The long sound of vowelsVowels at the end of a syllable makes a long vowel sound, for example, me and the hero. Vowel teams form long vowels, for example, “ai” in paid, “ee” in feet, “ie” in pie, and “oa” in boat. A silent /e/ makes the previous vowel in the word long.

Why are they called long vowels?
A long vowel sounds like you are saying the letter itself. Short vowel sounds occur when the letter is not pronounced the way it sounds. Long vowel sounds are created by placing two vowels together or ending the word with an 'E.'
