Recording Acoustic Guitar with Chayan Chakraborty at Niyogi’s Place Recording Studio
We recently had the pleasure of hosting the incredibly talented guitarist Chayan Chakraborty at Niyogi’s Place Recording Studio. Chayan’s virtuosity on the acoustic guitar brought a unique energy to the space, and we were excited to capture the richness of his performance using some of the best gear available.
For this session, we chose to mic the guitar with a Neumann KM184 matched pair—a choice that provided incredible clarity and a natural representation of Chayan’s dynamic playing.
Why the Neumann KM184 Matched Pair?
The Neumann KM184 is a small diaphragm condenser microphone known for its accurate frequency response and transparency. Its tight cardioid pattern and smooth high-end make it an ideal tool for recording acoustic guitar. When using a matched pair, the stereo imaging becomes incredibly precise, allowing us to capture both the warmth of the guitar body and the crispness of the strings.
Technical Setup:
- Positioning: We placed the matched pair in a spaced pair configuration, about 8–10 inches from the guitar, angled toward the 12th fret and bridge. This balanced placement provided a rich stereo field without any excessive room or phase issues.
- Result: The result was a detailed and natural stereo image, with the high frequencies sparkling clearly without any harshness. The low-mid frequencies had a nice depth, capturing the full body of the instrument while keeping the overall tone tight and focused. The room acoustics, though subtly present, blended beautifully with the direct sound of the guitar.
Chayan’s performance, paired with the precision of the Neumann KM184, gave us an acoustic guitar recording that is both intimate and sonically expansive—perfect for both critical listening and musical production. We’re thrilled with how it turned out and can’t wait to share more from this session!
Stay tuned for more updates from Niyogi’s Place Recording Studio as we continue to capture some incredible sounds.
