‘Pickaxe threat’ ahead of Euro 2024 game in Germany… Police shoot down

The British BBC reported that police in Hamburg, Germany, ahead of the 2026 European Football Championship (Euro 2024) game, shot and subdued a man who was threatening him with a blunt weapon.

Local police explained that around 12:30 noon on the 16th (local time), a man threatened a police officer with a pickaxe and a Molotov cocktail near the Reeperbahn, Hamburg's busiest street, and fired back.

The man was shot in the leg and is currently being treated at a hospital, police said, adding that the motive and circumstances of the crime are being investigated.

According to German media, the incident occurred near the fan zone for supporters of the Dutch soccer team before the Group D match between the Netherlands and Poland.

Local police explained, "According to what is currently known, this man's crime was not related to soccer."

This year's Euro 2024 will be held across Germany until the 14th of next month.
