go to,” Aamir added.
