Honoring Sikh Valor: 78th Infantry Day Marks India’s First Stand for Kashmir in 1947

On October 27, 1947, history was made as two companies from the 1st Battalion of The Sikh Regiment, led by the resolute Lt Col Dewan Ranjit Rai, were airlifted from Delhi to Srinagar in Dakotas, at the request of Maharaja Hari Singh. The Maharaja, facing an existential threat from Pakistan-supported tribal militias advancing into Kashmir, signed the Instrument of Accession on October 26, 1947, aligning Jammu and Kashmir with India. This marked a historic moment—India’s first military engagement as a sovereign nation, one that would forever commemorate October 27 as Infantry Day.

Lt Col Rai’s task was monumental, embodying the Sikh spirit of resilience and valor. Arriving in Srinagar, he immediately led his troops to Mile 32, east of Baramulla, and took defensive positions across hill features along the road. In a moment that would echo the centuries-old martial traditions of the Khalsa, Rai took a stand against overwhelming forces. By October 28, he was tragically martyred in a rear-guard action, having bought crucial time for reinforcements to secure Srinagar and protect the region. For his fearless actions, Lt Col Rai was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra (MVC), one of India’s highest military honors.

With Col Rai’s passing, Major Harwant Singh MC stepped up to command the battalion. As the senior-most officer available, he faced the intense trials of battle, embodying the ethos of the Sikh warrior: to hold the line, defend the vulnerable, and never waver in the face of aggression. The battalion fought with unyielding courage for over a year, resulting in heavy casualties—2 officers, 6 JCOs, and 101 ORs lost, with numerous others wounded and missing.

Infantry Day is a day of remembrance and reverence, honoring the indomitable spirit of those soldiers who upheld the principles of duty, honor, and sacrifice in defense of Kashmir. For Sikhs, their actions echo the immortal words of Guru Gobind Singh Ji: “Na daro, har so jab jaaye laro nischay kar apni jeet karon” – Fear none, confront every challenge with unwavering faith, and commit fully to victory in righteous battles.

As we remember the valor of our soldiers on this 78th Infantry Day, we draw inspiration from their sacrifice and reaffirm our commitment to uphold the ideals for which they fought.

Feeling strong to the finish because we ate our spinach! 🌊💪 A fun-filled day at Popeye Village Malta with the fam, celebrating the iconic cartoon that’s been a part of childhoods for generations. Did you know this charming seaside town was originally built as a film set for the 1980 Popeye musical starring Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl? 🎬 Now it’s a must-see destination, bringing back the nostalgia with every turn. Huge thanks to Vista Malta for hosting us on this unforgettable family adventure!

🚩 Thai Sikhs Raise the New Basanti Nishan Sahib at Everest Base Camp for the First Time! 🚩

History has been made! A group of Thai Sikhs has proudly raised the new Basanti Nishan Sahib at Everest Base Camp—for the first time ever. This milestone represents more than just a physical challenge—it’s a spiritual journey guided by Sikh values. The Basanti (mustard yellow) color, recently reintroduced by the Akal Takht, flew high at one of the most iconic locations in the world. 🙌🏼

The group, which ranged in age from 15 to 68, showcased incredible resilience and faith, embodying the Sikh principle of Miri-Piri. They embarked on this journey not to conquer but to honor nature and Guru Sahib’s guiding presence.

The team included:

• Phornthep Thakral
• Rajinder Singh Thakral
• Karanvir Singh Thakral
• Narin Grover
• Daljit Singh Thakral
• Krit Grover

🌄 Journey Preparation & Challenges
The preparation was more mental than physical—one of the team members emphasized the power of will over body, saying, “If the mind is willing, the body adapts.” The inspiration behind the trek came from Daljit Singh, who wanted to achieve this feat before turning 70. The group faced typical high-altitude challenges such as dizziness and headaches, but light-heartedness and good company kept them motivated throughout.

🚁 Weather & Significance of Carrying the Nishan Sahib
The unpredictable Himalayan weather, especially during the helicopter ride, was one of the major challenges. Yet, carrying the Basanti Nishan Sahib gave them strength. This historic moment wasn’t just about raising a flag—it was a spiritual act of gratitude, with the group feeling Guru Sahib’s presence safeguarding their journey.

🔥 Memorable Moments
After long days of trekking, the team enjoyed simple pleasures like chatting by the fireplace, disconnected from the world, and reconnecting with each other and their faith. One team member beautifully reflected on the humbling experience of standing at Everest Base Camp, comparing it to Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Udasis and realizing how small their journey felt in comparison.

🙏 A Message for All
The group’s journey carries a powerful message: “So satgur pyara mere naal hai, jithey kithey meinu lay chadai” (The true Guru is always with me, wherever He takes me). Their trek was a testament to trusting Guru’s guidance and embracing each step with humility.

This achievement is a landmark moment for Sikhs around the world, raising awareness about the significance of the Basanti Nishan Sahib and encouraging the global Sikh community to come forward and honor their traditions through such acts.

💫 Future Plans
The team looks forward to embarking on more adventures, continuing to raise awareness for Sikh causes and promoting unity through faith.
